My faithful laptop of 3/4 years seems to have gone to laptop heaven, it shorted out for the last time methinks and now it won't turn on at all.

For a while now it's been overheating and turning off and, like an idiot, I have failed to back up everything on my hard drive (some music, and a few old documents from my uni days) and ideally I'd like to be able to retrieve them.

Do you reckon it be possible, say if I took it to a computer shop, for them to be able to get access to my hard drive some how and retrieve my documents/files? Or even better, could anyone here do it?

I take it that this would involve me taking apart my laptop and taking out the hard drive?

yes but usually laptop hard disks are located on the left side and only held in place by one screw. you should see a screwed flap about 3" wide.

If you get stuck or cant be arsed then I can have a go for a smallish fee. Or no fee if it's totally shagged!

Just tried it one last time and strangely enough it's switched on.

Will back up absolutely everything now and then I think I might be shopping for a new laptop.

Thanks anyway guys, if it messes up whilst I'm backing up then I might be getting back to you though!

CLean the fans! Turn it upside down, take the panel off that looks like the fans are underneath it and clean them. Also where the air comes out, clean the gills, blast it with air duster, it's probably just overheating.
