When I am not ******* about on this Forum (wonder if that word will be edited by the mighty force that is this great facility) I am also a bit of an addict on this front myself, having spent 20 years hard at it.
If you need help of a more general nature then please do PM me and I will do my best to point you in the direction of your ancestors and their homesteads
PaulTansley 21-10-2003, 22:56 I may be able to help you on the Lingards, does Frank ring any bells.
The Gillotts i know two sets of them and the revell family to, maybe theres a connection.
Mrs Revillle was of German origin, are we close.
UPDATE
Sorry mistake, i meant Mrs Lingard was of German Origin not Reville.
I have emailed you.
riddo7up 28-10-2003, 06:51 There was a Lingard who was a professional photographer who had his business on Churchdale Road Frecheville during the 1940-50 perion. Hope that is useful

I tried this site Yorkie. It couldn't find me,my wife or my mother, after that I gave up.
last year i found some of mine on the census for the 1800s.
is it 1881 or something.
i also found a lot of records of my family on the http://www.familysearch.org/ try all the different search indexes on the left.
this search site is run by the church of latter day saints,
who are a charity that specialise in birth marriage and death records.
but i have tried the 1901 census site and find it cant find anything
at all. its a bit rubbish.
no mr fogg,
you wouldn't, not unless you were around in 1901.

Oh dear!
The National Census takes place every 10 years (the last one was in 2001) and has done since 1801. However the early ones (1801 - 1831) were not much good to genealogists as they only listed numbers of people and not names. From 1841, names, addresses and ages were given (later including occupations) and the 1881 census, which is available on CD-rom, was the first one to be released 'en bloc' for ordinary Joe Public like me and you to buy and search at leisure.

The Church of the Latter Day Saints is not a charity but actually a church (they are better known as the Mormons) and their followers belive in the 'family' as the be all and end all. That is why they collect family data and store it away. Their base is in Salt Lake city in Utah, where they have a massive underground storage place containing millions of records, which are of immense use to amateur genealogists like me. They run many local family research centres (ours is at Grenoside) where you can go and do your research.
Tara - are you sure that the people you have found are your family and not just people with the same surname? Have you checked your sources from parish records, civil records etc.
If you can't find someone on the 1901 census (which was the last one to be released (they can only be released after 100 years have elapsed), then start with yourself and work back, using birth, marriage and death certificates. I'm sure you'll find someone then, rather than just taking pot luck.
Hope this helps.
Yes its my family.
I have my family tree on genes connected.
I also found a long lost relative on the genes connected site
who was also researching my family .with the info i found she sent for a copy of my great grandfathers marriage certificate
etc.
ive been at this for 3 yrs now .
but at first i got the wrong line.
but then matched everything up with the right one .i already had the info from other census but wanted to try the same family on the 1901 sensus to see where they were living then.

I know Tara, but my grandparents were and their names drew a blank as well.
Don't know if it's any help - but there was a 'Lingard's' hardware store on Langsett Road maybe up into the late 1970's/early 80's.
I remember going there with my dad for nails - there were literally thousands of tiny drawers with all sorts of nails, screws...allsorts. It was kind of like the wand shop in the Harry Potter movies....err....but with hardware. :)
In fact - you can see a picture of it in it's prime here:

Have you tried slightly different spellings of their surname, the 1901 census commisioned by the PRO has got to be the worst containing transcription errors. I bet they are on there somewhere but my guess is that their name has been transcribed slightly different or even omitted from the data base.
For example if their surname was "Birgin"
try Burgin, Birgen etc.
mr. fogg
i tried all relations but touched lucky on my grandfather on that latter day saints site.
have you joined genes connected.-a branch off from friends reunited.
Thanks Tara. I will keep it up and see who I can find.

Never give up on family.
Join Sheffield Archives on Shoreham Street and search all their Birth, Marriage and Death records since 1837. You obtain a reference number from them and then go to the Registry Office to obtain a Birth Certificate etc. They were £7.50 each - 4 years ago when I last bought some.
It's worth it - although you can't hug a family tree - you can leave behind a worthwhile document for your future generations to look back on, perhaps with some early 21st Century comments and photo's for them to treasure.

If you cant get there in person due to work etc, you can do it all online from the comfort of your home.
You can search the Birth, Marriage and Death records 1837+ pay per view at www.1837online.com
Alternatively for free at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl
but be aware the records on this site are not 100% complete as they're still in progress transcribing them.
Finally once you've found the reference number for your certificate you can order them online at:
www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificate/index.asp#0
Each certificate costs £7.00 to order online and takes approx one week to arrive, longer if the gro are busy.
