I would have any of those. In this order 1-Sony 2-Toshiba 3-Dell
Savannah2 03-09-2008, 17:39 Out of those 3 I would go for in this order: Toshiba, Sony and lastly Dell.
Just curious, why have you only considered these 3 manufactures?
My choice would be HP. :)
prescottspie 03-09-2008, 18:01 I have to say, I have a collection of aged Toshiba laptops, the newest of which is over 12 years old.
They all still work perfectly.
In terms of their more modern models, I believe Tosh won an award recently for laptop reliability.
However, if you want a media centre, go with a Sony Vaio, they are point-and-click media laptops mainly, and if you want to feel like your behind does after a VERY strong curry (if you get my drift), go with a Dell. Your wallet will feel the pain.
Tosh or sony. HP if you're on a budget.
If you want a new tosh give me a pm :heyhey:

Hi Savannah,
Its just that these 3 have been recommended. I currentley have a packard bell and an acer.
But dont fancy either of these again
LAPTOPREPAIR 03-09-2008, 18:14 Hello,
As a laptop repair company, and from a repairers point of view, a Tosh is by far the best as far as aftercare and customer services is concerned. Don't get me wrong a Tosh doesnt break down any less than other brands, but when it does you can usually get it fixed very quickly and quite cheap. With a Sony, they would not supply us with certain parts, in which case you have to send it off to Sony and they charge incredible prices. We recommend Toshiba to anyone who asks.

I must agree with you, jonny142. I wouldn't touch an Acer and definitely not a Packard Bell.
I would definitely add to the choice of 3 laptops by including HP ... unless you know otherwise. :)
Savannah2 03-09-2008, 18:19 HP if you're on a budget.
HP ... budget? :suspect: Even Sony and Toshiba have a budget range of laptops, as do most other computer manufacturers. ;)
I'd set a budget first and look at specs/manufacturers from there. Also factor in any accessories you might want - additional mains adaptor, second battery, decent case etc - they soon add up

Hp's are cheap these days sav. Cheapest hp you're looking at is around £180. Cheapest tosh abot £370 I think.
My budget is around £5/600

Bloody hell!! My HP wasn't. :) Is the £180 an on-line price? Cheapest one I have seen are around £270 (ish)

I would recommend a Toshiba they have always been trouble free for me.

alkatraz 04-09-2008, 15:58 Speaking purely professionally having to buy laptops for business use, I HEAVILY and SERIOUSLY suggest that you stay away from Sony.. the business dept. couldn't even sell me one (because they were too busy apparantly) and when I finally got one for a VIP in the business, it's a pile of crap.
I have no Toshiba experience.
However, I must sound a note of dischord with the other posters: a Dell laptop is a fine choice. I appreciate that they can be troublesome from a customer service point of view, but purely speaking in terms of the products themselves I am *very* happy with them and that's why the business runs off Latitude laptops where laptops are used.
They are fantastically modular, the parts are well tested for interoperability and generally Linux runs like a dream on all the hardware with little to no manipulation.
If I were to be spending £500-£1500 of my own personal money buying a new laptop right now I guarantee I would be buying a Dell.
Thanks guys, Toshiba looks like the way to go for me.
If Sony's laptops are anything like their games consoles, they break within 6 months of purchase.

If you want one don't forget to pm me, I may be able to save you a bit of money.
Antics^^ 06-09-2008, 23:44 I have lots of Sony products and also have a 2 year old Vaio. It cost me just short of a grand, the battery failed after 3 months (not covered in the guarantee as it's a consumable, roughly £200 cost). Next keys started falling off sporadically followed by the touch pad not working well. The final straw happened when the power connection in the laptop became loose and will no longer charge the laptop (thank god for the docking station!).
It's a love/hate relationship with my Vaio, it's the Alpha Romeo of the laptop world.
I know you've already decided on a Toshiba but just wanted to put my 2p worth. Toshiba's are very well built and really reliable. I've had two and both were still going strong when I got rid of them each time. You can drop a toshiba (even stomp on it) and it will still be perfect.
The only problem I had with my last Toshiba was overheating (which could be fixed by vacuuming the fan vents).
If you want one don't forget to pm me, I may be able to save you a bit of money.
Thanks Dave,
But my company will buy it for me.
Cheers for the offer
Jonny
