View Full Version : What's your absolute favourite restaurant in Sheffield?
hillsgal 14-09-2008, 17:38 Just interested in where other people prefer to eat out and what the most popular types of food are...we eat out quite often, everything from Thai to Italian to Middle Eastern to traditional English, and we've got a lot of favourite restaurants, but it'd be nice to try somewhere new if there's anywhere fantastic we didn't know about.
What do you all think?
PinkyCharl 14-09-2008, 19:38 7 Spices on west bar

sheffchick 14-09-2008, 22:06 Not been fortunate enough to be taken for a meal in a while but used to love Bahn Thai on london road
Soooo nice
Seasons on Abbeydale Rd - fab food, great service, lovely cosy atmosphere.

Have you been since it was taken over? Is it still as good as it was? Heard some not so good reviews shortly after the change over. :(

Thanks - I've definitely been since then, still as good as ever.
Dark Moomin 15-09-2008, 13:33 Thanks - I've definitely been since then, still as good as ever.
I'm so glad, only went once beofer it was taken over and it was one of the best restaurant experiences ever!
The Milestone sunday dinners, amazing...
My absolute favourite is marco @ milano but closely followed by cafe guru, Mish mash, wig & pen, baan Thai and Wasabisabi :-)
piccolos on west street!
That's on my list as well.
I love La Mancha on West Street
brianthedog 15-09-2008, 14:36 The Siam Inter on London Road. Everything about the place is absolutely fantastic; beer, staff, food, service, price, physical restaurant, etc etc etc... Hands down the best Thai restaurant in Sheffield.
daisycat 15-09-2008, 15:07 Cafe Ceres on Sharrow Vale Road is brilliant (open Fri and Sat nights) - lovely food and the service is always excellent.

I didn't realise that was open in the evening at weekends. It's my favourite spot for a cooked breakfast in Sheffield (the exact opposite of a greasy spoon breakfast). Is it BYOB or licensed?
pattricia 15-09-2008, 15:12 I dine out a lot so am taking note of this thread.
daisycat 15-09-2008, 15:12 Cafe Ceres is BYOB (£1.50 corkage or thereabouts).
(Sorry - should have been a quote there)
Ousetunes 15-09-2008, 15:19 I like:
Indian (after a skinfull of ale): Seven Spices
Indian (before a skinfull): Cafe Guru
Italian: Piccolo's
Wine Bar / Restaurant: West 10
Pub Grub: Sportsman (Hallam)
Pizza/burgers: Yankees
Fish: Loch Fyne
Jannerboy 15-09-2008, 16:17 I've only been in Sheffield for a few months but our out and out favourite has to be Thyme cafe in Broomhill. They don't take bookings so you have to turn up and hope, sometimes they might tell you come back in an hour, but they'll generally fit you in. The food is fantastic, huge and honest, and the staff are great too. We went there for our wedding night and had a great time.
Also Cream cafe, also in Broomhill, is a great place to go for coffee, tea and decent salads.
shaggy123 15-09-2008, 17:17 I would second cafe ceres....run by true foodies.
staff allways spot on too.
If anyone doesn't know my favorite?
I'm almost too embarrassed to post it - yet again
Alastair 15-09-2008, 17:24 Marco at Milano is excellent.
Previously I would have said Jabu, the Szechuan hotpot place, but sadly it closed in mysterious circumstances.
johnbradley 15-09-2008, 17:45 Take away - Nether Edge Kebab House
Italian - Pasta Bar
Thai - Baan Thai
Indian - Saffron Club / Mogul Room
hillsgal 15-09-2008, 20:05 The Siam Inter on London Road. Everything about the place is absolutely fantastic; beer, staff, food, service, price, physical restaurant, etc etc etc... Hands down the best Thai restaurant in Sheffield.
I think I prefer the Baan Thai myself...although that could be entirely due to the fact that when I went to the Siam Inter I had a jungle curry which tasted fabulous until I absent-mindedly ate an entire green chili in one go, having mistaken it for a bit of green pepper (that'll teach me to pay attention to my food!). I really wanted to keep eating cos the curry tasted amazing, but it's the only meal I've ever had that was physically painful and I'm pretty good with hot food! I should give the Siam Inter another go though, we've been to the Baan Thai quite a lot and it's always good to have a change.

Is that the one on London Road? Damn, I've been meaning to go there for a while but never got round to it!
We made a Szechuan hotpot ourselves at home a while ago, it was fabulous.

I lived in Thailand for 3yrs and haven't quite got my taste buds round to eating in a UK Thai place yet. Although we did look at the menus of those places and they did look very tempting, now I just have to get my head round paying those prices, and telling them I want it Thai spicy
hillsgal 15-09-2008, 21:32 Can anyone tell me anything about Seasons on Abbeydale Road or Cafe Ceres? I can't find anything useful online. Mostly I'd just like to get an idea what sort of food they serve, what the vegetarian options are like and what the price range is. I don't know either of them and quite a few people seem to like them, so I might have to try them out.
I should probably post my favourite restaurants as well - I can't narrow it down to a particular type of food cos that all depends what mood I'm in, but here are my ultimate favourites...
Italian - Piccolo's on West Street or La Scala in Millhouses
Thai - Baan Thai
Chinese - Hei Moon in Hillsborough (Middlewood Road opposite the park) or Wong Ting in town (Matilda Street)
Middle Eastern - Rowsha in Walkley or Shiraz on Abbeydale Road
Japanese - LOVE the veg tempura noodle soup at East Ocean, but that's about the only veggie dish they do that isn't just plain veg stir-fry! I'm planning to try Tokyou, the new noodle bar at Castle Square soon (as recommended here - http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=380710&highlight=noodle)
Indian sub-continent - Kashmir Curry Centre on Spital Hill, 7 Spices at West Bar or Balti King in Broomhill (controversially, since everyone seems to think it's only bad food for drunk students. It's not, unless you turn up roaring drunk at 1am).
I love the Olive Bar (http://www.sheffieldtelegraph.co.uk/foodguide/A--sophisticated-Olive.3419310.jp)
Its great, its classy, it had a great beer garden and the food is delicious.

This is the websire for Seasons:
http://www.seasonsbistrosheffield.co.uk/
For Chinese food it's got to be Mei's on Charles Street :)
Moran's (http://www.moranssheffield.co.uk/) is the best restaurant I've been to in Sheffield. It's on Abbeydale Road South, just before you get to Dore station.
Thai at the Travellers (http://www.thaiatthetravellers.co.uk/) is the best Thai. Though of course it's not quite in Sheffield, it's in Holmesfield.
The Shiraz Persian restaurant on Abbeydale Road is also well worth a visit.
Donna_Row 16-09-2008, 11:19 The Milestone at Kelham Island - amazing food, brilliant atmosphere and the service is fantastic. I love spending lazy Sunday afternoons there!

Cafe Ceres serve simple french food cooked to perfection. My boyfriend and I ate there on Friday night - he had cod fillet in white wine sauce and fresh veg, I had pork chop with potatoes dauphinoise (sp?). For pudding we each had the lemon tartlette (heaven!). Our bill came to £22 including corkage for our wine (it's BYO) which I think is very reasonable. For vegetarians there isn't a marvellous choice but the menu changes frequently and there are always a couple of options (eg french onion tart, vegetable lasagne) available. Hope this helps Hillsgal!
It's good to see the same names coming round again and again. I'm a big fan of Baan Thai, Wasabi Sabi, the Pasta Bar (especially the puds!). And a quick mention for the New Zing Vaa on Ecclesall Road South - I've never found a chinese takeaway that even gets close!

I'd agree with you on that.
And you can watch them cook it up too.
johnwilson09 19-09-2008, 01:25 Probably La Luna...
surfinjim 19-09-2008, 02:03 Jinnah Kashmeri at Ecclesfield
Jim:thumbsup:
brianthedog 19-09-2008, 07:27 I'm surprised how many people prefer Bann Thai to the Siam Inter. Although Baan Thai is very good, it's just lacking something which makes it feel like proper thai food.
As for decent Chinese take-aways, I reckon Happiness on Abbeydale Road (just before the lights down from Tesco) takes some beating. Well worth a visit.
Roziedog 20-09-2008, 16:11 Try Sellors in Dronfield it is only open Friday and Saturday nights, but the food is amazing. It is behind the Sidings pub.
hillsgal 20-09-2008, 16:59 I'd agree with you on that.
And you can watch them cook it up too.

I used to love New Zing Vaa when I lived in Broomhill, in fact even after I moved away I was sometimes known to drive all the way there from Hillsborough!
Can't fault the Hei Moon in Hillsborough though, it's a restaurant & also does takeaway and the food is fantastic.

Never having had Thai food in Thailand (although it's towards the top of my list of places I want to go!) I wouldn't recognise it if the Baan Thai wasn't proper Thai food...I've only been to the Siam Inter once and I'd definitely go again just for a change, but I can't find fault with the Baan Thai at all - food, price, atmosphere, surroundings & service are all great.
akbars of bradford on meadow bank road in rotherham
medicgirl 20-09-2008, 19:25 Agree absolutely about Thyme Cafe - truly fabulous quite inventive food and although not cheap, great value for money for what you get. Also a huge fan of Catch in Crosspool - run by the same people as Thyme Cafe (no they don't pay me, I wish they did) - beautiful fish dishes, outstanding.
Also like the Milestone, East One, Wasabisabi, Spinrocs in Crookes (though mourn the old menu from before the refurb, new one is nowhere near as good) and on the Thai debate, I am still mourning the loss of Bahn Nah and have yet to try one even half as good (Bahn Thai is not even close, but not tried Siam Inter).
Cafe Guru for Indian.
Marco at Milano for an Italian treat.
Rush Hour at Heeley.
Lastly I love a good carvery and I don't think you can beat Toby Carvery even though I know that it's production line food.
Espanyol 01-10-2008, 15:37 I like East Ocean Cafe on Matilda Street near The Moor. Very trendy settings and good quality food at a reasonable price. Two meals plus starters as well as bottle of wine 26 squid. Steal!
piccolos on west street!
Good ole Piccolos!!
I have 2 , Cafe Oyes do a great turkish night and kito's the foods fab
UpTheBlades 04-10-2008, 16:37 Rafters in Nether Green, consistently great food & great service IMO

:BUTLERS BALTI HOUSE OPPOSITE THE OLD JESSOPS JUST RECENLT FOUND OUT PABLO PICASSO BEEN THERE TOO WHEN IT WAS A CAFE FOR 90 YEARS, CHECK OUT WEB SITE WWW.BUTLERSBALTI.COM. MY FAVORITE.
grub_lover 18-11-2008, 13:06 If your a fan of sushi or even noodles, try sakushi on campo lane!
amazing stuff!
i wanna tell the world, such good food and service!
The Idler 18-11-2008, 13:40 3 pages in and no mention of Zeugma's (London Rd?). :o
Espanyol 18-11-2008, 16:16 For Sushi and Noodles, its got to be Yama Sushi on London Road. You can pick and choose your own fish from the chiller and it always has special offers. Temaki Salmon Sushi only £1.50 and Tsingtao Beer only £1.60 on special promo. Its a steal!
I can recommend Hui Wei (Chinese) and Sheiks (Lebanese) on West Street.
My fave was Kumquat Mae on London Road but it seems to have closed. Anyone know what happened to it?
kateykate 19-11-2008, 20:39 Rossis! - Italian on Sharrow Lane. Nice tasty food and friendly but not too friendly staff and a door man in a ridiculous costume! What more could you want? So boring never try anywhere else though cos I stick to what I know is good.
sierraman 19-11-2008, 20:46 not quite a restaurant, a gastro put, but the Cricket at Totley... 3 courses £12. Can't fault it!
For good basic pub food nothing beats the Fat Cat. The meals usually consist of some sort of pie (vegy's are well catered for) with roast potatoes, peas and gravy all for a bargin £4.20....hearty honest food =)
Great selection of beers and wine available too.
sierraman 19-11-2008, 20:52 Harlequin is good, so is Kelham. Fat Cat tends to smell strange, can't put my finger on the odour, maybe of toilets!!
dizzy lizzy 19-11-2008, 23:21 for a great italian you've got to try pepes mama mia near hillsborough.Italian food is lovely and their fillet steak is to die for.
Masquerade 10-11-2009, 13:03 I like East Ocean Cafe on Matilda Street near The Moor. Very trendy settings and good quality food at a reasonable price. Two meals plus starters as well as bottle of wine 26 squid. Steal!
sounds like you're quite close to this restaurant and yama sushi (which i believe are owned by the same people) - can you confirm why east ocean has closed down if it is that great?? just interested that's all...
skydanser 11-11-2009, 18:25 Butler's Balti all the way!!
cloudjuice 11-11-2009, 23:51 jabus is still open, passed it tonight and checked.
