bit of a long shot but somthing that has been bugging me for years is if you look at the shops on northern ave something seems missing?
they are set out in a kind of circle around the cross roads but if you look at each building they are very alike, all exept the building that is now a sanwich shop an the premier/londis shop?
the rest of the buildings if you take a look at the roofs all have "hips" to each side exept premier that has a gable end?
all the rest look like they were kind of designed as one large shop in the middle with a smaller shop to either side.
just wondered if anyone knew if they were built like that or if something happened later on.
i asked a old relative once, she remembers the shops been built and also before they were built, aparently there used to be a kind of shed general store, but she can not remember if they were like that from the start.

no, there was an "extra" bit attached to the Londis, originally, but by the 70's it had gone.

I'm not sure whether it was bombed, or burnt down, or what happened to it, but it was definitely gone in the 70's.

Is that where Fred's car spares was? That was burned down by the local kids (allegedly) in the mid 90s.

The place that is now a sandwich shop used to be a butchers in the early 70's (and probably well before then). No prizes for guessing how I know!

no, lindy, Londis was never a car spares. The sandwich shop next to Londis was the car spares shop, the first shop on the row with Londis was a butchers (left side as you face the row of shops)

Londis was "Salls" Stores (as was the supermarket round by pearl motors on East Bank Road) in the 1970's when I was a kid.

Getting away from the shops on this , but in the early fifties , 51-54 , if you went up Northern Avenue towards Craddock , there use to be a concrete building on the north west corner . We used to explore this place as kids . Inside there were railings that formed walk ways , as though to line up for something . Does anyone remember this building and what was it for ? This has bothered me for 52 years , just have to find out . Sorry to get away from the thread but ......

do you mean the building on the corner of eastern ave and erriington? the old carlton cinama? was later called beacon lamps and i think it made light bulbs?.
ive always know it to be empty until it was demolished and houses built there.

the old Carlton cinema was a light-bulb warehouse into the early/ mid eighties.

it stood derelict for some time, before thankfully being demolished and a flats development called "Carlton Mews" was built on the site about 12 yrs ago.

The Carlton's architecture was interesting, as it was built in an unusual way, using an innovative method of casting the concrete.

It was known colloquially as "the Icebox" because it was so cold (the concrete's insulating properties were poor)

No , I remember the Carlton . This was a small building and I'm sure it was on the north west corner of Northern and Craddock . It was grey concrete , the railings (stell pipe/tube ) inside and out were green/rusty . The whole building was not much bigger than the houses that surounded it . Someone must remember this .

The fire was started by some friends of mine in about 96/97 during Myrtle Springs school's lunch hour. I remember the police coming o question them. I spent most of the afternoon watching the fire from the top floor of the school and being late for science which the teachers weren't pleased about.

Hi Clocker, if it's the building that I'm thinking of it was built during WW2 and had showers inside in case of a gas attack. At least that is what I was told by my father. Don't know if there were others around as it would not have been much use on it's own. I think it was torn down long ago.

Little Tyke , that sounds like the building . I don't remember the showers , they were probably gone by the mid fifties . The building was derelict by then , but was a source of adventure for us kids . I'm glad to hear someone else remembers it .

Thanks

I spoke to a relative about this building which you mention and they seem to think it is behind the vulcan pub but is not sure of it's use (maybe a changing and shower block for the playing field? I once saw an old delapidated one in a park in Rotherham years ago)

I'm not sure it was showers for the playing field , there was no playing field back then , and no pub . I seem to remember just an overgrown , natural green space there ......it was a long time ago though . The building would have been on the North West corner if that helps any .

sounds like the old building on the fileds behind where the pub is (wasn't before then) I wonder when the pub was built? I recall it always being there but I can only remember back to 1972.

I'm talking early to mid fifties . The building , if I remember correctly , was flat roofed , had a ramp or low steps to the front entrance . I seem to recall the building being concrete , not brick , but could be very wrong on this . Would any photos exist of this building ??

Try looking on google earth, I have and that is where I saw the building at the back of the vulcan which is situated on Northern Avenue, more or less right opposite craddock. Just beware google seems to think Northern Avenue is Norton. (it also thinks this about other areas).

Seems to me the building used to sit about where the pub is now . I checked our Google Earth and saw nothing familiar

Thanks
