View Full Version : England fans hate Setanta CorkerSWFC 06-09-2008, 19:25 All the England fans have been singing all way through this match is we hate setanta. Thingything 07-09-2008, 00:10 Not bloody suprised,is ridiculous that the national team playing the nations game is broadcast on a poxy pay per view channel, didnt even have highlights on terestrial telly What a bag of crap CorkerSWFC 07-09-2008, 00:15 I thought i was hearing things at first but yes it was definately that. happyhippy 07-09-2008, 00:29 Am I the only one that sees the irony in an Irish broadcaster having the rights to England away games, yet our match was on Five, and broadcast for free in the UK? I didn't know, so listened to the match v Georgia on RTE R1 on long wave whilst cooking people food, when all along I could have put some crap in the oven while I watched the match and had a drink. At least they ate all their liver, onions and mash, with a couple of vegetables. I still missed watching the bloody match though. Bladesman 07-09-2008, 03:44 That was the best bit of the whole match really. happyhippy 07-09-2008, 05:05 That was the best bit of the whole match really. What? Their liver and onions? craigmason 07-09-2008, 06:54 totally agree national team games should only be shown on the main channels so that all fans have a chance to watch the games Heyesey 07-09-2008, 11:44 totally agree national team games should only be shown on the main channels so that all fans have a chance to watch the games And we have a law saying that they will. Unfortunately, we're not in a position to pass laws about who Andorra sell their matches to. scottishdude 07-09-2008, 13:30 I know everyone can't get Virgin but if you can It's excellent value for money. You don't need a BT landline as Telewest landline is via cable. If you pay a set price on your landline you get unlimited calls 24/7 for the month (doesn't include mobiles and overseas). Internet conection is better as it is through cable. If you have the XL TV package, which is not expensive in the phone/tv/internet package, you get Setanta for free. Setanta has loads of different sports plus you get Liverpool, Arsenal, Celtic & Rangers channels. You get Racing and golf as well. You can also get V Box which can store 80 hours of recordings and record 2 programs while watching a 3rd. I don't bother with Sky Sports (through choice) or Movies and have enough sport and entertainment plus uninterrupted internet for a very reasonable cost, and I will be juggling between Scotland and England games on Wed night, I might even catch the Russia v Wales game earlier but will probably record it. Just a thought but nobody seems to mind not seeing all the CL games on ITV or aren't people bothered about paying over the top prices for Sky Sports? Yes ive got the xl package with virgin media, 2 meg broadband, free evenings and weekends, free setanta and all footy channels and racing all for 30 quid a month. daftlad 07-09-2008, 17:26 Not bloody suprised,is ridiculous that the national team playing the nations game is broadcast on a poxy pay per view channel, didnt even have highlights on terestrial telly What a bag of crap The way England are playing lately I bet there are quite a few people glad they cant see what a poor side we have got:hihi::thumbsup:: CorkerSWFC 07-09-2008, 17:58 I don't fancy us even getting a draw on wednesday me, Beckham looks like playing and i just can't see us beating Croatia atall, i hope im wrong like. bernthefirs 07-09-2008, 18:01 If you subscribe to Sky Sports, most people don't want to have to (or can afford to)subscribe to Setanta as well. Not many pubs have Setanta either as they can't afford it, so people can't watch the England matches. At least previously there were highlights on the bbc or itv. The net result of all this will be that the general public loose interest in International football and that can't be a good thing. CorkerSWFC 07-09-2008, 18:05 There are ways of watching Every match ever televised on the internet, and its free. bernthefirs 07-09-2008, 18:08 There are ways of watching Every match ever televised on the internet, and its free. ...and are you going to share this valuable info? CorkerSWFC 07-09-2008, 18:24 You've exceeded your storage space, pal. Can you pm it to me? Yes no probs give me a min. Heyesey 07-09-2008, 20:01 If you subscribe to Sky Sports, most people don't want to have to (or can afford to)subscribe to Setanta as well. Not many pubs have Setanta either as they can't afford it, so people can't watch the England matches. Why not make the same argument in reverse, have Setanta so that people can watch the England team, and no afford Sky so that people don't get to watch the Premiership games? More to the point, since Setanta is a tenner a month and Sky is anything up to nearly forty quid, it's a bit rich to claim you afford the latter but not the former. CorkerSWFC 07-09-2008, 20:03 It does look these days that its 40 quid plus to be able to watch the football properly, thats before you have even thought about the wife lol. flamingjimmy 08-09-2008, 09:36 The other thing about setanta is that the coverage is entirely lame, the team they've got are idiots, match of the day rejects. EDIT: even sky and channel 5 are better!! Ousetunes 08-09-2008, 10:26 I applaud any station and/or broadcaster which manages to make it difficult for Joe Public to suffer yet another 90 minute dirge of a performance from what is called the England Football Team. Can we not interest Setanta in taking Eastenders? not wanted 08-09-2008, 17:49 I know everyone can't get Virgin but if you can It's excellent value for money. I must be on a different virgin service to you as mine is crap Fivetide 10-09-2008, 18:59 HANG ON! I could just about live with the Andorra highlights not being on terrestrial.. But the Croatia game's not either? NOOOOOOOO!!! Not even HIGHLIGHTS (if there are any in the game).. What do I do?! HELP! Is it the fault of the BBC or ITV or is it Sultana? I'm gonna have to get Setanta if this carries on! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! . . . . . Can we not interest Setanta in taking Eastenders? lol - I wish. craigmason 11-09-2008, 07:02 A cracking game last night england won 4-1 but the majority of england fans did not have a chance to see it. Setanta must not be allowed to bid on england games in the future the only channels who should be allowed to show these game is one of the 5 main channels :rant: Heyesey 11-09-2008, 08:15 A cracking game last night england won 4-1 but the majority of england fans did not have a chance to see it. CorkerSWFC 11-09-2008, 08:17 Capellos interview was funny last night he only spoke for about 40 seconds then ended the interview himself lol. BasilRathbon 11-09-2008, 10:14 Dion;t blame Setanta, blame the BBC for not bidding for the TV rights. Instead of showing the national team playing the national sport they chose instead to blow their sports budget on minority sports like motor racing and golf. CorkerSWFC 11-09-2008, 13:42 Dion;t blame Setanta, blame the BBC for not bidding for the TV rights. Instead of showing the national team playing the national sport they chose instead to blow their sports budget on minority sports like motor racing and golf. True some of the sport they show on mainstream television these days is enough to make you squirm. Heyesey 11-09-2008, 19:44 Dion;t blame Setanta, blame the BBC for not bidding for the TV rights. They did bid, apparently; just not anywhere near the amount that Setanta were willing to accept. The figure I hear bandied about is £250,000. davep 11-09-2008, 21:59 I don't want to upset anyone, but, it would appear that Setanta have signed up EVERY England away game for this qualifying group of the World Cup. CorkerSWFC 11-09-2008, 22:21 The highlights are on itv now???? Heyesey 11-09-2008, 22:26 The highlights are on itv now???? indeed; apparently they started at 10.35. ITV report their capture of highlights. (http://www.itv.com/Sport/Football/News/Holdingstory/EnglandonITV/default.html) What they paid, it doesn't say. Whether they'll pay the same again for future away matches, it also doesn't say, but I suspect so given the furore over this one. I'm also not sure how many people will have found out in time to watch them, given that (A) the story dind't break until after 5pm, and (B) I very much doubt the BBC has reported it ;) CorkerSWFC 11-09-2008, 22:34 I must say one more thing on this point, doesn't it look like there using the calendar studio lol CorkerSWFC 11-09-2008, 22:36 Well done itv The Manager 11-09-2008, 23:25 There are ways of watching Every match ever televised on the internet, and its free. well give me the link as well then m8:thumbsup: not wanted 12-09-2008, 02:27 It's funny for me as I'm not from this country and don't support england and I get benefits and I get to see the game for free. Funny olde game. happyhippy 12-09-2008, 02:37 It's funny for me as I'm not from this country and don't support england and I get benefits and I get to see the game for free. Funny olde game. As I said before, it's ironic that it's an Irish broadcaster! BasilRathbon 12-09-2008, 10:26 indeed; apparently they started at 10.35. ITV report their capture of highlights. I'm also not sure how many people will have found out in time to watch them, given that (A) the story dind't break until after 5pm, and (B) I very much doubt the BBC has reported it ;) Yes, I only saw it by accident. As ever though, ITV's coverage was, while better than nothing, pathetic. Not content with commercial breaks at half and full time, they now have a commercial break midway through each half as well. As for the commentary - I've never heard anything to biased! Everytime a Croatia player made a tackle the commentator deemed it a sending off, every time an England player fouled they said they'd been unfairly penalised. Pity they couldn't show it live though - could have turned the sound down and puit 5 live on instead. CorkerSWFC 12-09-2008, 12:30 The setanta commentary was funny, Chris Waddle about 20 seconds before first goal said, Walcotts not having as much impression on this game as the other day, how wrong he was. Heyesey 12-09-2008, 13:02 Not content with commercial breaks at half and full time, they now have a commercial break midway through each half as well. I won't argue the coverage being pathetic - it usually is. I suspect, though, that the number of advert breaks they had to show was already fixed, since they'd have sold those advert slots when they still thought they were showing some crappy sitcom or other; they were probably tied to still showing them when crappy sitcom got replaced by football. On that call, we'd better reserve judgment till they have a planned showing of highlights. telman 16-09-2008, 13:12 blame the moneygrabbers at the F.A. they sold the game. craigmason 16-09-2008, 14:01 As i understand it the government will include england matches in it's listed sporting events that mean guaranteed free-to-air coverage of some sort abbasinho 16-09-2008, 15:56 As much as i'd like the England games on the free-to-air channels I just can't see it happening. The FA have got to make back all the money they wasted on Wembley somehow! I read a few months back in When Saturday Comes that the BBC were so keen on getting Lewis Hamilton on their channels that they didn't even consider bidding for the Champions League or the England games. They went all out to get Formula One, and forgot that more people are actually interested in football. I know what i'd rather watch. Hopefully what the above post says is true though. Setanta is an awful channel aswell. fred_notdead 16-09-2008, 17:50 Last weeks England match was live on the internet on Shanghai TV, pity about the commmentary though hehe Heyesey 19-09-2008, 15:37 blame the moneygrabbers at the F.A. they sold the game. No they didn't. The FA does not own the television rights to matches in Croatia. The Croatian FA owns those. Heyesey 19-09-2008, 17:50 As i understand it the government will include england matches in it's listed sporting events that mean guaranteed free-to-air coverage of some sort It already does, and they already are. Croatia matches, on the other hand, not only are not covered by that legislation but are completely immune from English law anyway, because they don't take place here. The Croatian FA can sell the rights to whoever they damn well please, or even to nobody if they decide they don't want England fans to be able to watch. Heyesey 19-09-2008, 17:51 ITV to show highlights of Setanta's remaining away games. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/7624365.stm) I'm curious to know how much ITV have paid, and whether it's more or less than the offers which Setanta refused to accept in the first place. Somehow I doubt we'll ever find out, though. |
