Apparantly I have a choice between these two, well, I did at my MW appt. last Monday and chose Jessops as that is where I had my daughter, but a few people have said Calow is better for a few reasons and also not far from here as I am near the Chesterfield Bypass.

I have already seen a MW at Jessops and had a scan there so not sure how easy it might be to change but just wondered your opinions?

I would recomend Calow too, even though I had my baby 3 years ago at Jessops, staff were lovely, but parking a pain, anywhere near Hallamshire etc.

Tom Farrell was FANTASTIC though, he delivered my son, very good. so lots to think about for you.

our first child was born at the old Jessops - our second at the new Jessops. The experiences were different. We were well looked after on the first occasion and were happy with the service. On the second occasion it wasn't so good. Nothing wrong with the staff but they were so short-staffed that it was chaotic.

We've also heard only positive reports about Calow - maybe if we were having another child we'd give it a try in preference to Jessops. This is purely hypothetical though now as I am a Jaffa.

If i were you i would avoid Calow like the plauge they are very lucky that the legal system is such a farse in this country or i would have been consulting my solicitor after the heartache they have caused.

Jessops is 10 times the place Calow is.

I had mine at the old Jessops, I have been to the new, the car parking is terrible. I would be admitted with pre-eclampsia on every visit for the stress that causes. When I first moved to Sheffield babies could be born at the NGH and at Nether Edge. Now we only have one maternity unit and although very good and babies born in south yorkshire often end up there for some reason. I dont think its as good as it needs to be considering the migrant population and number of births in city etc. I would probably choose Calow if I felt I did not need specialist services of a teaching hospital, after all you can probably change your mind even if they say you can't. As you get older you get more confident at getting your way! My friend had a baby in the SCUBU at Calow but was discharged herself after a few days. I don't know how I would have coped visiting the Jessops everyday from the S8 area transport to the hospitals is not great. She always managed to park at Calow. Not that I have negative feelings about either place, its just the transport that would have a big impact, but then I have had two quick births, so I would need to get anywhere very quickly.

I've had a good and bad experience at Jessops, but have never been to Calow. However I'll echo everyones sentiments regarding parking! You arent even guaranteed parking at the hallamshire multi storey - twice I went to park there and it was closed?

I guess everyone will have good and bad experiences of any hospital you care to mention. However, I would say that in our experience the staff and facilities at the Chesterfield Royal was very good. Parking can also be bad at Chesterfield at times though (same as any hospital I guess!).

I have heard good and bad stories about both of these places. I had my baby at Jessops and I don't have any major complaints. There are things that niggle me but I think this would be the same anywhere. I bet there will be good and bad stories about all hospitals. The circumstances of each birth are different and I think when you have picked for definite you should just not listen to people's stories.

I had my first baby in the old jessops 12 years ago. I then had babies 2, 3, 4 & 5 :help: in Calow. Number 4 & 5 were only 14 months and 14 weeks ago, so both fairly recently. I am also near the bypass and found it much easier to get to, and to park - never had a problem, and i was there every 2 weeks due to diabetes. IF i ever have number 6, I would go back to Calow. I had a scan in the early pregnancy unit at the hallamshire with number 4, and they said they would book me into Jessops. I just said I'd rather go to Calow, and they were fine with that. Hope that helps :)
