See. If you can do it, why couldn't our paid-for officers?

Thank you very much.

It wasn't there yesterday when everybody was complaining that there wasn't a list on the Council's website! It looks like they pre-empted by complaining at them and put it up on their own initiative. :)

Thanks for the link.

Edit: And I've just checked it, and they are all PDF documents. A plain text list is easier to read online for more people.

It wasn't there at lunch-time.
Well spotted foo.

Does anyone know why some of us have had to go to a different polling station? I assumed the Heeley Bank one wasn't being used any longer when I had to go to Hartley Street, but I passed it earlier and it was open. It's only a minute away, but Hartley Street isn't, and though I didn't mind the walk down, it'd be a real hike back up the hill again. That doesn't make sense - or is it a sneaky way to get us postal voting? :loopy:

For all of you who helped me find my local place, well i went along and they said as i had voted in the local postal vote, then this counted for the national one too!

So many people said otherwise!

Just go's to show that the whole affair isnt made very clear in my opinion.

Thanks for eveyone who helped though.

Im waiting excitedly now to see who wins!

Heeley Bank Community Rooms, was used as a polling station for polling district AF which is within the Arbourthorne ward. It includes the odd numbers on Heeley Bank Road.

Unfortunately, the electoral services office at the Town Hall decided that the polling district in which Mathom (and myself) both live, should use Hartley Street in Heeley! This is because we live in Gleadless Valley ward. Our polling district includes Olive Grove Road, Slate Street, even numbers on Heeley Bank Road, all of Myrtle Road below the junction with Heeley Bank Road, Richards Road, etc.

This was madness! When I discovered this change in traditional polling station, I complained to the electoral services office - but as they were in the process of printing election material, it was too late to change anything before the election. I then delivered a letter to as many addresses as possible on behalf of Meg Munn MP, which explained the change in polling station, and enclosed a postal vote application form, if desired.

There were similar changes in polling stations across Sheffield. These have arisen following the ward boundary changes which came into effect last year. Yesterday I met Mr John Tomlinson at the electoral services office at the Town Hall, in an attempt to avoid a repeat of this problem. He has agreed to review the location of polling stations, and has asked for any problems to be notified to him, preferably with suggestions for alternative, and more convenient, locations.

I am writing with my own suggestions, which includes a return to using Heeley Bank Community Rooms for the polling district in which Mathom, and myself, reside.

The list is excellent; my only qualm is about knowing which of the individual areas one lives in...

How does one know, for instance (especially if the polling card didn't arrive:- I never recieved a polling card, with my information on) that they are in "arbourthorne e", "arbourthorne w", or "hurlfield?" or whichever.

especially if one is a newcomer to a district...

my old flat, in arbourthorne would have been almost equidistant from each polling station... holy family church, the arbourthorne centre *and* the manor library,

also, why would someone have to travel all the way from skye edge, almost to manor top, to edenhall road for a polling station? surely, for sky edge it would be easier to have a polling station at the sky edge community rooms, or at St john's school at Park?

You raise some excellent points Plain Talker. I happen to know the polling districts in Arbourthorne ward because I have a copy of the list of street names from the electoral services office in the Town Hall (as an Arbourthorne ward councillor, I am entitled to a copy free of charge).

I have requested a list of polling stations that were used in the recent general election within the Arbourthorne ward (and, also for the polling district in which I live within Gleadless Valley ward), and will be making suggestions for different, but more convenient polling stations - in time for next years local elections.

Excellent! I'm glad someone else noticed this change. I am thinking of complaining to the council about this myself. I am so close to the Heeley bank polling station I could almost have folded my ballot into a paper aeroplane and thrown it there, yet I had a good 15 minute walk to Hartley St instead. I can imagine the walk back up the hill again would put a lot of people off.

It doesn't make any sense how the polling stations were allocated as Heeley Bank must be right on the edge of a district - one of the houses subject to the change is literally overshadowed by the building. If it's to do with it being in a different ward, then why can't there be two separate boxes in the one polling station for the two different wards? It didn't stop me from voting as little would, but it would have stopped quite a few from doing so.

I had one of the postal voting letters, and if I had not had this I would never even have picked up my polling card and noticed the change! So I owe you my thanks, redrobbo!

Thank you Mathom.

If my efforts assisted you to vote, then the pleasure is mine.

I shall be processing my complaints and suggestions to the electoral services office at the Town Hall on Friday. I feel reasonably confident that next time you will be able to vote at Heeley Bank Commuity Rooms, and not have the ridiculous trek over to Hartley Street.

We had similar problems over at Hillsborough. Eveybody from Winn Gardens all the way down to Rudyard had to use Hillsborough School. They used to use Winn Gardens Comminuty Centre and Proctor Place church as well in the past.

Last year Election Services admitted that various bits were strange because we've got new wards but old constituencies. They said that eveything would be reviewed once the new constituencies are announced. F'rinantace, Rudyard would normally vote at St. John's with Walkley Lane, and Winn Gardens might be better going to Marcliffe School.

There's tension between the Election Office who understandably want to minimise the number of polling stations and local councillors and other representatives who want to maximise them ;)

I heard on the radio a couple of weeks ago that the Review is expected to be completed and laid before Parliament next Spring.

When councillors do deliberate this, do you think you could steer them towards some kind of policy statement with regard to the maximum distance one should be expected to walk to a polling station?

I accept that this could only be applied to the main urban wards. it would be a bit difficult to apply the same standards to the more rural areas.

My Dad is a caretaker of a school which used to be a polling station up to (i think) last year. Despite living next to the school, he has always had walk 15 mins down the road to vote instead of the 1 minute walk to the school!

This year he said he had to queue ages to vote because of some polling stations were merged in his area. He also still had people coming to the school to try and vote!

Headteachers, school governors and election staff are trying to minimise the number of schools used as polling stations.
