Was just wondering if we have anyone on here who shows their cats, or just goes to cat shows in general?

I haven't shown cats but I did go to the Cat SHow at Doncaster race course a few years ago, it was really interesting, the Maine Coons were absolutely huge!

Im a cat breeder, small time, and believe me there are a lot of very odd people in the world of cats and cat showing. Some lovely people yes but lots of people you wouldnt want to spend a whole day with.

hi used to show my cats can be a great hobby long days you have to travel get your cat vetted caged ready for the judges round about 9to 10am you then have to leave youre cat for aprox 2hrs whilst cats are examined by judges and rated then you are allowed back to cat public are allowed in to look at the cats so you must remain with your cat caged till about 5pm it has your cat got the temperament for showing and most of all is it a good example of the breed standard if so have ago and goodluck

I don't show but as you probably recall, we've 4 purebred cats (Bengal, Oriental Havana, Maine Coon and Norwegian Forest Cat), a rescue bengal (no papers), rescue norwegian (no papers) and a young norwegian, Arnie (result of accidental mating between my pedigree and the rescue before he got the snip) plus a moggie. All feature in 'Alfie's Blog'.

We have been going to the annual Supreme Cat Show at the NEC for the past 4-5 years as visitors/members of the public, and love to see the cats, chat to owners and breeders and stock up on bargains. We did briefly consider showing (and again when we got our doberman Ailsa) but couldnt bear the idea of travelling up n down the country and hanging around a show ring when we would rather be out walking our dobermutt or spending time with our mad felines. it's a great way of finding out about a specific breed though, and of making contact with potential breeders with sound stock.

The Supreme this year is either end Nov or early December, but I think it's like Crufts and you've got to quallify to get there.

I kinda feel like that too...although obviously we wouldnt be walking your dobermutt lol

and if you've ever seen her on the way to the park in a morning, you'd know exactly how much of a challenge it can be- bouncy on 2 legs is an understatement!

Showing (dogs, cats, rabbits or whatever) brings a lot of joy to owners and breeders - my brother and his wife were well-known and well thought of in the irish wolfhound field - they showed, bred, worked and judged for many years. Ailsa the dobermutt might well have made a go of it going on her pedigree alone, but she wouldn't have had the temperament for it, all the same.

For cats, it must be even more of an ordeal - they don't get to exercise or do anything other than hang around in a crate for hours and occasionally get prodded and poked by strangers and the oriental breeds can find it really stressful - whilst other breeds take it in their stride. If there was such a thing as feline agility in this country, I reckon Alfie the barmy bengal would love to give THAT a go.

I think pet showing, particularly dogs and cats, is a bit off. Brings joy to owners and breeders, but all done without the choice of the animal.

In the US, there is agility of sorts- Orientals and Bengals seem to excel at it but obviously not as predictably reliable as dogs. For breeds that are naturally bursting with energy and house cats, it must be a tremendous exilerating experience
