Hi, can anyone help me? I'm doing my family tree and i'm getting a bit stuck. My Grandad was called Cliff Congreve & he died about 1964 (before I was born). I've found out a bit of information & think the family lived in Brightside Bierlow. So if anyone knows anything about any Congreves all info will be appreciated.
Thanks
Vanessa A (nee Congreve)

Just phoned my brother because he used to play darts for the Wicker Brewery( the old Hole in the wall)with a chap called Cliff Congreve who lived in Brightside.Could it be the son of you grandfather or a close relative?Anyhow by all accounts he was a very good dart thrower & he knocked about with another good dart thrower called Dave Beach or Beech. My brother said this was in the 1990s but I think it could have been a little earlier.

1960
Joseh Congreve 138 Elm Lane 5
Roy Congreve 213a Cemetery Rd. 11
These were the only 2
There were about 8 in 1939, mainly widows. I'm not sure where Brightside Bierlow was, but I imagine Elm lane was in Ecclesfield, Cemetery road in
Hallam
Mrs Mary Congreve was at 46 Boyland St Sheff 3 in '39 that could have been Brightside Bierlow

This could have been my Dad, Geoff Congreve who was a great darts player. Cliff married Nellie Harpham and he had brother's called Richard, Thomas and James, as well as two sisters, Edna & Kathleen (according to my shaky research)

Hi Vanessa.

George E Congreave married hannah Blagg in Worksop in June of 1913. They had 6 children (all born in Sheffield).

Richard E. born March 1915, Thomas C. born June 1918, Edna. born June 1921, Clifford, born Dec 1922, kathleen S, born Dec 1924 and James D born March 1928.

I have all of the birth certificate reference numbers if you want them, any of them will tell you where they were living at the time of each birth.

Will do a little more digging when I have some time to find marriages and see if there are any branches of the tree you could contact.

Hi Vanessa - looking in the deaths index, this is likely to be your grandad's entry:

Oct-Dec 1964: Clifford Congreve, died aged 42 in the Chesterfield district, Volume 3A, Page 113.

You could obtain a death certificate on-line from the General Register Office, see http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/order_certificates/index.asp#0

George E Congreave married hannah Blagg in Worksop in June of 1913.

This would seem to be George in the 1901 census, living at 36 Houghton Street, Brightside Bierlow:

George E. Congreve, an "errand boy" aged 13. Parents Charles Congreve, age 42, mechanic's labourer, and Lucy M. Congreve, age 37. George had a younger sister Violet A. Congreve, age 11. On the census return the spelling has been altered from Congreave to Congreve.

The births index confirms that George Edward Congreve was born in Sheffield in April-June 1887 (Vol. 9c Page 523).

As Congreve isn't a common name it might not be too difficult to trace the direct ancestry back for two or three more generations. In fact I looked up Charles Congreve in the 1861 census - his parents were Edward and Ann Congreve, living at 41 Bramber Street. Edward was a "pot maker" (for crucible steel).

Vanessa

Don't know if its linked or not, but my Great Grandfather Frank Shaw Barker married a lady called Frances Congreve in 1931, they lived in Attercliffe / Darnall on Surrey Road. I know that Frances had been married before to Francis L (possibly Lawrence) Congreve and her maiden name was Franks. Frances and Francis had at least one son, also named Francis but I don't know much more about the family I'm afraid other than the info concerning burials which has come to light hilst I have been researching my own family tree.

Hello Vanessa,

So nice to find your email, better late than never ! We are related.
I have sent you a private email, please write to me off list. Thanks.

The dart player is nothing to do with your grandad, he died long before
that time.

Dick/Richard who started the first "Pet Taxi" service in Sheffield is
also our relative. Sadly he died a few years ago.

I have a family link to Annis Congreve (1880-1915) from Sheffield. She was, I think, daughter of James (1844) and Mary Eliza (nee Cockayne). Next generation is Thomas (1809) and Ann. Not sure if these link to the other Congreves mentioned or not.
