View Full Version : Do you think Brian Laws excuse was ridiculous?
Having read Brian Laws comment on why they lost 6-0 last night, he blamed it on the traveling. He said it took them from 8am in the morning till 3pm in the afternoon because of traffic problems...... I nearly fell off my chair with laughter :hihi:
Who else thinks this was very funny??
Bloomdido 17-09-2008, 13:59 A perfectly valid reason. They should have gone down the day before or at least had some practice nets on the coach.
they probebly couldnt afford the hotel bill :( they did have another 5 hour to prepare. Also they should have just been professional on "just got on with it"
Are footballer that weak?
if they were travelling on national express with no legroom or drinks or anything i would agree- but the fact they were travelling on a luxury coach just makes his comments look ridiculous.

He's going to have some fun explaining why; if God forbid we lose at the Lane.

proberbly use the same excuse as charisma turner.
" some of our players froze they've never played in an atmosphere like that before" :hihi:

Yes, posting on here is generally all just a bit of fun; even if a recent post BY ME in dialogue with you on another thread may have suggested otherwise.
messageboards and email have no tone, and sometime attempts of humour (or even sarcasm ) can fall flat.
And just sometimes, when someone is clearly upset ( as you were after the Caridff game), I refrained from adding any fuel to the fire, however great the temptation was.

Banter is banter, if you can't take it then don't dish it out.
I have to agree with those who have said that Brian Laws' excuse for the Reading defeat was pathetic.
Stuck in a traffic jam for 7 hours- what do other teams do that are travelling long distance to Reading?!?! Get them in a travel lodge.
Laws, you got it wrong- admit it. We're still behind you but don't treat us like idiots.

An even better night for the fans then.
Stuck 7 hours in traffic behind the team on the road, and then have to watch a 6-0 defeat.
Might there have been a Boothroyd - Warnock conspiracy to create some traffic chaos en route to Reading? Wouldn't put it past them. :)

NERVY-OWL 17-09-2008, 19:05 to be fair on brian, it wont of helped 1 bit being stuck on a coach all that time but he could of at least said they played shocking
I actually think brain laws is a great manager and was envious when the wendys got him, but it was out of order to say such a thing... what about all the travelling fans what have work the next morning think of them poor souls :D
They should have brought along some tents and sleeping bags, maybe they would have played abit better :hihi:
peterbld4 17-09-2008, 20:15 i am sorry but what brain law said was a joke in itself a poor game from the players
and he blames the coach ride lol
the blades are not upto standards yet need midfield players
will get there
up the blades 4 eva

agree totally its bad enough losing 6-o an getting stick of the blunts, but then too come out with that statement just makes him look an idiot. i like laws but that was just a feeble excuse. what worries me is he just passed it by an not given the players a good going rollicking of which they deserved.:rant::rant:

3 days before when they beat the mighty Watford they were given demi God status :huh::huh::huh:
Thingything 17-09-2008, 20:56 Yes its a bloody long way to reading and i dont think i would make the trip again, but i wouldnt use that as an excuse for the way we played last night
I don't know, when being interviewed by Radio Sheffield, Laws' voice sounded quite hoarse- as if he'd been doing a bit of shouting.
Laws is the manager famous for the 'chicken wings' incident, trust me- he'll have let the players have it.

That's not strictly true, by some fans maybe but I think the many level headed SWFC fans weren't getting carried away.

I have been to Brighton and Portsmouth and its further than Reading.
Its a terrible excuse he used but what i find hard to believe is a team travelling down on the day...Are wendy that skint ?
The above comment isn't having a go either its a serious question.
Even when we ( my mens pub team ) go away to tournaments we go the night before :D

Agreed, I've been asking that question myself.
NERVY-OWL 17-09-2008, 21:09 i'm sure if they are that skint they could of stayed at a travelodge, not going to cost that much to put the squad up

Have been to portsmouth too, wettest day in history and had to watch the boys on a stand with no cover on it
Thank god Gary Megson gave us something to shout about
I always thought the team stopped the night if the game was some distance?? I still dont buy that comment, they still had 5 hour to prepare for the game.
Its not very professional to say you under preformed because of the traffic, can you imagen a surgeon/doctor not doing there job properly because they had to drive abit of a distance. It wouldnt be so bad if they worked 60-70 hours a week
to be honest, im not even a wendy fan and i find it an insult.
My heart bleeds for these guys who get paid £1000's of pounds a week
bladebloke 17-09-2008, 21:30 i'm sure if they are that skint they could of stayed at a travelodge, not going to cost that much to put the squad up
or they could have tied that big tent you train in to the back of the coach and slept in that.
OwlGuy08 17-09-2008, 21:39 As Laws said, the 7 hour trip was terrible! It can make the players very tired, so i think we know why ;) . We could have done a bit better but as i said the players must have been very tired and stuff, so they did well :)
SOLID BLADE 17-09-2008, 21:55 We lost 6-0 because I left my tv on at home.
SOLID BLADE 17-09-2008, 21:56 Well it must take them that long every week to get to your groung all the way down in the dumps.ha! ha!

Yeah thats the away stand...Was there the day the linesman got knocked out and we drew 1-1 with 10 men :gag:
Not a very nice place Portsmouth especially when the OB are mad at you for embarassing them because a Blade ran on the pitch so what do they do ? They turn you down a road that runs right into where the 657 are waiting for you :gag::gag::gag:

Any chance you just go by the name OWL on the BBC website.
BladeBloke will know what I am on about
:hihi::hihi::hihi:
Very poor excuse ,indeed.
They need a new coach driver...it was his fault.
On the brightside no one got injured getting on or off the coach or suffered from deep vein thrombosis etc.
F. Sidebottom 18-09-2008, 09:50 I think we can take some positives away from the game.
Like we don't have to play them away again this season. :hihi:
7 Hour coach ride though. That's a crap excuse. They had 5 hours to recover, and the club should have paid out for them to stay over anyway.
As I said after the first game, this team started with some confidence in the league this season, but it was easy to see that it wouldn't take much for that confidence to drain away - as it did in the Wolves game, and the Reading game.
And the injuries exposing our lack of strength in depth in the squad may be playing a part too.
Just hope we can bounce back with another home steady home performance.
8balltiger 18-09-2008, 11:42 Can I just make an appeal to my fellow Blade fans.

....and JJ was still dreaming of her , when he got one on one with their keeper (a couple of minutes after they had scored their first goal), and he planted the ball straight between her legs ..... oh sorry into Hahnemann's hands.

Hang on a bit. I'm a dyed in the wool Owl, cut me and the blood's blue etc, from 4 generations of Owls etc, but even I can't bring myself to say they did well. If they'd got there at 7.30 and had to get changed in the coach and had nothing to eat all day, then got 3 players injured and 2 sent off, I might say it: but we arrived 5 hours before kick off, got no injuries (that I know of) and finished with 11 players. Let's be honest, on the night, they were good and we were crap. It's happened, the players should learn from it and move on, we fans should take the flak and look for things to change on Saturday.

Very well said Pitty...
My mens team played the other night and lost for only the 3rd time this season, after the match having a beer and can hear one of our lads moaning about the state of the pitch etc, I turned around and told him, same pitch for them, Lets just face it on the night we weren't good enough. :gag:
NEKRO138 18-09-2008, 14:43 The journey would have contributed to a poor performance but I don't think it would made much of a difference.
Ok, so we were shocking at Reading but it doesn't really matter, we've still had a good start to the season.
On top of that, Doyle is one of the best, if not the best striker in the league. I was surprised when he didn't go anywhere in the window.
They need a new coach driver...it was his fault.

Could the driver have been a blade?? :hihi:

Yeah, you'd have thought that when they passed the sign saying Bristol 17 miles, it might have given the game away.

Brian laws wunt have a say in when they travelled, or where they stayed,
or how much an overnighter for 20 people would have been. I don't think for one minute that this was Laws' decision.
Probably a cost cutting measure by the powers that be.
Earwiggo 18-09-2008, 19:07 I travel thousands of miles a year on the motorways, and there's been loads of times I've been in a jam for hours on end. Even getting out of the car
and walking around on the motorway didn't help the muscle stiffness or the numb bum. It's terrible when you finally get to your destination 4 hours after you expected to be there. 7 hours is a heck of a long time to be in a confined space, A/C'd or not. How many of us could get off a plane say, after a 3 - 4 hour flight, and play an acceptable game of football? You're knackered just sitting doing nowt. 5 hours is not really sufficient time to recover properly from a trip like that. Travelling is a horrible business.
Laws didn't actually say we were rubbish, but you could tell by his statement that that is exactly what he meant to say. "We let in 2 early diabolical goals" ... and "The players' minds were still in that traffic jam" Yeah, we were rubbish, but if the RS commentary was owt to go on, a lot of teams will get hammered at Reading. We'll beat Ipswich.

What about times when we've travelled to Bristol, Plymouth, Cardiff?
Also long journeys but we never got thumped there, in fact we won at Plymouth.
I know these teams aren't as good as Reading, but still- blaming the travelling is NO excuse for a 6-0 loss.

Just catching up on posts (working away) so I apologise for being late but this is just an absolute classic :hihi::hihi:
I know that we have nothing much to brag about at the moment but to lose 6-0 and say "they did well" is just pathetic :loopy:

Not to mention, a small sign of insanity.

5 hours is lots of time to recover. What about the poor guy who drives the coach can you imagin him saying that if he made a mistake. Also what about teams who play in europe playing one night on a wednesday night getting back early hours of thursday morning then playing 3 days later.
I think the word PROFESSIONAL footballer comes to mind. You just get on with it and be professional. Lets not forget these guys work 4 hours a day, with a day off during the week and spend most of the time on the playstation.
Look at the soldiers in iraq or afganistan, what work in the intence heat and work 12 hours on 12 hours off, i would be interested in what those guys thought ..... pussies comes to mind!

Yep, and forget about the 7 points from 3 games and just one goal conceded in between the two matches.
A battering every 4 games followed by 2 wins and a draw in the next 3 will do for me. Should be enough for a playoff place - as long as we then get the 2 wins and a draw in the playoff games!
