Try spamming Esc on startup. What happens when you press f1?

IN the BIOS is the CDrom set above the hard drive in the boot order?

google the laptop model number - find out which button you need to press to enter the bios

I thought that if you were reinstalling windows you want it to boot from the cd rom first.Put the cd in the drive and it should run windows. Then after its installed it will boot from the hard drive, once you have removed the installation disc.

Doesn't a new hard drive need to be partitioned and formatted before it can be used?

I normally use Fdisk but Windows XP setup can do the job.

As Cenobite says you need the Windows cd in the drive. Or are you getting the F1 and F12 options with the Windows cd in the drive?

try f12 for boot option screenscreen
try f2 or f11 or delete key for bios setup
if that fails it could be a bios problem or stuck key

does the laptop have a multi bay , if yes then simply remove the cd rom and place back in once loaded.

But is this what you want ?

Is it the case that you want to install windows but the lappy isn't booting off the CD thus not installing anything ?

the bios is out due to some reason or another , so that will not let you select ?

I was told to do something along the lines of this ... remove the HDD as the machine boots and with the windows disk inserted, this will then force the machine to boot from something so will start from the CD. While this is pratting about very very quickly place the HDD back in ( i usually have it out just past the pins) . This usually works and once the blue install screen pops on the HDD will start to load.

sounds simple but have you removed disc from drive and seen if it boots hdd instead
itll still need disc for finishing loadup but you can put that in when requested
ps no anyone got a cheap 15 volt toshiba protege charger or willing to swap for ibm think bits? ta ken

Some laptops also use F2 to get into bios.
