View Full Version : Sheffield wednesday the manchester united of s/yorks
:D Sheffield Wednesday are the Manchester United of south yorkshire, before you laugh here are my reasons,
1 All the other teams in SY hate us (just like MU nationally)
2 we are the most successfull team in SY (just like MU nationally)
3 we have the biggest ground and fan base, away following etc in SY
I know all of the above points contradict the fact that at the moment we are rubbish but they are facts!
Also to all the "we are the best team in Yorkshire Blades" who may say crowds don't get you points, well surely in the long run they do, bigger crowds, more money to buy better players higher up the league. So you know we will be back at the top before long be it this time or next.
expected reply from a disallusioned blade :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:
carcrash 08-05-2005, 02:34 How much in debt are you?
If crowd's get you points why didn't you win the automatic promotion,Wigan have on average 10,000 so that contradicts your theory.UP THE BLADES

the league tables dont lie!!! yes we may have just failed to make the play offs for the second successive season but we are still a whole league above you!!
why is it wendys have to go back to attendances? this means nothing, wednesday always have always had bigger attendances but look where it has got them!
your 2nd point is true though, you are the most hated in SY, and are you at all suprised when the fans come out with comments like this? ive never heard so much crap in my life, most wednesday fans will be ashamed to be associated with you! yet i guess its this strange rule thats come into place this week, sheffield wednesday reaching the play offs magically and mysteriously means automatic promotion and all the blue and white shirts have appeared frm the darkest of places!
who agrees with me?
it's common sense that (taking out teams with rich benefactors like wigan) a football club with more fans generates more money from gates reciepts and therefore can afford better players so eventually a large fanbase will drag you out of the mire. Yes I know we are in millions and millions of debt and are in the third division but this is due to mistakes at board and management level. Eventaully this will turn around.
My original point about being the MUFC of SY is true everyone locally hates us cos we are the biggest club and no matter what division we are in we are still a scalp.
i would also like to say that after watching yesterdays match I am very fearful of our playoff hopes.

The hate is strong in this one . . . . Fear leads to hate, hate leads to suffering! Fear that the Owl Knights will soon be battling against the dark pigs in the new galaxy ( piggies like to think they're a galaxy above - even though it's just one division ) far, far away.
As for the shirts business - you lot can talk!! never seen so many red & white deck chairs come out when a result goe's your way . . which incidentally, isn't that often nowadays!! :hihi: :hihi:
thewizard 08-05-2005, 16:37 I think the number of replies this has recieved in such a short time justifies the argument.
EASY EASY EASY !!!
manortopper 08-05-2005, 18:14 Changing topic a little;
Anyone know the latest ticket situation for the home leg - are there any left?
Got mine on Friday - but I'd still like to know.

In response to your reasoning,
1. I don't hate SWFC, in fact I'd go as far to say that the Owls are a great feeder club for the pride of Sheffield and the number one club in YORKSHIRE (check league positions).
2. Errr, as above, can I assume you've not checked league positions for a couple of years?
3. You obviously subscribe to the adage "biggest is best". If you are the Man U then Blades must be the equivalent of Man City; i.e. a club with the passion and the true local fan base, not the out of town, "Ohh, who shall I support?" merchants who should really be at Millmoor, Saltergate or who are traitors to other hometown clubs further afield.
That said I do hope you manage to sneak into the Championship though. The Blades v Owls fixtures are the highlight of the season for me.
yours faithfully,
Bobby Davison.
ps can't you bring back Chris "Wicker Arches" Woods? He was so much my favourite Owl.
manortopper 08-05-2005, 19:06 Feeder club;
It's nice to give your poor downtrodden neighbours your cast-offs once in a while. If you're lucky we might have some more for you soon.

selling the blades 2 or 3 of our players is hardly feeder club territory out of . those that did join you where unsuitable for us ie been surplus to requirements accept quinn who i would have kept
as ive stated on a few threads before it dont take long for some of the bitter blades to come out of the woodwork showing there petty jealousy for all and sundry to see
have you ever considerd that those wednesday fans who live outside sheffield maybe have had to move for work or other personnel reasons
p.s are you the bobby davidson who used to play for united if so have you lost a bit of weight as the last time i saw you in a united shirt you where a bit portly :D
Panda79 those players who were not suitable for you were given a free transfer because you could not afford to keep them on.Quinn is a cracking player Monty & Bromby have not done too bad,but they are young & will be better in a few more seasons.UP THE BLADES

Yes too true but I hope the Owls get promoted, but on saturdays showing they look like Utd failing at the last moment.
have to agree tosh13 on Saturday in the first half the players looked like they had never even met before. Big improvement in the second though.
UP THE OWLS!!!!!!!!
OwlsChick 09-05-2005, 10:13 Up Da Owls

That's been the problem with Utd over the last 2 seasons, they do not know which half to start playing. But it will be good for Sheffield if the Owls go up.UP THE BLADES

what a great, well thought out and carefully planned point it is that you put across.
personally, i couldn't care less how many people turn up to the match as long as the players on the pitch are doing the business. unfortunately united have been terrible this season compared to the last couple but i would prefer wednesday to come up as the derbies are always a good day out and we could do with the extra 6 points.
also, if wednesday DO come up, they will most likely fall flat on their face and realise that their level is near the top of league 1 but definately not in the championship.
as for being the man u of sy, i dont remember seeing wednesday win 10 titles in 15 years, did you?
Please tell me you are kidding??
Haahaa!!!
Internetowl 09-05-2005, 15:17 Who have United got in the playoffs?
Silence.....
i am a life long wednesdayite, i hate nobody more than them at the lane, but to say we are the man utd of yorkshire etc is crap, we are a big team with a big crowd but nothing can bring you the title of biggest etc without big money, football has gone silly with big money and we are not big money and the blades are not a big club also... the teams like chelsea, man utd could out strip ((wed/blades put together)) on their own, sheff utd have done well for what they have to play with each season, we wednesday fans have had to put up with the mistakes others have left behind... take sunderland 47000 to see them lift the championship we cant even fully fill our 30,000 seater when we play the blades at home and the same goes for the lane... big money buys you the big time !!! wigan have done well good luck to them, the PJ knows hes gonna get 25million to play with.... cant see mr warcrap or mr stutter getting that can you. what do you think it would cost the wednesday or blades to get to the prem and stay there!!!id say around 30 million each.

miss_summers 10-05-2005, 13:12 I'd like to just say that "The Blades" are just alkward "Owl" fans.
Wednesday was established 22 years before United!

At least someone can come up with an intelligent reply :)
I personally wouldn't mind W*dn*sd*y coming up to the Championship as the gates would probably increase at both Sheffield clubs, with all the part-timers coming out of the woodwork to buy mini-season tickets.
Glory seasons and cup successes are hardly forthcoming for either team, although we Blades were spolied in the 2002/03 season.
United were always going to have a smaller fan base being the second established club in Sheffield, we also seem to be a very unfashionable club to support. Some of the "pundits'" comments seem to be evidence of this.
The bigger club = success rule is a bit daft to say the least. People would claim that out of the Merseyside clubs, Liverpool were the biggest but look at their position in relation to Everton this season. Other posters have also pointed to Wigan, where the police outnumber the home supporters three to one. Looking at past successes, Nottingham Forest would claim to be a bigger club than Derby, but again, look at the table.
W*dn*sd*y's attendances are impressive to say the least, especially compared to the rest of the clubs in the league. It would be interesting to see how this was affected if/when they spend a few more seasons in division two. Sunderland may have been seen lifting the Championship silverware by 40k but their attendances fell with a massive bump when they were relegated from the Premiership.
The rivalry will always exist between United and W*dn*sd*y, but things wouldn't be as interesting if it didn't exist :) I shall be watching the League One playoffs with interest.
8balltiger 10-05-2005, 15:57 wednesday the man ure of south yorkshire:hihi:

couldnt agree more, and, putting all rivalries aside, i wish wednesday all the best in the play-offs, afterv all, they're representing sheffield after all.

Agent Gypo 11-05-2005, 20:32 I love wednesday fans. They're like an older, bigger neighbour that thinks he's better than you, and always wants to tell you how much older and bigger he is because it some how makes him feel superior. Because we all know how much it hurts our feelings that Wednesday have a bigger fanbase.
Good luck to Wednesday in the playoffs, we're looking forward to playing you again. Also, it will be nice to get a look at some of Uniteds future players as they rise through the owls first team.

Robbie Loving 14-05-2005, 13:37 i realy do love some of the coments wednesday fans come out with........
the reason other teams hate you in SY, is cause half of there towns support owls, as for united hating you, its only natural,
yes you are the most succesful team in SY, the last thing united won was 1925 (think) and wednesday was 91 (think again) but since then, weds got to 2 finals, lost them both to arsenal and done NOTHING since, and this was 93 by the way. where as us, we have made 3 major semi finals in that time, neither one of us setting the world on fire really are we now?
yes you have the biggest ground, fan base etc....... a lot of your fans are from donny, barnsley, chessie, rotherham not just shefield, (ironicaly all in your division now) so would make sense you have bigger crowds, but also..... if you had spent what is now 13 years out of the top flight, your crowds will surely dwindle.
to say you are the man united of south yorkshire is laughable, how you can make such comparisons i really dont know.
