View Full Version : Problem with sky receiver
alchemist 09-05-2005, 14:14 ive a problem with a sky reciever, if i switch it off for any reason it does not come back with a signal without a few goes at switching it off and on, any suggestions as to whta is happening?
and connected to this
where is the best place to go for repairs or a new standard reciever (not a plus one) and what would i9 be expecting to pay for one?
dave
Ring up sky and tell them it is on the blink. From past experience they will try and charge you to come out and look at it (@£50) or charge you for a new box (@£200). Tell them that you cannot possibly afford either a new box, or the cost of the engineer and will therefore have to cut off and end your subscription. They should then either offer to come and look at it for free or send you a new box for free. This has happened in the past to a few of my friends. So in other words they will charge you if they can get away with it!!!
Or you could try a local repair outfit bit my first try would be Sky themselves.

I have this problem as well.
I tend to unplug it at the wall, leave it for a few minutes (literally), remove the Sky Viewing Card, turn things back on and then on request re-insert the card.
Usually OK after that.

I think I have one kicking around at home if you want it, I will check.
If you want it I could drop it off for you, no charge.
Maybe even throw in a spare LNB.
:)
This has been happening to me for about a month. It just goes off and says no signal received. I unplug it, pull the card out, disconnect the dish cable and swear a lot. After approx 6 attempts at this it then works. If you ring Sky they just tell you to unplug the box, leave it for 2 mins and then plug it back in. My box is going back to the shop this week for a check up.

Joe, in fact I might even have 2, if you want a spare perhaps.
No use to me anymore :)
Would have to check though if you are bothered.
My workmate's box went on the blink two weeks ago. He phoned Sky and explained. They told him they have a special offer on where they send an engineer round. If he can't fix it, he'll give you a refurbished box. This was going to cost £60. He told them it was too much and to cancel his subscription.
They then halved the cost straight away. The engineer came out, replaced the box without even looking at the old one and left ;)
Not bad for £30 IMO ;)
As everyone else says, complain to Sky and tell them you're cancelling your contract if they mention you paying for an engineer visit. This usually prompts them to drop the charge and send an engineer round to sort it out ASAP, or something similar.
Venger,
Thnks for the offer! That's very kind! However, having examined the bag of paperwork here we seem to have a maintenance contract..... :)
Time to hassle Sky, time to hassle Sky.... :D

Greenback 12-05-2005, 08:05 Exactly the same thing happens to the receiver at my parents' house, usually right before the football is about to start. :(
steevie/d 12-05-2005, 08:25 i had the same problem when we had sky installed there is a big tree out side our house and it was blocking the signal!!! now the dish is on the chinmy stack high up and not had any probs since so if any of you have got a large tree in line of sight of the sky signal sattelite this could couse the problems with it having a mind of its own best regards steve...
alchemist 12-05-2005, 08:38 to try and clarify things a bit
AFAIK its not a signal from the sat problem its a problem with the rf output suddenly deciding not to be there, it could be the rf box is going on the blink, it acts as though the system isnt at the designated channel anymore, it wont even show me the setup menu etc, anyway thanks to venger it should soon be resolved

Your parents box goes off at the same time as mine then, the stupid box also has a dislike for Soccer AM. It just waits untill I get comfy in bed with a bacon buttie to watch it, then it goes off. I then have to go to the living room to mess around with it for 15 mins before I return to my bed and my now cold bacon buttie.
