Hi, myself and two friends are starting postgrad courses at Sheffield Uni in September and have spotted a really great sounding house in Heeley, backing onto the railway line. What's the area like? We'd be 3 girls in the house, so security is an issue. We're not too bothered about nightlife in the area. Any help will be greatly appreciated

I live in Heeley and I realy like it.

Close enough to town to walk in, close to London Road and all the restaurants, good bus service, tram stop near by.

Not sure about the crime rates, but I haven't heard of much happeneing, and it's very quiet at night.

I lived in Heeley as a student back in 1997 (that makes me sound really old, doesn't it?)

Heeley is... alright. There are regular buses into the centre of town and you can get to and from town on foot v. easily (although it is quite a distance- I developed really strong calf muscles from all the walking!)

However, it is quite far away from town and sometimes we did feel a bit cut off. When I was there, there were only a couple of 'locals' pubs nearby. In addition, we did get burgaled and sometimes the more undesirable locals used to use our garden to urinate in (!).

On the whole it was OK, but you may want to consider moving to somewhere like Sharrow (same low price, but closer to the 'Sheffield action').

Heeley is a nice quiet area , fair few pubs knocking about and it is close enough to town (10-15 min walk ?) down bram lane.
im actually moving there in the summer but then again im not a student, my satudent friends live just off eccie road , id say if you can get a property around there that would be better suited for a student ,what with there been more students there vewry busy and also on bus ruotes+close to uni

Are you sure it's really Heeley?
Sounds like more towards the bottom of norfolk park, or norton Hammer at the bottom of Woodseats road, with a railway at the bottom of the garden. Norton Hammer is a nice quiet spot.
Heeley is ok generally but some parts to the north and east of it, is too close to arburthorne, which is best avoided. My brother used to live at heeley green and they used to get lots of junkies coming past and stealing things and breaking into his car at least 3 times in 5 years. And some of the green open spaces are where locals just let their dogs go to the toilet, never clearing up after them, meaning it's unhygenic and you can't walk on it at all.

If you're still looking, I can recommend John Brownhill as a landlord

The house we used to live in on Edmund Road (Highfields, just across queens rd from Heeley) still has his company sign outside.

He's a builder, so if anything went wrong (like the heating) he had one of his lads round the same day :)

Heeley's fine. Sheaf Inn - serves real ale. Heeley Millenium Park with famous painted horse and climbing boulder makes it a nice area. Not sure where you mean exactly, as I can't figure where houses back onto the railway line.

It's spelt Arbourthorne muddycoffee. And there's nowt wrong with Arbourthorne. The decent homes investment is transforming Arbourthorne. And the Arbourthorne Masterplan goes before cabinet this week. (Confession: I'm biased of course, as I happen to be a councillor for Arbourthorne ward, which also happens to include half of Heeley Green).

I live on Heeley Bank Road, at the bottom of Arbourthorne (close to the railway line as it happens) and it's a pretty nice place to live - although technically, where I live is in Lowfield.

Thanks for all your comments! The house is off Heeley Bank Road on Olive Grove Road if that means anything to anyone :)

Olive Grove Road is a long road that goes from Eastbank road, all the way to Midhill Road, the houses on it are terrace houses, but they don't back onto the railway line as there is a huge council works depot between the road and the train line (don't worry it's not a s bad as it sounds, you can't realy see it, except for the huge dome that they store the grit in).

I live on Slate Street, which is across Heeley Bank Road from Olive Grove Bus Depot. I moved to Sheffield last June, and I've had/heard of no problems round about this area. I love it - and I intend to stay here for as long as i live in Sheffield.

We just bought a house on Spurr Street last August, having been renting an apartment at Royal Plaza (West St) for a year. It's very different to living on West Street I can tell you!

It's a nice quiet area, and Olive Grove Rd is right next to a 51 bus stop and Netto is very handy for cheap shopping. It takes me 25mins to walk to the Cathedral when I'm feeling energetic! It's not very 'studenty' - quite a lot of families on our road.

When I was a student at Shef Uni I used to live on Gell Street (just off West St) and I feel a lot safer out on my own here compared to there. It's the type of place where you get friendly neighbours and people washing their cars & gardening on a sunday afternoon!

It does feel a little bit cut off from the City (although anywhere would having lived on West St) and there aren't many shops/bars etc nearby but enough stuff within walking distance to get by, and being able to park your car outside you own house (which you probably wouldn't be able to if you lived closer into town) makes a big difference!

If you have any other questions just let me know x

It's a nice street, so go for it. And the big bonus is that you'd be at the foot of the Heeley mountain, and near one of the best bus routes, and it's a quick walk to town from there. Heeley's one of the most central areas to live in yet it doesn't feel too 'urban'.

My mate has a fantastic terraced house there - done it up beautifully. But back to the point - he hasn't had any trouble there and his neighbours always look after his house and cat when he's away which is one of those lovely neighbourly things that make go 'awww'....
