New to the Forum.

I am looking for historical information regarding public transport in Sheffield, mid 1800s to date. Trams, buses, railways, canal etc.

Can anybody out there help please? Did anybody work on the transport networks of the city, if so what tales can you tell?

MY father worked on the old trams and said that due to the large amount of motorbike and sidecars about that time they were continually getting caught in the lines and couldn't get out. In fact he once had a fatality hit him.

He was also stood at the terminus I think at Abbey Lane one thursday afternoon. As thursday was half day closing then not a lot of people were about. On the lower deck in thev saloon was just a a lady with her son. On looking up he saw a coal wagon coming down the hill as it got closer he could see knowone was driving it. As he stood no chance of getting out of it's way he got under the stairs. The wagon hit the tram and took it of the tracks and pushed it into the front of a row of shops. As the dust settled he remembered the lady. He opened the door to the saloon and asked her if she was alright. To which she replied no my son, as he looked across there was a pair of legs up in the air wiggling about. So he went in and removed them both as the lady was filled in half way up her chest.

An Excellent book on the History of Public transport in Sheffield called Sheffield Transport by Chas C Hall published in 1977 it is now out of print. The ISBN 0-903839-04-0. It should be available at Sheffield Libraries. Another book of interest published by the Libraries dept in 1985 covers Sheffield Corporation Tramsways by Kenneth Gandy ISBN 0 86321 032 5
Hope this is of use. A trip to Circh Tramway village is also worth while as it has a good collection including some from Sheffield.

Thanks to Slimboyfat, desy and silverknight for your very quick responses. I will certainly follow things up as suggested.

Desy's story is exactly the type of thing I am looking for. Transport history is so often the forgotten social history subject, and the wealth of stories which must be out there relating to Sheffield transport will make interesting reading.

Thanks guys

Quite a few articles about buses on the Forum, I entered a few myself as an ex bus inspector, if you can find the one about the experimental buses in the early 80s wich I submitted, I think you will find that interesting.
