While surfing the net i picked up the Java/byteverify virus, my AVG anti virus picked it up and put it in the virus vault..should it be safe in there or will it be still on my pc?

It's still on your PC, but stored in a format that can not be run (under normal circumstances).

You should be fine;).

 thanks....so whats the best way of getting it of my pc i was told this BUT!!!! i can't find Java runtime?????

Clear the cache in java runtime.
turn system restore off and run anti virus.
Turn restore back on.
Turn caching of in java runtime and it should be gone.
Disabaling the cache will stop it coming back!

Try looking in your control panel for the 'Java Plugin'
Click on it (it can take a while to open)
Click on cache and then clear the JAR Cache

That should do the trick ;)

Have you checked that Sun Java is selected in your options Jon?

Start>Control Panel>Internet Options>Advanced>scroll down to where is says 'Sun Java' and check that it's selected.

You can delete the "virus" from the virus vault, if it makes you feel safer. I tend to do that with anything that's quarantined by AVG after I've viewed to see exactly which virus it is, but have to admit to not having had to do that for some time, thank goodness:smile:

I believe you can download Sun Java from Here (http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp)

Install that and set it as your default Java ;)

It's a trojan that's in the Java cache folder. I've been told that you can avoid it by:

Go to CONTROL PANEL
Double click JAVA icon
Under the GENERAL tab, click the TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES button
Under the AMOUNT OF DISK SPACE TO USE, change from MAXIMUM to 0 MB.

It will. This "fix" only affects the Java cache;).

I just thought I would re-post these. I thought your question, Jon, was asking how to completely remove the virus from your pc, but the thread seems to be concentrating on what Java programming you have etc.

Hope this helps.

Just wanted to note that this lovely little virus is back in the wild thanks to an exploit affection OpenSSL modules..

As a result you can get it through servers that aren't related to smut, etc...

Reason I know this is that a server I'm a co-owner on, was infected with the kit that started sending the byteverify trojan out...

The good news is that you can prevent this becoming an issue by ensuring you're uptodate on your Windows Updates as the exploit was patched and dealt with back last year...
