View Full Version : Bored with HaHa & All Bar one; any recommendations?
Carrie26 09-05-2005, 11:22 Hello,
We usually go out once a week mid week for a a bite to eat & bottle of wine. The usual haunts are HaHa bar, All Bar one, Marias or the Indian Chef (I live in Crookes).
Can anyone give me any ideas of somewhere new to try, looking for similar type of food to Ha Ha bar & a decent wine list is essential!
Many Thanks
Carrie x

The new bar on Ecclesall rd - 543 or whatever - quite nice - u can't book, u just turn up - food has been lovely whenever Ive been.
Have fun.
neeeeeeeeeek 09-05-2005, 11:33 I can't think of anywhere that sells food that is as bad as the Ha Ha bar so you might have to try eating something nicer. Try the Priory.
:)
funkster 09-05-2005, 11:54 Check out Tequila on west street they have a fantastic new menu. www.tequilatapasbar.com www.soulphisticated.net
What about Spinrocs in Crookes?
I don't know if the Lions Lair is still open (I heard they were in trouble) next to Cole Brothers, but the food was ok there (if not a bit expensive)
Riverside Bar on Mowbray Street (end of Corporation Street) isn't bad. The food is of an acceptable standard and reasonably priced, it's a smart & comfortable venue and to drink I am happy with the beer range - about 4 different real ales and range of Belgium Beers, plus German Warsteiner Lager. There appears to be a good choice of wines too but I cannot vouch for that!
I agree with neeeeeeeeeek on the food at the Ha Ha bar being pretty poor!
Have you tried Hanrahan's up on Glossop Road? Very good menu and decent enough wines.
Ousetunes 09-05-2005, 14:33 There are loads of places to try. In the past three or four weeks I've eaten out at:-
Mashouse (7 out of ten)
Hanrahan's (8)
Shiny Sheff (7)
Three Merry Lads (8)
Mama and Amalfi's (8)
Piccolo's (9)
Cross Scythes (Totley) (7)
Clay Oven (5)
Storymakers (Rotherham) (4)
and no doubt some others I can't remember. Get out there and give 'em all a go!
Carrie26 09-05-2005, 14:34 Thanks for your feed back, proberbly try 543 on Eccie Road.
I agree totally about the food at Ha Ha (and the service) being crap hence my posting!
Went to Antibos on Friday, had tuna - £16.99 plus had to pay extra £1.95 for 4 chips! Wouldn't mind but I was still starving when I had finished!
After reading all the Forum postings we tried BB's last month & have to agree it was brilliant, massive portions & the best steak ever!
Thankyou!!

Mashouse - 'okay'
Hanrahan's - always good value
Shiny Sheff - must have been a good day
Three Merry Lads - very good
Mama and Amalfi's - nice!
Piccolo's - easily the best
Cross Scythes (Totley) - recommended
Clay Oven - atrocious
Storymakers (Rotherham) - incredibly poor
and no doubt some others I can't remember. Get out there and give 'em all a go!
fraserwilson 10-05-2005, 08:26 I don't know how late the Dev Cat serves food but it's always a good bet for drinking!
Dev Cat serves food until 8, however in my recent experience the food takes forever to come and isn't of that greater quality.
This is a shame, as it used to be good, standards seem to have slipped!
That said I will still happily go drinking there - the massive range of beer is still top notch, if a bit expensive.
Trippets, great vine, great food, great music and the lovely Bill.
