About 20 years ago, I signed up for the then-new "Business Enterprise Programme", which helped you set up in business and also gave you £40 a week (?) for the first 6 months to help get your enterprise off the ground.
(Probably mainly a fiddle to get the dole queue figures down, but that's another matter!)
You had to complete a one day seminar at one of their locations beforehand - mine happened to be at a (temporary) site on Broomfield Road, just off Glossop Road at the Rutland Hotel junction - and you were also offered a weekly course where experts in different fields - advertising, accountancy etc. - would come for a few hours and give you the benefit of their experience and advice on your proposed venture.
On my particular course - forgive me, I can't recall any names - there were people who wanted to set up a heat exchanger business, a fishing magazine publisher, a nurseryman and even a "professional rock climber", although I never actually figured that one!
Just wondered how any of you did? Got off the ground? Still going?!
(I just remembered the heat exchanger bloke originally had premises on/near Effingham Road....)
The training agency themselves obviously did fairly well too, as they eventually moved to large premises at the foot of East Bank Road....
