Hi,
I've got a dual core athlon 64 bit processor running the standard Vista home premium and want to upgrade to 64 bit Vista.
Does anyone know how much the upgrade from Microsoft costs?
Thanks
I could be wrong, but I thought the licence covered both 32 and 64 bit versions? But you can't upgrade from one to the other - it's a clean reinstall from scratch (all data on the disk lost)?
I believe that is correct, you do not need a seperate x64bit license, just an x64bit install DVD
take at look here.. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932795
look at heading "Installing a 64-bit version of Windows Vista on computer that is running a 32-bit version of Windows Vista" look at Method 2, part 2.

Retail versions come with both 32 and 64 bit versions. OEM don't.
Are you sure you want to upgrade to 64bit? You might find it's more of a headache as you need new drivers, some of your software won't work... the usual.
Admittedly being able to use oodles of RAM appeals, but then a lot of my software won't really use it to any great degree.

Many thanks all - food for thought
Do you have any particular reason you need to upgrade to 64 bit?
If not, then you really don't.

you really only need 64bit if your planning on going more than 4gb of memory.
the downside to 64bit is most if not all PC thing makers don't support 64bit OS's leaving you with hardware that don't work or don't work well.
for example nvidia has released a set of new motherboard driver this week in 32bit only XP/Vista , this leaves people like me on 64bit a bit left out.
Also things like my Canon DSLR camera isn't 64bit compatible, Apple IPOD software isn't 100% stable amongst a lot of things i use daily.
I don't have a problem with my iPod on x64

I don't have a problem with my iPod on x64
it's itunes and the update application , keeps downloading updates and things but can never install them. I get the message 'Unsupported operating system' and the update closes.
I managed to find a working copy of itunes but sometimes it don't load the track lists sometimes it does ? I have 3 Ipods 2 normal and 1 shuffle and all seem to have same issues, so could well be software issues rather than hardware.

Hmm, I have only used it with one of the new iPod Classic (80GB), not tried with shuffle or older ipod, will have a play later.

Thanks again - I'm really scared now - it's 32 bit for me and no mistake!
