Thanks. bellis 09-05-2005, 13:50 i was in sorrento 97 its a really nice place the public transport system is exellent and quite cheap thomson holidays do good hotels for sorrento flight included only thing i didnt like was the 90 minute transfer from naples to sorrento very italian job if you know what i mean:) i was meant to be going to sorrento myself this year but i had to change the date and resort to ibiza as i didnt realise the play offs where on while i was there have a nice time:) rob123 09-05-2005, 13:51 Thanks Panda, that's helpful. wendy 09-05-2005, 21:11 Rob just one thing that Panda didn't say - they don't queue for buses in Italy so get on the bus don't wait for the locals they won't wait for you. It's a long time since I've been to Italy (over 20 years) but I always remember being told this. bellis 09-05-2005, 21:47 Originally posted by wendy Rob just one thing that Panda didn't say - they don't queue for buses in Italy so get on the bus don't wait for the locals they won't wait for you. Been there three times now and would gladly go every year. Only problem is that if you go on a package your hotel could be miles out of the centre. If you want a cheap 3 star try the Villa Maria or the Ascot. You must go to the Foreigners club at night particulary if you like dancing, its worth it just to see the waiters perform! Just round the corner from there is the theatre with a performance of folk songs every night - quite funny first time but gets a bit wearing after that. You can get ferries to Capri and Naples from Marina Piccollo which are 10 times cheaper than an organised excursion. Go to the Marina Grande during the morning and watch the fishing boats unloading their catch then have a wonderful lunch in one of the restaurants over the sea. Jules Verne Travel always have offers on for Sorrento and they are cheap too. You could do it yourself - cheap flights from Liverpool to Naples. Don't worry about Naples - just be sensible and keep to the main roads. Don't flash any bling. Cols 10-05-2005, 22:22 The train from Sorrento goes round the bay. There's a station at Pompei, right next to the ancient ruins. Sorrento is great for just sitting in cafes, drinking coffee and people watching. Worthwhile trips are Capri, walking up Vesuvias and the Amalfi coastline which has wonderful little towns hanging precariously on the cliff edges. Naples can be a bit dodgy though, lots of petty crime etc. The transfer from the airport to Sorrento can be a bit of a drag. Lots of narrow roads and tunnels once you leave the motorway. The last time I went was on a special archeological tour with Page & Moy but only recommended if you like your history. rob123 11-05-2005, 10:21 Thanks for all the contributions, they have ben very useful. |
