Hi, i once did a few photographs for a local postcard company, and have been wondering what people's favourite views are? This spring weather and nicer light makes me want to get my cameras out again...Any suggestions?

the view from the top of meersbrook park is pretty good. I was up there at dawn today on the way home from a nite clubbing and the view was gorgeous - really clear and bright and you can see for miles..

I'll second that suggestion! - the view from up near Bishop's House in Meersbrook Park looking across towards the City Centre does indeed take some beating!

I'm one of the luckiest people in Sheffield, our house overlooks almost the same view as meersbrook Park, I never tire of looking at it,when I'm washing up, a look over the hills of Dore and over to Fox house takes some beating,it's also good to fetch my washing in as I can see the weather coming over, but the sunsets are spectacular

a really nice view is from the top of the hills above the reservoir at Lodge Moor. Not only can you face one direction and see a huge chunk of the city, but face the other and your view is pine trees and hills with the clouds reflected on the surface of the reservoir beneath you. Sparkling on a good day and dramatic on a stormy day, its a stunning view alright. Go a bit further along to Stanage pole and Stanage Edge - its like standing on the edge of the world, lol.

I agree with the Meersbrook park view for an urban view, but for a more mixed view I really like the one you get in graves Park as you look left walking up the main path from the sports chaning rooms towards the Rose Garden Cafe. You can see right across Beachief and out over the hills beyond Totley and there is a church spire that really catches the sun beautifully on a sunny morning. I often stand looking at this view and think about how luck I am to live in such a beautiful city

I agree re Meersbrook Park - I was born and bred locally and agree this is an awesome urban viewpoint.

For a slightly more green view I recomend going to the shops at the top of Twentywell Lane, Bradway and taking the footpath on the left before the road goes downhill. Once onto the footie pitch behind the Bradway Hotel (you can also get onto the pitch by the side of the Hotel) walk through the gap in the trees. Up to the top of the next grass field to the bench on the skyline.

Sit and enjoy! :)

Meersbrook Park is such a great view that includes BDTBL and the tower blocks and the old tax office but for a view of the city centre i love sitting staring out of the window at the top of all saints school. you can see right across from BDTBL to the hallamshire in the distance to the town hall and hell, it beats french! also from the top of western park hospital, staright across the city centre.

Whilst not a panoramic viewpoint I can suggest one that would take some beating for a major city. And that's Fred Tudor's Bench. Looking from amidst ancient woods full of bluebells, across a herd of deer in front of Beauchief Hall and beyond is breathtaking at any time of the year. Approachable off Beauchief Lane or Twentywell Lane.

Jawbone Hill is pretty good. I've got a few books which rave on about it, but I think Meersbrook Park is one of the best.

Stanedge Pole above Redmires is also pretty terriffic, as mentioned by Sheffette. On a clear day you can see the power stations in Lincolnshire (Cottam?)

next to stocksbridge and Deepcar golf club are some big hills and at the top of them you can see all south yorkshire forest.
on a clear day the view is awsome.

Also ive only been once to this and dont know exactly what its called but its at the very top of end of hillsborough golf club, just passed it actually, its some sort of common and when you stand there you can see for miles.

my other favourite view is the very top right hand side of rivelin valley, where the private houses are and theres a cottage there , higher up from the old chapel.
you can see the entire rivelin valley area and more from there.

can anyone help me with the correct names for these places.

Views of the city centre from Norfolk Heritage Park.

Views of the city centre and rolling moors of the Peak District from the top of Daresbury area in Arbourthorne, and from the Kenninghall area of Norfolk Park (especially in August, when the moors are purple with heather, or anytime snow is lying on the ground).

Views from above Grenoside Woods across vast swathes of South Yorkshire.

But you can't beat Meersbrook Park for that marvellous panoramic view across the city and the distant hills. The view from just below the Bishop's House is simply fantastic!

The view from where Shirecliffe College used to be is amazing. It is now a housing estate, Standish Way but leading onto Parkwood Springs on a clear day you can see for miles. If you did take some photographs for postcards you should let us know, I would be really interested in buying some!

From the top of Barnsley Road, opposite Crabtree Pond, looking down over Fir Vale. On a sunny day Fir Vale looks like a wonderful village in the valley with the church spire in the centre & the green hill of Wincobank rising in the background.

It is a great view from the top of Kenninghall Road on Norfolk Park. You get a real panoramic eyeful of the city.
I too feel very lucky to live where there are so may tree's and all the greenery in Sheffield in general and on Gleadless Valley.

I sort of specialised in night shots, but i supplied all sorts of things for them.

I love the view from my bedroom window in Crookes. I live in an attic room right at the top of all the hills, and on a clear day can see for 30 miles right over Sheffield. Can't wait for summer to get my camera out and take pictures!

Not Sheffield, but close enough I would say.

My favourite local view is from the bottom of Bamford, looking up at the village with Bamford Edge in the background - about an hour before sunset as the sun comes across Winhill and makes the edge look stunning.

I know it sounds perverse but I like the view over the east end from Wincobank.
With so many hills, we are lucky to have thousands of stunning views.
I used to live on Quarry lane at Brincliffe, again a stunning view over the city, especially at night.

there's the viewing spot on Fulwood Lane up at the top of Porter Clough which ill be cycling past tonight. Great view from the west side of the city and I've been told you can see both the Humber bridge and Lincoln Cathedral from up there but that could be a wind up.

Edited to say its been discussed before, I should have searched first...

It's not a wind up, Ian.

Lincoln Cathedral is visible from Hallam Head (and Hallam School) and the very top of Humber Bridge is also visible but it depends on the light and conditions in order to locate them.

My favourite view is Redmires as someone else mentioned above. From Stanage Poll looking over Redmires reservoirs toward the city. It's so peaceful, the air so fresh and yet you're fifteen minutes away from the city centre.

The light changes, the wind can be a howlin' gale or gentle breeze. Different colours in different seasons, the heather and bracken and the skies which can be moody and brooding or crystal clear.

The shooting lodge makes me think of Wuthering Heights and the terrain is almost identical: stunted firs and gnarly trees. Long grass blowing in the wind changing into different shades of colour and when it's wet, the sound of gushing or trickling water.

Heaven is a place on earth.

1. Sky Edge and the Cholera Monument - nice panoramic views of Sheffield.

2. Millhouses Park from Abbeydale Road - the slope behind it with the trees gives it a glorious green depth.

3. Bits of the City Centre - Peace Gardens, the front of the train station. (the Winter Garden is beautiful, but always seems to look a bit strange in photographs).

4. Ecclesall Woods - magnificent.

5. Beauchief Abbey - little bit of history there.

6. Castle Market - it may not be conventionally pretty, but there's a lot to see there and photograph and it's a quintessentially "Sheffield" thing. Ditto with all the old industrial buildings in the City Centre and Attercliffe. Sexy and attractive in a sort of gritty individual historical way.

I used to live in a victorian house near the psalter lane uni campus. From my room on a clear day I could see over the top of the city centre, past meadowhall and the cooling towers and even into the centre of Rotherham, - it was absolutely incredible, especially when the sun was setting and everything lit up perfectly. I think that shot used to be used by Hallam Uni in its promotional material.

the view from the top of meersbrook park is pretty good. I was up there at dawn today on the way home from a nite clubbing and the view was gorgeous - really clear and bright and you can see for miles..

Yes it's ace up there. I once sat there with my ex just as the dark was coming in, identifying areas all over Sheffield by the formation of lights and roads.

I also like the view at the corner at the top of Bradfield where you can see over the damns.

Hi, i once did a few photographs for a local postcard company, and have been wondering what people's favourite views are? This spring weather and nicer light makes me want to get my cameras out again...Any suggestions?

From the west end of the Riggs looking west to Win hill and beyond.
