Everytime i walk down West Street on a night out i've noticed that everyone steers clear of Bar Max, anyone know why?? For a bar in it's position on West Street with a late license it should be heaving ... anyone out there like it??

We've actually had a couple of group bookings there & I have to say they have been brilliant. It's a good size venue, with a late licence & they're very accomodating. But like you I've always got the impression (despite the fact they've been drefurbished recently) they're one to be avoided & I don't know why.

Not the greatest bar - there is nothing special that stands out about it - they don't have great music, no interesting beers, no special atmosphere... and gives the impression of being a bit rough - last time I was in there someone tried to pick a fight with my friend for no reason!

Looking at the title of the thread I wouldn't say I hated Bar Max. However there is nothing special about it that makes me want to go there, I am also wary of about people trying to pick fights with my friends in there previously.

It's only a few minutes longer walk to the much better Sharkeys Bar.

I went there last weekend and loved the fact that it was quiet! The staff were friendly and for me, it had a mediterranean feel to it...the only thing that was horrid was the toilets (as explained in the Walkabout thred!).

Maybe because it's painted Salmon Pink!

Dead right - ghastly colour scheme. When they were repainting it I thought that was the undercoat at first! Sadly not. Looked much better all green or all red. It's also a really bad name - I can never remember what it's called and I always say something like, 'you know, that one next to Tesco that opens late'. Then I think 'Max's Kansas City' though I know that's not it either.

I've only been in for late drinks - it served a purpose for that (and when it's dark you can't see the colour scheme). But there's more choice in that dept now so maybe they need another refurb. Or just turn the lights down and have candles. I like its unpretentiousness which is a rarity on West St these days so I hope they sort it. Bring back the Mailcoach, Beehive etc.

AndyC - does Sharkeys have real ale or loads of foreign bottled ales or summat? If not, why would you recommend I go there? Nothing against it, just curious why you mentioned it.

Sadly no real ale, they do have some foreign bottled beers though, I tend to drink the Fruli in there - Belgian fruit beer.

Where I end up at night tends to be dictated by the mates I'm with, but out of the limited choice of late bars in Sheffield that tends to be the winner as whilst it does get busy it's not uncomfortably crowded, and has a fairly relaxed feel about it.
