I've been offered an allotment at the Manor, behind the Travellers and I was hoping that someone on here has a plot there already and can tell me a bit about the site.

I'm very excited and will be pumping you all for tips and info as I progress with this plot.
Please any info at all will be great.

I also have been offered one of these, and funnily enough was about to start an identical post! I was hopign for one in heeley (arent we all!) but am a little impatient so was considering taking one on the Manor, but i have no idea where it is, can anyone tell me a street name near it or what bus would get there? also, whats it like for rats, vandalism etc?
and is there a community type hut where i can hire tools like in the heeley allotment?

thanks!

Yes we are all wanting a Heeley one:hihi:.

But impatient beggers can't be choosers. Good questions, I'm far too excited to think of practicalities at the moment.

A tip for getting your own tools is to try freecycle:thumbsup:

pkay, so in an attempt to help myself i have tried to find the travellers rest pub, since the manor allotments are supposed to be near there...but according to google its in arbourthorne ? near gleedless road, is this the right place?

Yes, you can do this. I'm pretty sure there is no clear rule about the number of plots you can have. Not sure which sites in Heeley you're looking at but the waiting list for Heeley and District site (end of Meersbrook Rd) has a waiting list of 120. The expected waiting time is about a year (the office is doing more frequent inspections and trying harder to remove tenants who don't work their plot).

Ah, finally got an answer from the not to friendly man in the council office...
manor allotments are just by city road :-( but he said i could expect to wait 5-6 YEARS for a heeley allotment! seriously?!? and suggested i put my name on the meersbrooke list instead as it would be ONLY a 12-18 months wait

well, fingers crossed the manor ones are nice lol

Look forward to seeing you up there, keep your eyes peeled for a pink haired woman, swearing at her spade:hihi:

I just handed in my acceptance slip. I should get a tenancy agreement in the next couple of days and then its all go.

The security up there looks fantastic as in it looks like a prison, I expected guard towers and snarling Rotties when I saw the size of the fence.

I didn't.

I'm an impatient sod and figured with security that good, they can't be too bad:hihi:

I used to live just down the road from there and the soil in the area looks similar to what I had in my garden. If it is then it's amazing and should be fantastic to work.

I'm waiting for my tenancy agreement now so I can go and get stuck in.

I've taken plot 24, if you fancy being neighbours?:hihi:

ah bugger, i was hoping maybe you could tell me which ones were the ones to pick! im definately gonna take one, the only thing stopping me was the chavtasticness of the surroundings! (iused to live round there to but it was like being back in rotherham, even the 10 year olds shouted freak!) but from the looks of it theres no way ill get any hassle on there, and i can now personally vouch for the security, but to be honest im not even sure anyone would knwo the allotments were there anyway!

aye neighbours sounds good, i just dont wanna end up chosing a plot and then getting up there and realising ive picked the one with all the brambles! just athought but if you get ur tenancy thru and they send you a key (they better do!) would i be able to come up with you one day and have a look around? if not maybe when you get up to 23 you could let me know whether 22 or 24 looks less overgrown! im really excited tho, was quite disapointed on sunday not to be able to have a proper look

Thanks for the encouragement.

We're going in on Saturday to get started. We have decided to pick berries untill we cant reach any more ripe ones and the cut it back untill we get to some more and so on.

I'm off to B&Q for some very sharp loppers and secateurs and big garden sacks and then we aim to have some fun.

I just hope the rain stays off us for a few days.

6 months ago the manor allotments were a load of rubbish, with the only decent ones plots 1-5 which all have their own individual partitions and doors/locks. The rest of the plots were overgrown with a lot of flytipping all over the place.

I went to see the site again last weekend and surprised at how much better it looks now. Loads of plots have been taken up, and I snapped up one of them :) I'll be seeing you lot soon I'm sure.

As far as I am aware its the only site in sheffield without a waiting list.

I think I am more or less opposite to yours, plot number 40 ... see you there soon. I have just checked with the Office and the contract has been sent out, so I should be out and about there in a weekend or so's time.

Sounds very much like our site (Hagg House) a couple of years again, then people started taking on one or two plots which got things moving and more people became interesed. Now it is full with a waiting list of over 50. They're not all being worked, but that's a different story...

The right location for the manor allotments. !
The allotments are surrounded by CITY RD - QUEENMARY RD & MANOR LANE.
This is before manor park estate was even thought about.

Signed and sent off my contract today so hope to get the keys soon.

It seems we have a fair few on the Manor now. Is there an official Manor allotments group/society of some sort, for example, one that can lobby the council for cleaning out the rubbish or stop tenants from neglecting their plots etc etc.

I don't know about a Manor Allotments society, but we are trying to get something done about it.
One of the Allotment holders is writing a letter for us all to sign so we can complain with one voice about the problem.

See you up there soon:)

The council (allotment office) will usually come back and say there's no money, etc. If you find out what area panel the allotments come under you might be able to get some money from them to help with a clear up (skips, etc). Definitely helps if you form an association/society though. We went through similar stuff with our site (Hagg House) a couple of years ago. PM if you want more details.

It would really help you if you set up an allotment society. They are springing up all over the place. If you have a society and pay a basic subscription then you will have a voice through Sheffield Allotment Federation. If the Federation know of specific problems on your site then they can raise them with Parks, Woodland and countryside (at a quarterly meeting called 'Allotment Advisory' that meets with various councillors, Chris Healey from Parks and Countryside, John Martin the Allotment Officer and is chaired by Cllr. Gillian Creasy). Parks and Countryside consult with Sheffield Allotment Federation so representation would certainly be wortH your while.

Good luck with it all. We set up (revitalised) a society at Heeley and District site a couple of years ago with no regrets.

Leave the knotweed for now. If you do cut it back, burn it straight away but don't try and dig it out yet, you'll just double the problem.
Glyphosphate will destroy it but only after many applications. The plots are pretty long, so you have plenty of growing space to be going on with, as long as you don't let it flower and seed you should be able to keep it under controll while you wait for it to die.
We wont be there much over the next week or so (breaking in a new kitten) so good luck and see you soon.:)

Knotweed doesn't seed, thank God, or the whole country would be over-run by now!

We've got some in our local wood, which I reported to the Council. I was told that they are not allowed to use chemicals - only organic stuff - so they're a bit stumped when it comes to knotweed!! They do seem to cut it down every now and then, but it is still gradually creeping along and getting more and more established.

I can understand the wish to stick to organic methods, but if there is no organic way to kill knotweed, it strikes me as just plain bloody stupid not to use the chemicals :loopy:

The problem with using chemicals on it is that the roots go so deep the ground and surrounding ground would be effectively poisoned for a good year, also if one gram of root remains healthy then it will be back anyway. It's evil.

I'm surprised that the council have let it grow on the site, knowing what it can do. Some of the other allotment holders have poisoned this particular patch already and, well it's back.

It's a slow process to hack it back and repeatedly poison it until it gives up, but it's a sure way to make sure nobody else has a ruined crop or invasion of the Triffids.

beckelina
09-10-2008, 09:32
With knotweed it helps to lay a carpet over it after you've hacked it back. This speeds up its growth as it looks for light, and then you can periodically lift up the carpet, hack it back again and burn the waste.
Might speed up the process a bit, and also helps to ensure that the contaminated soil isn't tracked around the site as easily.

Helloo! we're (me n Mojo1) are only 34 & 30 - so not much older than you.

Getting the plot cleared will probably be the only thing you can do this year, the plots left are badly overgrown but it's worth clearing them!

If you do get an allotment the Council will send you an allotment booklet with your tenancy agreement, it might be best to ring them as emails often get missed. (it's one man in the office).

We're hopefully going up there in the morning, weather permitting. But you can always PM me when you're going and see if we can meet up and you can see what we've done so far.

Mojo1 is more of the expert so she'll give you hints n tips!

See you soon!

Do any of you have plot 25? I have just taken on plot 26 :help:

I was wondering if any of you had any advice as where to start. I also have no idea what to do with the several large trees growing right in the middle!

We are going up tomoro and most of the weekend to start clearing, but I just wondered how some of you started or if anyone can recomend where I can hire a chainsaw.

Thanks for the offer  not sure where em and I are gonna start. I need to figure out what I can do about these trees, Im not even sure if I can chop them down ?????

If you are planning on getting a plot up there, the pots next to us and oposite are exactly the same. It looks like a few people have done a fair bit of clearing recently so Im hoping to get some tips.

Maybe clear around the base of the trees etc, then while thats happening....ie weeks / months lol.......you can get confirmation from the person in charge if you can.....at a guess i expect you can chop them down, or even move them.......

If you want any help, it will give me a good idea of what to expect by looking at the neighbours :)

John at the allotments office has said that they will be opening up he really overgrown plots at the bottom of the site, get onto him if you need a hand clearing trees and the like.

I'm trying to get a meeting sorted for our little community to start up an association and get us more protection from our resident fly tippers and thieves. If you are interested in joining then please PM me some contact details so we can get this going sooner rather than later.

mojo1
22-11-2008, 00:11
Come on people, let me know if you're interested in a meet up to sort out the allotment soc. So far only Jilly has got in touch. I need to know if it's worth it.

The society will be able to get funding for a lock up for all the members tools, plus extra for security measures, that's just for starters. Please PM me your contact details if you want to get involved.

I'll be the red head in black, smoking a fag and looking tired. The council have been in to tidy it up a bit, so it's not looking as daunting as it was. Still alot of hard work though. I'll PM you my mobile number, in case you can't make it or can't find me, although I can't see there being too many people loitering around the gates, lol.

Not cleared the plots, but the access down to them. You couldn't get near some of them earlier this week.

It's not great, but it's much better:)

Anyway, I'll get that PM sent.

Thanks! I don't think that's where mine is... I've no idea which set of allotments mine is then - it doesn't seem to fit with any of the other council owned ones in S2. Perhaps they're private allotments...

Hya peeps after aprolonged absence due to many MANY unforseen personal difficulties and injuries I was hoping to return to the allotment this week, however looking out of the window... I think I'm cursed!

Anyway, once this snow (may it be plentiful for the next few days and then bugger off) has cleared I will be throwing myself back into it.

So look forward to seeing you all very soon:D
