Alan Green and the diminishing quality of BBC radios sport coverage

View Full Version : The "I hate Alan Green" megathread. not wanted 31-08-2008, 17:42 Alan Green and the diminishing quality of BBC radios sport coverage plekhanov 31-08-2008, 19:08 12. Mark Lawrenson... Why single him out? If anything he's slightly less annoying with the rest of the sickeningly smug MoTD crowd. Alan Green is the single worst thing about football at the moment, he seems to spend half his time moaning about what a chore it is to commentate on football iirc this afternoon he said something about 'having better things to do than watch this' or similar, in which case I wish he'd **** off and go do them and leave the commentating to someone who'll stick do describing what's going on on the field . not wanted 01-09-2008, 07:00 Why single him out? Thank you, I thought I was going to be on my own with the Alan Green slagging as he has just turned in to a deeply unpleasant caricature of what he once was and it has gone beyond a joke but Radio 5's football coverage is pretty much a joke these days and how the hell any media organisation can employ Steve Claridge is one of the great mysteries of the 21st century. Whatif wewin 01-09-2008, 09:29 Alan Green surely has to be the worst football commentator. He talks how bad players are and what they should have done, 'why on earth did he not pass to such and such, its beyond me' It is beyond me how he has kept his job. Does no one at the BBC listen to him, and realise how bad he is? happyhippy 02-09-2008, 01:08 The above posts from a different thread convinced me that there needed to be a place to vent our collective spleens about the tripe that this 'commentator' speaks. Once upon a time, I actually thought he was OK; passionate in his delivery, and fair in opinion. Now, I'm convinced he only believes in the existence of 'proper matches' if they include at least one of "The Big (spit) Four(TM)". I remember getting home from the Lane a couple of years ago after the Blackburn match (I can't remember why I wasn't in the pub) to hear his incredibly well thought out insight into the game at the start of the show. "..... and Sheffield United and Blackburn bored each other to death 0-0 at Bramall Lane .....". Now, maybe, just maybe, I was at a different match, or I was asleep and had a wild dream, or was using several mind-altering substances but as I recall, there were three missed penalties, and a sending off, just for starters. I listen to Five Live less and less now for various reasons, but I really can't bear to listen to him now. I used to give it a few minutes to see if he'd reverted to his previous style; now I just retune to another station. Goon 02-09-2008, 06:34 A few years ago, Alan Green made some rather dubious comments about Joe Royle when he was City's manager. The Manchester Evening News approached Joe about them and his statement was: "If Alan Green threw himself a birthday party and invited all his friends, he could hold it in a telephone box and still have room for gatecrashers." Alan Green never replied to that one. plekhanov 02-09-2008, 13:07 He's such a bitter, bitter man his comments about most matches are so relentlessly negative that I generally turn the radio over shortly after he comes on (incidentally does anybody know why 5-Live use several different sets of commentators for a single game?). Little Buzz 02-09-2008, 13:10 Sometimes he's funny, but Stuart Hall always is - he should commentate on every game as far as I am concerned. Corn2 02-09-2008, 17:04 Can't say that I 'hate' him, but there's got to be much, much better commentators out there. I remember one of his comments during an England game where he described Englands performance as 'excruciating' .. a rather apt phrase for him to use as it's a bit like his commentary! not wanted 14-09-2008, 18:01 One bright spark in the sea of tedium that Radio 5 has turned into> Danny Baker is back doing 606 on Tuesdays. Dworflord 15-09-2008, 21:18 Fantastic - other people who can't stand Alan Green's commentary either. I usually count how many seconds it takes him to make a disparaging remark and I rarely reach ten! On a separate note I'm staging a Cahrity Football Quiz on 3rd October at Smithy Wood Working Mens Club if anyone fancies an Alan Green free evening. happyhippy 15-09-2008, 22:54 Fantastic - other people who can't stand Alan Green's commentary either. Oh, you are not alone, and welcome! abbasinho 18-09-2008, 12:12 Alan Green and Mark Lawrenson should hang for crimes against football. Everybody else is OK, for now.... i'm looking at you Tylesley. happyhippy 24-12-2008, 23:16 Alan Green was voted second in "The most ludicrous Briton" awards in the Independent on Sunday, published at the weekend. Forgot to mention it before. Here it is. (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/a-horrible-whos-who-most-ludicrous-briton-poll--your-verdict-1206398.html) Not the greatest turnout, admittedly. ChrisTodd 28-12-2008, 11:40 The problem with a lot of commentators, not just football, is that they don't commentate on the action anymore. They always want us to listen to their views and opinions. I thought the BBC in particular was supposed to be impartial? |
