I heard on the news that carers (as in a family member looking after disabled loved one) were going to be given more money for looking after them?

I only heard half of the report (think it was on bbc news) so does anybody know if this is this correct?

well considering JSA at about £56 is only about a tenner or so more than the carer's allowance anyway (at £44 ?) I don't think the government are being that bountiful.

If you look at the millions and billions of pounds that carers save the government, I think they deserve a damn sight more!

I agree Plain Talker, i dont think we would ever get a wage type sum but a couple of grand a year more would be nice as it's a full time job 24/7.

How much would a pro carer get for working them hours?

a lot :(
whilst us non pro carers get treated like scum for living off benefits because....guess what....we can't work as we're CARING 24 /7, and can't afford any help.
Ah well, we'll all get our own back when we cost the government a fortune in anti depressants or a stint in a mental hospital due to our nervous breakdowns...
*gets off soapbox*

I don't know, a carer's salary isn't that much above minimum wage.

however it's all a saving, isn't it when the loved ones have to get stuck in to the nitty-gritty of looking after an infirm relative.

I just dislike the current system, i feel that it benifits the ones who dont need it more then the ones who do!

I don't even know what minimum payment is these days, is it £5.70? So, £5.70 X 24, X7......its a lot more than what we get lol. Plus they get health and safety training, insurance blah blah blah. I can't even get a moving and handling course, and had to beg for physio for my back, which lasted 6 weeks. Then back to square one.
I'm not moaning about being a carer, not at all, obviously first and foremost I'm a mummy and caring for my own son is just an extension of that. However I would like to feel valued in the role by other people, and not made to feel like 'council house / benefits scrounger scum'. Doctors and other professionals seem to take it for granted that its your life and just what you've always dreamed of doing, never mind that a persons ambitions are pushed aside and they risk being isolated in their own home, because its easier for the government to tell people they can have the honour of being carers and hand them a little sum that can be quite insulting, then moan about them draining the system and that they should all go out and get jobs.
I'm going to stop moaning now, I blame the weather lol

i think someone worked it out that if we did the 35 hours a week for carers allowance it worked out about £1.40ph. as we know the vast majority do more hours a week than that

i also hate being labelled a sponger by joe public, always feel the need to explain exactly why im on benifits and not back in my job when maternity finished

That would be far too logical for the NHS, and some sort of notice if they cancel an appointment!
