View Full Version : Can't sing? Can't Dance? You'll go a long way!
Ousetunes 07-05-2005, 09:05 So, you admit you can't dance. You can't sing either, but it doesn't stop you getting up on the karaoke after a few Babychams and making a complete fool of yo'self.
In your own secret way though, you reckon you're not really that bad. Passable even. Now, imagine getting paid loads of money for your bland, nondescript, drippy, soulless cover versions of songs like Do You Wanna Dance? and some other Shakin' Stevens type numbers.
Add a queue of a few thousand sixty-somethings who'll even stop out all night to buy tickets to see your show. You can't sing, you know it, but you're a millionaire non-the-less!
How, you ask, can I do this? Can I REALLY be a millionaire singing poo poo bad versions of other people's songs, infront of sell out audiences everywhere I go?!
Yes you can!
How else would the boring, M.O.R., karaoke wannabe that is Daniel O'Donnell manage it?
cobaltblue 07-05-2005, 13:20 I have never understood his popularity. I find him talentless, mind-numblingly ordinary and boring in fact. He isn't goodlooking nor even possess the kind of personality or charisma that draws you like a magnet despite his somewhat ordinariness. Yet he has legions of fans that seem to be bewitched by him. :loopy: It's scarey, he seems almost like a pied piper of the over 50's , he is a siren for the blue rinse brigade that they cannot resist (well some anyway, my grandmother seems immune). I once worked with a woman (mid 40s) whose desk was adorned with Daniel pics - in fact he is so ordinary looking I assumed it was her son, as son that she doted on given the number of pics, I was freeked when it eventually dawned on me who it was!!! :wow:
Hmmm, what is the secret of his success?? Is he in cahoots with the Dark Lord of the Underworld? Has he sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for the adoration and loyalty of legions of blue rinsers?? And why does he appear to never age?? Does his attic hold a "Dorien Gray/ Daniel O'Donnel" portrait??

His talent is probably in his ordinariness. In fact, he might be described as extraordinarily ordinary. His appeal lies in the fact that he has a pleasant (if unremarkable) voice, a soft irish accent, an engaging manner with his audience, a pleasant (if unremarkable) face, a warm smile and sings pleasant unchallenging songs in a way many people of a certain generation find appealing. His audiences don't want 'message' songs and they don't want music as art. He's not my cup of tea, but I certainly don't begrudge the blue rinse fraternity their harmless two hours of pleasure.
I honestly know nothing at all about this ordinary man who is bland and a bit sugary-----but , to me he sounds like the Tony Blair of Song.

I don't begrudge them either Lord Chaverly. I just find it somewhat bemusing. I have no doubt my lust for say Brad Pitt or Benicio Del Toro would be met with similar bemusement from the blue rinse brigade :D

Also, if as you say he is a Dorian Grey, you will probably be one of his blue rinsed fans at some point in the future (horrible thought, I agree!).
