View Full Version : Should you take your car keys to bed?

Just read in tonight's Star that police are still advising people to take their car keys to bed with them. After the shooting in Bradfield I'd imagine taking your car keys to bed would be a pretty dangerous thing to do. If someone was after my car keys I'd rather they found them just inside the door rather than have to come into my bedroom looking for them.

What does anyone else think?

Nah, I would lose them in the sheets then have to spend hours looking for them the next day! I always lose my car keys no matter where I put them!

You're right, max - seems like strange advice to me. You should put them in a random place where someone wouldn't think to look, but if they were going to look, at least they wouldn't be looking in your bed!

I've got a Citroen C5, Diesal, Automatic - no-one has ever shown any interest in stealing it

That said, we don't leave our car keys in a visible location within the house.

When I get my super duper sports car I'll sleep with my keys under my pillow tho! :heyhey:

Never leave your keys in the doors.

I read somewhere someone only need to insert a thin pliers or something similar and turn the lock with your key intact from the other side.

Could be certain locks but it isn't worth the unnecessary risk.

I would say that the chances of someone coming into your bedroom for your car keys are slim. Burglars and thieves don't (generally) want confrontation.

However, opportunist thieves have tons of weird and wonderful ways of obtaining your keys through letterboxes, windows and doors. Hence the advice to take your keys to bed.

Thankfully, shootings in your own home - for your car keys - are relatively few and far between in Sheffield.

Is that whats known as a keysome?:hihi:

Any decent car thief doesn't need keys just a screwdriver (so I'm told)
I agree far too dangerous a place in bed

I only took mine to bed when my alarm was faulty.

They live in a drawer downstairs. I think taking them to bed is a mad idea. The Bradfield case demonstrates that confrontation is entirely possible, so I'd rather be able to redirect them downstairs if they got as far as the bedroom.

My friend had the unfortunate experience of watching an arm reaching through the broken glass of her front door when a door key was left in it.

The scum weren't to know the TT keys weren't attached to it :(

I always used to take my bag up to bed with me (containing my purse, mobile, house keys and now my car keys..) But as I now live in a studio apartment, there is no "upstairs" for me to take them lol! Come to think of it, I have a job on finding the keys, never mind a burglar... lol

Saying that, there must have been some very honest people around yesterday as divvy here locked her car with the keys still in the ignition lol :loopy:

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned how uncomfortable having keys in your bed might be... If you take the literal reading of the question posed lol

I always take my mobile to bed (fully charged) in case of fire, and I always leave my house keys in the same place so I know where they are in case I need to get out in an emergency, but never in the lock in case a spindly armed burglar puts his arm through the letterbox and lets himself in.

I had a pal in Sheffield that use to leave a handbag in plain sight in the kitchen with old credit cards, bit of cash, some change, an odd key, none of it was any good, she just thought the robbers would take off with it and not bother with the bedrooms.

Myself, ive never had to lock a door on my street and have left my keys in my car for over 30 years, had no problem, neither has anyone else in this area, robberies are the only thing i don't miss about Sheffield.

We had 'sneak' thieves come into our house when we were in and pinched stuff, so now we always lock the door behind us when we come in - usually end up locking visitors in too! But it's just automatic.

We put a huge gate at the side of our house to stop people coming round the back. We have a dog (ok so he might lick them to death) but it puts people off.

You can never be too careful. I don't like hiding my door keys and make sure they are easily accessible in case of fire. I always take my handbag upstairs with me and have my house phone and my mobile phone on my bedside cabinet.

I should be getting a walkie-talkie from the neighbourhood watch soon too (as i'm the first house on the development I can warn of any suspicious activities) LOL

Another thing - though some people think I am paranoid, I will not go to bed unless all knives and sharp objects are put away out of sight - don't want any burglar getting hold of them!

What they do to get into the house when the keys in the door is push them out with a pin so they fall to the floor, just next to letterbox/cat flap etc. and then get them that way and open the door from the outside. dodgy.

Knowing my luck, I'd break my keys or I'd press it and unlock the car for them! haha!

nah, I think its a bit over the top, mine just stay in my bag in my room but if they didn't, they'd be on the key hook downstairs - if anyone wanted to nick our keys they'd have an easy ride, all the keys can be found on th key rack in the kitchen! Which, when the curtains are open, can be seen from the window.

I'm not going to mention my address now!

I don't see what the fuss is about. Slobs like myself have been bringing the keys to the bedroom for years.

I leave the keys in the front pocket of my trousers. The next day I get dressed and then grab the keys, wallet, loose change and belt from yesterdays clothing.

(Sometimes, I even put the dirty clothing in the laundry basket. Usually limited to the wife's birthday, etc...)

That's my tactic :) I once left the passenger door of my Polo unlocked and didn't use it for a couple of days. When I went back to it, the door was ajar and the glove box was open; someone had a quick look around. The thing is, I keep nothing in my car (of value or otherwise) and have no stereo. There's nothing to steal, and the car is suitably underpowered and economical to make it a fairly boring theft proposition, so they left it!

My first husbands father would have left his wife in the garage, and took his car to bed with him, thats how much he thought of his car.

Lol I had my apartment keys on my lap (whilst I was still in the car) and I turned off the ignition (leaving the key in the thingy - which I have never done before) then I put on the steering lock and hopped out, apartment keys in my hand and popped the button down on the drivers side door to lock it... then I went to beep it with the alarm fob and realised i didnt have one... lol! There it was, still in the car!! :loopy: After several minutes of stomping/shouting and swearing, I admitted defeat and got on the bus for the first time in 2 months (eww) and went to fetch the spares from Mum's... lol!

THANK GOD no-one dodgy had walked by my car, as all they'd have to do would be to smash the window and the car would be theirs... Duh :loopy:

Mine won't let you push the button down unless the door is shut (so you're inside) to avoid this problem.

My alarm was playing up, and I couldn't figure out how to lock it without alarming it :(

At 5am I realised  lock doors and climb out of passenger door  Wish I'd thought of it sooner :suspect:

We were burgled and the little scumbag didn't take anything but the car keys. Luckily though my boyfriend's car wasn't stolen as I actually interrupted the burglar (not much fun for me, I woke up, went downstairs to make a drink and found a strange man in my house lol  ).

The police told us this is becoming more and more common, they said a big criminal gang are carrying out these sorts of crimes and they just pay the theives to come in and steal the keys. The reason thieves need the keys nowadays is because all cars are now fitted with microchips which mean they can't be started without the keys. Hence, if these gangs want the nice new cars they have to break into houses to get the keys.

I agree with you, that this type of crime is on the increase, but my point is that generally, burglars won't go out of their way to confront someone upstairs. They want to be in and out. The shooting at Bradfield was a rarety amongst burglaries.

I can never remember where I leave keys - car, house, office or any other kind. I'm sure any burglar would have the same difficulty in locating them as I do. Off to the forum meet shortly, but......where did I put my spectacles and wallet?

Its not really worth me taking my car keys to bed as it is an old car and not worth much. Plus I wouldn't like them to get stuck to the bedsheet.

Found the wallet - but still searching for the spectacles. (That's why I was wearing my prescription sunglasses at the forum meet tonight folks!). Now looking for my keys again - so I can lock up for the night!
