Hi all, this is the first time I have posted on this section. Last night I received some old junior school reports and felt really bad whilst reading them.

The reason ?, my old headmaster saw I had musical talent and taught me as much as he could. He allowed some of us to stay in at lunch time and practice and I would play anything I could lay my hands on. I played 3 different recorders, I know some don't think of this as a proper instrument but it taught me to read music. I tried piano, flute, clarinet, anything really. I felt really guilty last night because after a bad experience at an electric guitar lesson, I have not played anything at all and all of the knowledge that the lovely headmaster gave me and all the faith he had in me has been wasted.

I miss music and have often thought about taking up an instrument again however I no longer know how to read music and have no idea where to start. I am now a wife and mum so time is at a premium. I would like to play saxophone (I think). Can anyone give me any advice about how to get started without having to spend loads of money on something I may not be very good at any more ?

I wonder what my old headmaster would say if he knew I had given up completely.

Thanks all.

You'd be surprised how quickly you'll pick up "reading music" again!!!

I played recorder and violin as a child, gave it up when I was about 14 and O levels were looming and I couldn't continue with Music as a subject as it clashed with others I needed to do.

A couple of years ago, I suddenly decided to learn the piano, after not doing any music for nearly 30 years!!

I'm roughly at grade 3 and can read bass clef as easily as treble now!!!

Go for it - what do you have to lose??!!!! :hihi:

(Equally, how much do you have to gain???!!!!) :hihi:

Hi there.
Why not pick up the guitar again. I could give you some free lessons and show you how to very quickly read tab and then you can practice and learn to your hearts content taking lessons when you need them. I have a few guitars so there is no need to spend on one until you decide whether or not to get into it properly.
PM me if you are interested. I am S20.

I would love to play Saxophone again, My trade in the Army was Musician/Bandsman, I attended 'Knellar Hall' the 'Royal Miltary School Of Music'
On leaving tha army I couldn't afford a saxophone so I reverted To Bass Guitar (my original instrument).
Live your dream and have a go.
