View Full Version : 9th May - British Sandwich Week
LoopyLou 09-05-2005, 07:02 This week is british sandwich week honest! (http://www.sandwich.org.uk/sweek.asp)
So, what sandwich will you be eating in celebration at this wondorous event.
for me it will be brie and apple on a white baguette - with mayo.
what will it be tomorrow??????
I love Tomato Potted Meat and Salad Cream. It is a real problem finding Tomato & Beef Potterd Meat, most places only sell Beef Potted Meat. Morrisons stock my lovely flavour but as soon as it goes on the shelves it's gone!!!
There must be a secret Tomato Potted Meat Horder somewhere. It is also impossible to get it if you venture too far away from Sheffield! I to have it with Salad Cream though. I have passed this addiction onto my kids.
Please everyone try it - it's lovely. Actually don't if you live in Chapeltown please it's hard enough to get my supplys already.
BoppinBruce 09-05-2005, 07:50 The Question is What is a British Sandwich? The first one recorded, from which the name is taken, was devised by Earl of Sandwich to enable him to eat and still join in the escapades of The Hell Fire Club not taking time away to eat his dinner.
I guess he had neither potted beef nor brie and apple in a bagette

redrobbo 09-05-2005, 08:01 Only the other day did I read in the paper that the Mexican wrap is taking over from the British sandwich - so can well believe we have a sandwich promotion week.
My favourite sandwich has got to be pastrami with tomato, lettuce, a little cress and wafer-thin cucumber, between slices of wholemeal bread, (no butter or mayo).

Doesn't sound particularly likely. Which paper was it?
Either way, if I wanted the moisture sucked out of my mouth by a dry lump of flat bread, a wrap is great. Otherwise, I'll stick with my sarnies, thanks ;)
Mine would be a crusty baguette, buttered [not margarine], with Cheshire cheese and beetroot slices. I might have it with either Yorkshire Gold tea, a pint of quality Beer or a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, depending on the mood and location.
I think smoked chicken and avocado sarnies are my favourite, on that brown bread with the seeds and bits of straw and stuff in it.
Fish finger and tomato sauce sandwiches are best for a light supper snack or when very drunk.

Absolutely spot-on! As a post-pub snack you can't beat a fish finger buttie with ketchup.
During the day I'm very partial to a roast ham and english mustard on a large, floury white breadcake. Or the one they do at relish with paté, bacon and onion marmalade... Thank goodness it's time for dinner soon :)
Draggletail 09-05-2005, 15:11 Mozarella and tomato on a hot panini with a smidge of pesto
Do baguettes and panini's count LoopyLou?
Not 'Kingsmill' is it :D

I can believe that. I have noticed more and more variations appearing.

Wraps have less carbs than two doorsteps of white bread, and are much better for some types of sarnie, especially when the ingredients are hot, as bread tends to go soggy.
