View Full Version : Children's TV when you were at School.
Okay, do you remember watching any of the following at school.. ( probably late 80's ish...)
Words and pictures with 'Wordy' the little yellow hovering football thing with bits sticking out all over him. I just remember him singing a song about Magic E's lol!!!!:o:)
The boy from space, Interference and the greatest of them all 'DARK TOWERS' These were like a series of programmes that had great spooky/weird storylines and we used to look forward to watching one or two episodes a week at school.
aaah the good old days  , no sex or violence, Just good old, plain craziness and getting the **** scared out of you.
Indeed.
I have the complete series of Dark Towers on DVD, bought it on eBay about 2 years ago, best thing ever! Although that Wordy thing is annoying to anyone over the age of 6!
BasilRathbon 10-09-2008, 14:02 Whn I was a kid Gary Glitter was a regular guest on shows such as "Cheggers Plays Pop" & "Fun Factory". Whatever happened to him?

Grr, Keith Chegwin was a talentless chav in the 80s! And he still is... As for Gary Glitter, he's a convicted kiddy fiddler.
Cheggars plays pop lol!.. top programme. Do you remember the one with two teams of schoolkids battling over film clips?.. something scene i think???
There was also 'beat the teacher' and 'Funhouse' :hihi::hihi: mmm them twins...
I wasn't allowed to watch alot of Tv, we didn't own one until I was 12 but when I visited my friends and families homes I would watch Play school , Jackanory , Blue Peter and News round. There was a tv program called White Horses and Peggy Miller productions , foreign Tv Doubed with English subtitles. There champion the wonder horse and Splasha.

I remember that little chipmonk on words and pictures, "el Nombre" lol.
FOUND A VIDEO! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnQP-wes9Dw&feature=related
Words and Pictures? Meh, I preferred You and Me, until they got the ultra annoying Cosmo and Dibs combo on it!
I spent most of my free time playing outside, TV wasn't more interesting than a BMX.
I remember champion the wonder horse!.. it had a really grainy picture didn't it.
Talking of those foreign films dubbed in English for kids though, do you remember 'Silas' and 'Black Beauty'?

Yeah... And there was some music program with songs that was on BBC2 around 1982, I fancied the female presenter on that, even though I was only about 6 at the time!

Thats a toughie!.. but if you put the two together, do you remember BMX Bandits?.. Nicole Kidmans first movie I think, so cheesy but at the time SO COOL!
weenireeni 10-09-2008, 14:35 I didn't watch much TV when i was younger either - but I remember Rainbow, Rosie and Jim and Playdays. Then when I got older it was Press Gang! Remember that?
Plain Talker 10-09-2008, 14:39 "White Horses", "Belle and Sebastian", "Heidi" were trotted out regularly for our delectation lol.
I loved the cartoon "interludes" in "The Banana Splits", such as "Arabian Nights" with the donkey who used to go barmy if his tail was pulled (and the other live action show, with the Tarzan-y fella, "Oh-oh, Jungo!")

Play Days was a pants "follow up" to Play School IMO.
Play School rocked! I always wanted to see what was behind the square window!
Er, ahem.. *gets coat*

Camberwick Green, please!! :D (I did like all the "Trumptonshire" programmes as a child anyway, Trumpton, Chigley, and Camberwick Green. so you can imagine how I blissed out, when I saw the mickey-take Life-On-Mars series two episode-opener)
Yes I remember "The Pogles", and "The Pogles of Pogle Wood" and Ivor the Engine, as well as Noggin the Nog.
What about Mary, Mungo and Midge? (and Joe's Café, produced by the same people)
I have the Complete Clangers, and the complete Bagpuss on video, too.
I liked Clarence, the cross-eyed lion from Daktari, and can still sing the theme song from the Double deckers (But fret ye not:- I shan't! hehe)
P "is it Gene Hunt? Is he kicking in a nonce?" T

Raccoons was annoying, especially that pink thing!
I also hated that Kissyfur cartoon, how sickeningly soppy can cartoons get?!
I remember Wordy! I used to like watching Grange Hill (in the Zammo & Rolaaaand days).
I also used to watch a quest show. Can't remember the name, was it Dungeons and Dragons? Where the child contestants had to guide a friend through a VR world by telling them where to walk, how fast, when to jump etc. The friends would watch on a monitor. I was young enough at the time to think what they were seeing was real rather than graphic! Didn't realise till later it was special effects and the kid was just in a plain room.
I remember watching Newsround, the Smurfs, Fraggle Rock, Rentaghost and many more. I used to love cartoons like Tom and Jerry too.
I even remember watching in black and white (not because I'm THAT old but because my parents were misers who wouldn't pay the colour license)!
Don't remember Wordy but I do remember Jigsaw, what a peculiar show that was. And Vision On that was the forerunner of Take Hart (I loved Morph!).
I loved all those Oliver Postgate animations - Bagpuss, Noggin the Nog, Ivor The Engine, The Clangers  And Mr Ben! And Rhubarb & Custard, Paddington and the Wombles. The Muppet Show too. And Pipkins!
Best of all was Rentaghost though, it was uber-cool. Closely followed by Grange Hill.

That VR show was Knightmare... And it bloody rocked! I so wanted to go on it, but being unpopular at School meant I couldn't muster a team, and there would've been major arguments about who'd get to be the one who went in the "Dungeon".
Then of course there was crackerjack lol very sad they had a game where you got cabbages

Was Crackerjack the one with the Krankies? "Ooh I could crush a Grape"
Plain Talker 10-09-2008, 21:09 Was Crackerjack the one with the Krankies? "Ooh I could crush a Grape"
The Krankies didn't do "I could crush a grape":- that was Stu Francis's catchphrase, along with "I could rip a tissue!" and "I could jump off a doll's house!"
the game with cabbages was "Double or drop", (for some reason, I thought it was called cabbages and kings! hehe)

Oh! So I didn't imagine it then! Nobody else ever seems to have heard of it.
Rocklegend 11-09-2008, 16:10 Kizzy (the gypsy girl) and The Changes...
I used to love Jossies Giants, Red hand Gang, Ulysses, Johnny Briggs. My ultimate fave though was The Littlest Hobo. The theme tune used to bring a tear to my eye.

Johnny Briggs. That brings back memories. I'd forgotten that one, it was a favourite of mine.
Yeah that rocked! As did Ulysses 31, I have the complete series of that on DVD boxset.
Now if only they'd bring out all 8 series' of Knightmare on a DVD boxset, or even each individual series on DVD.

Tucker Jenkins was Todd Carty. Went on to play Mark Fowler in Eastenders.
A different role altogether, much like Mick Foleys transition from Mankind to Dude Love.
I went and bought the complete digitally re-mastered series of 'The Mysterious Cities of Gold' from HMV a few weeks ago and am still making my way through it.... aaaaah the memories.
Children of the sun, see your time has just begun, searching for your ways through adventures every day - aaaah aaaah someday we will find, the cities of gold!!:headbang::banana:
