Dear all,
The British Othello (also known as Reversi) Federation will be holding its annual National Tournament in Sheffield this year on the 27th and 28th of September at the Heeley Institute, Hartley Street
All are welcome to this event, dont be put off by ability, as there is usually a wide range on display.
This is a great chance to meet some players that can and will help you improve your game.
Further details of the event can be found here:
britishothello.org.uk/nationalchampionships.html
If you have any questions please feel free to post here
Thanks
David Beck
Hello all,
It occurs to me that i didnt give much information regarding this, so thought id detail a little further.
Othello is a absract stratagy game in the same league as chess or checkers and just as challanging. however unlike chess its very quick to learn and understand the basics of strategy.
A good discription is given here: .en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reversi
The tournament itself will be 9 rounds over 2 days (thats 3 on the saturday + 6 on the sunday) with a 1 game final on Sunday for the top 2.
The British federation will hold an Annual General Meeting at 13:00 with tournament play starting at 14:00.
So if anyone would like to come along to see whats happening and is unsure if they would want to compete. I will be happy to sit down and give tutorials between 13:00 and 14:00.
This event won't be returning to Sheffield on an annual basis so this may well be the only chance you get to have a look at a tournament near you.
Thanks for reading and again, please leave me a message here if you'd like any questions answering.
David

Hey, that's great. I remember playing and loving Othello when I was younger but I haven't heard of it in such a long time. I'm surprised that it is popular and that there are even tournaments of Othello. I travel regularly to Sheffield for work and am not 100% sure that I’ll be there for the tournament but I’ll definitely try to arrange it that I will. I might even enter but I fear that I’ll be very rusty. I think I might have take to refresher tutorial. Can I still easily buy the Game in shops in the UK? I haven’t seen it in so long.
Hi to Both,
Redhotjo: unfortunatly we don't currently run a junior tournament, though this something i will add to the AGM.
The Turner family usually attend, both husband and wife play as well as their two daughters who i believe are 8 and 14! I will check to see if they are coming for you as this will at least offer some competition within the same age group.
Even so, although probably daunting for her, everyone is friendly and will make her welcome if she would like to attend.
Namely i forgot to mention that if you do plan to attend please inform the tournament director Adelaide Carpenter, who can be reached on:
atc12@mole.bio.cam.ac.uk
and also that there is an entry fee for tournaments but your first is usually free. again something that i will clarify shortly.
aaron:Othello has been getting more and more popular especially due to the number of online sites that offer the game. The best being:
playok.com
This tournament will decide who goes through to the World Championships in Norway later this year, which has been running for 32 years now and gets bigger each time.
The last i checked othello wasnt the easiest game to get hold of, argos no longer appear to stock it, i have seen it in specialist game stores. However im from Colchester so that doesnt help you too much.
You can purchase the game from amazon easily though:
amazon.co.uk/Character-Options-1456-Othello/dp/B0006D3I4G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=kids&qid=1221482096&sr=1-1
Hope that helps and that we see you in two weeks.
David.

There used to be a Challengers' tournament held alongside the British Championships. In those days one had to qualify for the British Championships by coming high enough in one of a number of preceding regional tournaments. The tournament winner qualified for the following years British Championships. it was dropped 15 years ago or so when only about four players took part.
All,
For those who are interested and as per my previous posts, i can confirm that this will be a free event if you have not yet attended a British Tournament, which i think goes for the majority.
Cheers
David.
