View Full Version : Cross Addy Street, Upperthorpe, Any memories
Do we have anyone who use to live on Cross Addy Street. It was up from Upperthorpe Baths and was the next road on the right past the Scarborough pub. The pub at the end of the road was the Victoria with a grocers at the other side. That was originally owned by Marshall's and later by the Goldthorpes. At the other end was Lilly's hairdressers and Marriotts haulage warehouse across from the was another corner shop.
HI
Did'nt live on Cross Addy Street, but have fond memories - had a few mates lived there.
We lived in the corner shop just below Crookesmoor School - diagonally opposite the Ashberry Pub.
There was a great fish and chip shop on Addy Street just round the corner from Cross Addy Street - used to sell 6d 'special' which was either fishcake (sheffield type) or chips with mushy peas on top and plenty of scraps. When you were walking back from the baths on a cold winters evening it was a real treat
Yes run by the Mason's he died some time back his wife lives on Norfolk Park. Strangley my mother bumped into the lady who worked there after they sold it.
My folks now live at Hackenthorper but when Mum goes to the Castle Market every Friday, she still bumps into people from the Addy Street area - I guess working in the shop every day helps people recognise her.

I remember the family living in that shop below the school. Back in the sixties it used to belong to Meluish? Or is this another shop I am thinking of?
I spent many happy days at Upperthorpe swimming baths as a lad also.... is it still open?

I am that Melluish!!!
Taking a guess - are you Andrew - now living in Oz???
harwink2 22-02-2006, 07:10 Came across the site again.... Mark Meluish? yep, I remember and I am living downunda... that's Perth. WA. The Ashbury pub was the best place to be when collecting money around bonfire night... Quite a few of us kids lived in the area during the sixties. Anyone remember names such as Sweeny, Garton, Titterton, Metcalf, Willis and burgoyne? And do Upperthorpe swimming baths still exist?
This post brought up a few memories.
A long time ago I went to school with a lad from Addy Street.
His name was Roy Tandy.
I often wondered how his life had turned out.
Anybody know of him.
Happy Days!
Hi Andrew - hope you are keeping well down under - if I recall your family went out there while we were still at Myers Grove so you have been there a good number of years mate - it must be good!
I went across to Oz a few years ago on business - stayed in Melbourne for about a week and thought it was one of the best places on Earth I have ever visited. I can see why so many people, especially families, are attracted to it.
As to those 'names' - the only one that has been mentioned on this site was Tim Metcalfe and his two elder twin brothers.
At last mention, which was last year sometime, Tim had a pub in Lincolnshire somewhere.
You mentioned collecting with the guy outside the Ashberry - do you rememer some of the great bonfires we had on the 'spare' ground just below our shop? - I think half the fun was the build up to the night - the 'gang' sitting round teh fire keeping guard so no one raided it - we always seemd to get an old sofa to sit on - distant but fond memories
Know john Willis can't remember his elder brothers name.
harwink2 23-02-2006, 06:23 Possibly David Willis, could be wrong though. And Mark, I came back in 72, remember seeing you in the Buccaneer pub with some shiela? Came back out in 90 to Oz....Still miss the pubs back home.

Andy...yep it was David Willis. As to our meeting in the Buccaneer - I remember now...I even remember the girls name...it was Kim. That place has very fond memories, but is the subject of another thread on this board.
Am I wrong but during the time you were back did you know a guy called John Duggan?....its just when I remember him your name comes to mind.
Another name has just come back...remember John Taylor?...he lived down Springvale Road, almost opposite Cross Addy Street
I moved away from Sheffield 20 years ago, but still go back to see Mum and Dad, I drove down Crookesmoor Road and Addy Street a few months ago, you would'nt recognise the place, apart from the School.
Do you remember the hardware shop at the end of your street?...that was a real Alladins Cave...smell of paraffin etc....he sold those balsa wood gliders for a few pennies which you threw around till they landed on someones roof or got smashed.
Upperthorpe Library is still there, not sure about the Swimming Baths...the building was there. I just remembered.... I am sure you and I passed our swimming test on the same day (Mr Price was the instructor I think)...two lengths of the baths without touching the floor and then we were with the kids who could haunt the deep end and not float around in the shallow end with cork floats.
Another thread on this board is about Sheffiled United Transport (SUT) did'nt you live opposite an SUT driver? - I am sure I can remember an SUT coach parked outside his house ocasionally...or I may be dreaming.
harwink2 27-11-2006, 07:52 Hey Mark, just logged on after a few months away... John Duggan was a mate of mine, saw him for years until he went down to London around 76. Kept in touch but I believe he lives in South Africa now. John Taylor was an aquantance as a kid. I remember him doing diving at school, was in some sort of competition I think? Funnily enough I was doing an electronics course at Stannington College in the early seventies and ended up partnered with his big brother David Taylor.
I remember the SUT coach as well, suspect the driver was up to no good, always wondered why there were so many of us kids looked like him!
On a different tack.. was talking to a bloke at work who attended Totley College, niether of us could remember the names of the two pubs up there... spent many a time in them, also the pub opposite City Hall on the corner in the seventies... anyone?
In Uppers 27-11-2006, 14:45 OOOOh this is all very spooky.
I have always lived in Upperthorpe (although I think you're talking before my time), and now live on Ashberry Road.
Can't remember pub tho!!

Hiya Mate
good to hear from you again.
One of the Pubs up at Totley was the Fleur de Lys I think. Can't remember the name of teh other - yet.
The pub opposite the City HAll, in BArkers Pool, was called The Albert, a grand boozer,I belive they found a bloody great hole underneath it and had to close it down. Not been down in the centre of Sheff for donkey's years but I beleive there is a Cafe/Bar there now.
Hiyah
Yes the Ashburry pub also had a football team and they travelled way out to woodhouse too play the home games.
We lived diagonally opposite the Ashberry Pub during the 1960's. It was run by a couple, whose names I can't remember (my old Mum may - I will call her in the morning) but I can see them both in my head as if it were yesterday.
She, heavily made up, lots of 'bling' (not called that in those days) and very loud. He small, appeared timid would'nt say boo to a goose, but both very friendly.
Saturday night at teh pub always ended up in a singalong - many is the night that I have gone to sleep with the tap room in full voice belting out a selection from the 'Desert Song' or something like that - what a lullaby.
Addy St. was where a great mate of mine lived and of the female variety, she was a gem. Pat Arnold (her name then). A regular in the Scarborough.
In Uppers 28-11-2006, 12:55 I drink with Pat every weekend.
In Uppers 28-11-2006, 13:06 Jossman,
I've just rang Pat & told her you said she was a gem. She said thanks but as 'Jossman' is an alias, she can't think who you are.

I remember Mick Ratley, he was a nephew of a mate of mine, Arnold Ratley, who now lives in Oxford. Mick's mom & dad were Ted & Joan. Ted sadly died quite a few years ago, Joan now lives in Coventry I think.
I do not come from that area but during the War our house suffered bomb damage at Pitsmoor and we lived on Ashberry Rd at an aunt's and I attended Crookesmoor School for a short time. I have fond memories of the area especially sledgeing down Bannon Street in winter. The chip shop on Ashberry Rd and Thew's little shop next door.
How about just round the corner from Ashberry the newsagents Whiteheads and the little ice cream factory in the yard behind that only opened occasionally.
Also the Albino West indian guy that lived at the top of Oxford street

Whiteheads newsagents - he gave me my first job -delivering Sunday papers to the flats on Martin Street. Come Guy Fawkes night he would sell the usual 'selection boxes' but then he would have a large wooden tray where the kids could pick 1d bangers, catherine wheels etc. - not sure whether that would be allowed now!!
Hi harwink i lived in Upperthorpe and married one of the Gartons still see John Taylor occaisionally

Hi mini b
Was it Alan you married? - if so, pass him my regards from Mark who used to live at the corner shop opposite the Ashberry.- and John Taylor, I went onto Friends Reunited recently and I am sure that I read he had been recently widowed, which is a shame given that he must be around the mid 50's like me.
Hi docmel yes i married Alan and i will pass on your regards.
docmel
Forgot to ask you did you know Neville Wright who lived near your end of Ashberry Road. He was in my year at school.
