Hi there,

I've just started in dressmaking and would like to know which fabric chop you recommand. I'm initially looking at cheap fabrics to train to make dresses, skirts and tunics. Cheap but wearable because I just don't want to throw my work away.
Any ideas of such a shop? And also, where to buy the sewing furniture like cissors, needles, threads?
I live in S4 area.
Thanks for your help.

fine fabrics on hillsborough road is a treasure trove of affordable fabric and great advice always on offer from the staff.

they have a massive selection of dress fabrics, including a sale room with som every impressive reductions.

they also have a large haberdashery section with threads, needles, and loads of choises of buttons etc.

best of luck,

x

Thanks a lot sophiec... I'll go there have a look at what they have.
I'm really excited at starting sewing, as it will be great to be able to create my own clothes, and I'd like in the future to be able to sew for others as well (as a housewife and mom to babies, it's ideal to have an income from home)...

graces fabrics in castle markets is also worth a look although they dont have a particularly big range.

coles brothers have some lovely fabrics, but unfortunately, they have lovely prices to match!!! but the ladies on the sewing machine section are really helpful so if you need any advice re: patterns/sewing etc they are great.

i forgot to say that fine fabrics also sell patterns, but cole brothers has by far a much larger selection to chose from.

hope these extra bits help,

x

Have you tried Dunelm Mill Shop at Heely? Its behind the big Machine Mart shop at the junction where Queens Road meets London Road. They have quite a lot of Fabrics & Haberdashery's & most of the time when Ive been in they have a lot of Fabrics reduced.

Fine Fabrics at Hillsborogh is a really nice shop too, I go there often.

Best of luck
