View Full Version : Kylie Minogue - Showgirl
I'm just sat here watching Kylie Minogue: Showgirl (I'm not gay, by the way), and two things have struck me:
1. She's the most Godawful live singer I've ever heard (she sounds to me like a receptionist that hasn't had time to take her Vicks Inhaler out of her nose).
2. She's totally sold out to her gay following. I found if extremely uncomfortable watching semi naked men mince around her, followed by backing boys with full make-up, bras and hotpant combos. I'm an open-minded fella, but I had to turn over due to a severe camp O.D.
So is she miming to the tracks? :o
Elphi 24 07-05-2005, 20:15 i agree - went to see her in manchester (for my daughter's birthday I hasten to add!).
Although it was a good show it was "singing by numbers" - the whole thing bored me and i actually fell asleep!
Boring, Boring concert - singing through the nose . . . I fear Kylie has had her day. The live singing lark should really be an offence for her now.
Got to say, I enjoyed a few of the songs though . . . . with the sound turned off. :hihi:
Ant,
You may well inveigh against Minogue's corncrake- like voice, and her courting of the 'pink pound' [I'm not gay either, my wife demanded that I watch it with her...honestly]. However, I recall your championing of Kylie's buttocks on my 'Who has the best arse in the world of entertainment thread''. It was an intellectually challenging thread, pitched at a higher plane of abstraction than is usually found on the forum. I remember you compared her hind quarters to, 'Two perfectly rounded balls of milk chocolate'. That was poetry.
I do agree though, her voice sounded shrill at times. At its worse, it could be used to cut metal, if correctly harnessed. The transvestite backing boys were grotesque, as well as embarrassing. A lot of what Kylie does seems like a 'lite' version of Madonna's material of around five years ago. I can see the appeal, but it is not for me.
What do gay men see in her? Is it the kitzch element? She is so 'naff' that she has cult status? Bad is good? etc.

I have for a long time worshipped at the temple of La Minogue. I've been a fan since her early Stock Aitken and Waterman days, although that's not something I normally admit to. Her later stuff (post Confide in Me) has been good quality pop IMO, if such a thing does indeed exist.
Kylie herself was asked whether she had marketed herself to the gay audience;
She says, "A lot of record companies market directly towards 'the pink pound'. But I never did that. They kind of adopted me instead.
"Somebody once said to me, 'Gay icons, there's a lot of tragedy in their lives. But you don't really have that.' I said, 'I've had a lot of tragic hairdos and outfits. I think that makes up for it.'"
I don't know whether what she said is true or not; there is definately money to be made by targetting the pink pound. Cher deliberately targetted the gay audience when she released the Believe album. There wasn't a gay bar around in the late nineties you could escape her warblings!
Either way, I still love her. Must end now, I'm late for my flower arranging class.... ;)

Hi there, Tim. I continued watching the Kylie concert for a few more songs, one of which stands out: Kylie in a skin-tight see-through lace catsuit, writhing around on a gym vaulting horse. Not only did it confirm my pink pound sell-out theory (semi-clad muscle men mincing around in a gym? Strewth!) but also confirmed that she still has the best arse in the unverse. You are entirely correct when you compare her style to a watered down Madonna, though Kylie has taken the gay elements much further - can't recall Madonna wearng feathers and Carmen Miranda-type headwear.
Did you see the concert, Kristan? It was an over-the-top campathon from the opening bars to the end credits. It put an Erasure concert to shame. Perhaps it was a one-off to please the G.A.Y. crowd (even the title was camp: "Showgirl" - very Barbera Streisand).
