View Full Version : Boycott Walkabout. robbie 06-05-2005, 23:08 They now have a man in the toilets. Boycott and get rid of this slave labour. Its unsettling and insulting. jayjay 06-05-2005, 23:58 Is this man selling aftershave and hairspray ala Josies circa late 80's early 90's:hihi: Or was he there for more nefarious reasons?:suspect: JoeP 07-05-2005, 06:18 This happens a lot in London - I'm not a big fan of it. All I want in a pub toilet is an unblocked urinal, a toilet that flushes and a means of washing AND drying my hands. I do not wish to smell like I've just walked through the perfume department of Debenhams on the day when all the perfume bottles were destroyed by a mysterious glass eating virus. :) Is he there to prevent people abusing the facilities? Joe Cutglass 07-05-2005, 07:45 Hey Joe, at least you wash your hands after you've used the loo, I know a few people that don't bother yuk :gag: tslogf74 07-05-2005, 08:45 Personally, I tend not to wash my hands unless I've weed on them. They just end up manky off the taps and door handles anyway :) Anyway, I'm definately not a fan of people in the toilet, and you should boycott the walkabout, because it's not very good. Ousetunes 07-05-2005, 08:54 ...c'mon, it's not as if you need an excuse to avoid the place, is it? Are there assistants in the Sheilas' loos too? I though in Australia they drunk their p155 anyway. (If not, then what on earth is XXXX and Fosters made from?) Andy C 07-05-2005, 11:52 Ah, the old toilet attendent debate again.... I am personally hate them - I am capable of washing my own hands thankyou, I'm an adult. And it becomes more insulting when they have attendants washing hands and offering smellies (for a fee) when the facilities are knee deep in wee, the dumper cubicles are un-usable and the hand-dryer doesn't work - surely the attendant would be better served cleaning them instead of your hands! However I don't mind the ones in the style of the old Josie's where he had a little shop in the corner of the gents, out of the way, and not hassling you. These are rare though. robbie 07-05-2005, 12:40 it wouldn't mind as much if it were a huge toilet but its small enough as it is. The attendant is just doing smellies. I thought the only reason that they have attedndants in Ozzie toliets was to stop fights;) D2J 07-05-2005, 12:53 Originally posted by robbie They now have a man in the toilets. Boycott and get rid of this slave labour. Its unsettling and insulting. Why is it slave labour ? It's seem to be a trend amongst bars nowadays.. 50p for a splash of Joop and a lolly ain't too cheap in my book but then again I'm very tight with the finances these days :hihi: Snakey_B 07-05-2005, 13:07 I HATE the toliet attendants ,it really ****** me off but i suppose they are there to make a few bucks but also check that peeps aint doing a nasty habit if you know what im on about Hubert 07-05-2005, 13:12 very annoying usually dont wash my hands when they ar in the loos simply because i dont want to be hassled, the ones in walkabout relocate to leadmill after, they are soooo annoying Ow-Zone 07-05-2005, 14:34 there's one in corporation on a sat night now too.... smellies and lollies etc... ironic given the shocking state of the toilets in there. MrMarcus 07-05-2005, 15:25 Freshen up man!!!! There anoying and have got everywhere. Hels 07-05-2005, 18:41 If they are there on the same basis as in the Ladies (though not seen any in Sheffield yet) they buy their own products and use them in order to make money from tips. I suppose an establishement such as Walkabout can see the benefit in having a presence in the loo's at all times to help stop people making a mess etc. But I don't think they will be employed by Walkabout. They are more likely to have to pay walkabout to be there. They are obviously just trying to make some money/a living? Cake 07-05-2005, 18:46 There was one in Banus last time I went in - she charge 50p for a stick of Juicy Fruit!!!!! Barmy! lazyfish 08-05-2005, 10:22 I've read about this whole toilet attendant thing on here before but I can't get me head round it at all. Never seen it anywhere. I guess you get it in 'trendier' places than I go to. It just seems utterly, utterly bizarre to me. So yeah, I'll boycott Walkabout... no change there then... :) mr.blaze 08-05-2005, 14:28 It's not just here it's The Forum, Bar Matrix and there is definately a few others in town. Hate it  Liose 08-05-2005, 14:50 I think that all nightclub toilets should have attendants/cleaners in them. I went into town last saturday and couldn't believe the state of some of the pub toilets. I had to wait in one place (think it was Bar Max on West Street - late bar) - and go to another place - the toilets were like out of an old disused tube station. Walkabout is pretty good in comparison. If these people shame you into washing your hands then thank god for that! As for the quote - I only wash my hands if I pee on them....ERRRRRRhhhhhh...I hope you are not serving my drinks! green 08-05-2005, 16:41 everyone is missing the point here...... why do u think bars & clubs have started using these attendants???? quite simply because there is a minority of individuals who get a kick out of blocking toilets, kicking hand dryers off walls, writing graffiti on walls, and keying mirrors !!!! and it doesnt matter how good your crowd is, there is always one ****** up individual who thinks its funny!!! so instead of moaning about toilet attendants, next time you see someone who feels its funny to push a bottle down a toilet for a laugh, and then pull the toilet chain till it overflows, maybe if you advised the bar staff so the individual can be escorted out of the building and then toilet attendants wouldnt be such an necessary as they are at present! Andy C 08-05-2005, 19:22 Yes but the toilet attendants don't get involved in maintaining standards - many are in a disgusting state still - they just charge you to hand you soap and towel when you wash your hands. If anything they are a risk to hygiene, as many people who normally wash their hands now don't, so they don't have to play the whole dodge the attendant game. Deavon 08-05-2005, 23:44 You should never find yourself having to fork out for soap or dryers when using pub toilets. If these items are not freely available then contact Environmental Health (and after a spell of tummy trouble, a good claims lawyer!) I have never worked in a bar with attendants in the loos but I understand that they are usually considered as security in bars that have experienced endless vandalism. They tend to have 'props' such as aftershave but they are there to maintain control over these rooms that are closed from view during trading times. Before you launch a full 'boycott' of Walkabout, perhaps you should consider that they are doing this as a 'last resort' measure against vandals, drug takers, and violent individuals? Greenback 09-05-2005, 09:03 Is vandalism of toilets really so widespread that virtually every bar in Sheffield needs the "freshen up" guys to keep things in order? It has the unpleasant stench of legalised begging to me, and it's not something I'm comfortable being confronted with on a night out. DanSumption 09-05-2005, 09:36 I'm not very keen on attendants, but having seen vandalised toilets in pretty much every town-centre pub/club I've ever been in then I'm sure it's a good idea - and they're not there to clean up after the vandalism, they're there to put people off doing it in the first place (and also drug taking and anything else other than take a leak). I have been to a couple of very posh restaurants in London where having a toilet attendant actually makes you feel quite special. And in Germany, every toilet has an attendant and, from what I can gather, you're expected to tip. Somebody told me that this is "to pay for the upkeep of the toilet", but when you go into a shop and are expected to pay for the upkeep of that shop's toilet, and yet somehow they manage to pay for the upkeep of the rest of the shop without resorting to begging, it does stink a bit. (They do have very nice toilets in Germany though) SilentStatic 09-05-2005, 09:57 I don't know about other places, but in Corp they have attendants but the toilets they're in are still the most disgusting I've ever seen. And why would we pay for attendants when we've already paid to get into a club? BertieBasset 10-05-2005, 07:43 I understood that the bloke in Banus (formerly Josephines) actually pays a rent to the club (£1000 per year) to stand in the bogs flogging his aftershaves, presumably the other clubs and bars are renting out their toilet spaces too...... :Gag: What I find revolting, as well as blokes permanently residing in the bogs is that just think of all the urine that's air borne that they will have inhaled over the course of an evening from residing in the bogs.....ugghhhh :gag: Macca 11-05-2005, 13:41 I was in Brussels with work earlier this year. We went to a bar in the grand plas, where they had a little old lady sat on a stool outside the doors to the ladies and gents toilets. I noticed her on the way in and thought "that's a funny place to sit" Luckily for me I left the toilet behind somebody who is used to the fact that little old ladies sit outside toilets in Belgium, and he tipped her. I followed suit for fear of being abused in Flemmish - but I still don't understand her purpose....:suspect: Don_Kiddick 12-05-2005, 01:38 I remember 2 very famous Chinese toilet attendants from my childhood... Oolet Wang:D and Ooflung Dung :D Help - I'm turning into Viking! :hihi: Andy C 12-05-2005, 10:52 In Holland even pokey little bars have toilet attendants who you are expected to tip. However the difference over there is firstly that is accepted as the norm and there is a little bit of a cultural difference, however the attendant doesn't pounce on you and wash your hands for you or try and sell you stuff, instead they keep the facilities clean and ensure the cubicle is stocked with toilet paper. The rest of the time they sit by the door collecting tips. cruella 12-05-2005, 11:12 Excuse my ignorence on this matter...perhaps i should get out more often but...How the hell can someone "wash your hands for you"....im having visions of standing with mother behind you... ..do they grab your hands and thrust them in the sink?... ..Im sure a polite " No thanks" would do. muddycoffee 12-05-2005, 11:43 I have been to Germany Holland and Belgium too, in the last couple of years and there certainly were not toilet attendants at every toilet. Like some posters have said. I have been into bars stations and clubs. The best systems to my mind is where you pay a penny to enter the facility. Rather than give a tip when you leave. It's really funny though when you are in a foreign loo at the urinal, and there is a little old lady with a grizzled face at the next one getting a gleaming shine on it with a cloth, with her vigorous polishing. I find it disgusting when blokes spit chewing gum into urinals, where do they suppose it goes? Some boor sod has to unpick it from inside the drain hole yeuch! DanSumption 12-05-2005, 13:17 Originally posted by muddycoffee I have been to Germany Holland and Belgium too, in the last couple of years and there certainly were not toilet attendants at every toilet. I don't remember seeing any attendants in the toilets in Belgium (I've spent a lot of time in Antwerp, and also been to Gent), but during the 10 days I spent in Germany there were attendants in every single toilet, and driving back through Holland there was even one outside the petrol station toilet on the motorway, although I don't remember encountering any on various trips to Amsterdam. |
