View Full Version : Live music venues in Sheffield
Hi,
Not been living in Sheffield for over 5 years now, but would like to bring my band her for a mini tour maybe around Yorkshire and Lancashire.
How many live music venues are they in Sheffield, can someone list them?
Thanks
I will do a list and post it as a sticky thread soon, but for now..
Casbah, West Street Live, The Grapes, The Harley, The Plug, The Boardwalk, The Academy 2, Leadmill, The Corporation, The Cremone, The Washington, The Frog & Parrot, The Howard, The Red House, Under The Boardwalk (Currently Closed last I looked), Dove & Rainbow, The Moorfoot Tavern.
Whats your band and style of music? if its heavy I can sort a gig swap for you.
Under the Boardwalk is dead and buried, has been for six months
The Cremorne I believe shut down two weeks ago, they lost their live music license anyway after someone supposedly complained. I used to live above this place and never heard anything so god knows who complained...
Frog and Parrot was being refurbed last I saw and may not currently be open
Dove and Rainbow was only doing acoustic stuff on Sundays last I heard from the promoter there. Not sure if that has changed.
I'm going to add the University Arms to your list. Got a gig there in a couple of weeks which may be good. The Pomona possibly does gigs, they still have adverts up and so you could always ask them. Octagon at Sheff Uni (I have the promoters email, as I do for the Leadmill as well PM me if you want those).
And gig swapping is only good if your band brings people to the gig ;)
mikebarton 19-09-2008, 21:58 how about the cricketers arms on bramall lane? is that still even open?
i put some gigs on there myself, to quite a sucsess
Erm....I don't think so, never heard of anyone playing there anyway
Also forgot The Broadfield. Its a bit out of town but Bruce Dickinson form Iron Maiden played his first ever gig there, lol
mikebarton 19-09-2008, 22:06 the music venues sure have closed up havent they. i was only away from sheffield for a year and a half, and the dnr turned to under the boardwalk, which is now gone! the new dnr only puts on acoustic nights. man whats going on!
would be good to try and start up a live music venue, but theres too much money and adminstration involved, not to mention the time.
someone needs to buy niche...remove the drugs, thats an ideal place for live music, away from town, but close enough to get passers by.
mikebarton 19-09-2008, 22:07 the crickters arms worked on you can use the room upstairs for free aslong as everyone who comes buys a drink or two from the bar.
i put red stars parade, bring out your dead, another dead hero, thy horror grows near steel reasoning on there.
Cricketers does still have some gigs put on, i dont like the place personally...i've put a couple of gigs on there myself.
Dove and rainbow does put non-acoustic acts on and is a seperate entity from who owned DnR ...which since moved to arundel gate where Bar101 used to be then got shut down for fire safety hazards or something along them lines.
I've also put gigs on at The Bedroom on west street but he hasent really got any equipment now so its more hassle than its worth.
oh and The Nelson sometimes have gigs on, although its tiny it always seems to be packed.
mikebarton 21-09-2008, 11:14 Mtheo,
How long ago was it you put gigs on in the bedroom? have you still got any old gig listings? we both put on Thy Horror Grows Near, a rotherham which are no longer together..(slight smile), they played at the bedroom with an atreyu type band who i think were from leeds. The guitarist wore silly hats and did lots of synchro guitar swings.
Ring any bells?
cheers
mike
Classic Rock 21-09-2008, 18:25 The Moorfoot Tavern host live bands every Saturday night and have done for the last 3 years. For gigs, PM me.
mikebarton 21-09-2008, 19:55 Sorry for not PM'ing classif rock, but my internet browser is doing the dirty on me.
Having never been to the moorfoot tavern, have you got any info on it? set up? backline etc?
And what type of bands are normally put on?
Thanks :)
Classic Rock 21-09-2008, 23:30 Bands bring their own backline, a vocal PA for up to 3 mics is provided, DJ plays when the band isn't on (that's usually me) and helps with sound levels.
It's usually rock bands who play, but anything goes as long as the band can drum up an audience to come and watch them!

The Shakespeare, City/Memorial Hall, The Forum, The Springvale Tavern, Bar Abbey, Foundry / Fusion / Raynor Lounge (Sheff uni). Some of which have suitable in-house PA systems. There's a list at http://sheffieldgigguide.pbwiki.com which could be helpful (and anyone can update it)
word of warning to some...check beforehand....a lot are ill equiped or only cater for acoustic acts.
also Green Room on Division Street have acoustic performers...used to be wednesdays but I haven't been in for a while.

You've missed both the student unions out from that list - both are available for private hires to hold public gigs from 50-1200 capacities, with full production kit & in house technical teams.

Any idea of the cost?
