I have tonight spoken to Jackie at C.A.T.S sanctuary.

I am so upset to say - that of all the people who have offered to volunteer and help her raise funds or do anything - nobody has stuck with her and helped.

Does'n't anyone care whether these poor abandoned and abused cats that she is trying to care for ever get any more food of money for their vet fees and treatment? Jackie doesn't just look after these cats - she gets calls all day and all night long - with people desperate for help for cats around the city.

People phone her constantly because the RSPCA and others just pass her number on and she always tries to help. They have no money - no volunteers and nothing in the bank account. Tonight they have just £8.00 and over £500 worth of debt at the vets - who have told her they won't treat anymore cats for her until the bill is cleared.

Rain Rescue has already donated almost £800 towards vet fees and food for C.A.TS - hoping that some people would kick in and help them to survive.

The Sheffield RSPCA being closed has put a huge burden on these penniless rescues around the city - but still this cruel city of Sheffield will always have abandoned and desperate cats. This last week C.A.T.S. have taken in 2 cats that the owner was taking to be put to sleep - nothing wrong with them - she just couldn't keep them anymore and nobody else would. She help a litter of kittens that had been abandoned in a bag - and she has sat and nursed them and bought them kitten milk at over £8.00 a tin.
she has been out at all hours trying to trap a ferral mum - who has a litter on the local allotments.

I get so upset when there are charities around the country sat on thousands - and sometimes millions in the bank account - stashing it up for goodness knows what - when there are people like Jackie at C.A.T.S who would be able to do so much with so little.

The web site that was set up for her has gone stale and nobody is updating it - and so people never donate.

Please - if you love cats. Think of those that have had cigarettes stubbed out on their body and their ears. Those that have been used as pin cushions for druggies with needles, that have been kicked so hard - their bones have broken - because these are the ones that Jackie is begging for money to feed them and take them for basic vet treatment.

If you can give her any money at all - either paypal it to us and mark it for C.A.T.S. or paypal it via their web site as seen from our rain rescue site - and hope its not too late before they close and I don't know what will happen to those poor cats may all as there is nobody else to care for them.

If you love cats - please help our local sheffield rescue.

Is the sanctuary a registered charity? I have done a bit of fundraising and would like to find out a bit more about how I may be able to help. I work for an organisation that supports the voluntary sector and I have access to information about funds currently available. Which area is the sanctuary in?

Do you know what has happened with the table top sales that Jackie was going to do Rain? I was supposed to be helping with them but heard no more.

Is it possible for Jackie to get a poster put together, I could distribute this at work (NGH) loads of cat lovers there including the Boss lady. This might stir something up - just thoughts, and would be willing to help put a poster together.

Rainrescue

C.A.T.S is an old established registered charity from the Sheffield Firth Park area.

The few volunteers who go there - will count towards many areas of funding. I did approach Community Champions for them once as this is such a fantastic area of support for vulnerable people - I thought it would be perfect for them to help

However, the hoops and things that the sanctuary would have to do in order to get any funding was ridiculous. Yet again, those that know how to do it, or those that have the time to do it, will receive it.

Jackie does everything herself there, and doesn't have time to be doing funding applications and things - so anyone who could help - would be more than welcome.

Moonbird - I don't know what happened to the table top sales - I thought they were still going.

Helensq - thanks so much for the offer - but its cash that they need and cat food - that they don't have - all her money goes on vet bills, and now its coming upto winter - it will be the heating bills as well.

Any help for them would really be appreciated - if you could think if there is someone that could help and who loves cats - please ask for them.

Thanks Estweyn - re the poster - Jackie doesn't do computers - someone once donated one, but they never set it up for her, and she isn't technical or have the time - so
If you did have time to do something - that would be great.
I have made her one up before which is like a collage of the cats with Jackie in the middle - thanks for your offer of help.

Does she have any tins, a few of us could do some good old fashioned tin shaking in Sheffield maybe?

Perhaps she should consider taking her cats to the Sheffield Cat Shelter and being a volunteer there rather than put herself further into debt. They are, after all, concerned about cats too.

Thanks for picking up on the thread for her.
The previous thread was all about C.A.T.S - it basically seemed to die a death. I just don't have the time to keep raising awareness for them on here, and I thought some people would be picking up with her and helping. Lots of really kind people donated some money before - I think they got a few hundred pounds - but as we all know - that can be just a couple of vet bills and she's back to square one.

I don't think they do use their ebay Missionfish account - I could look into sorting that out if it means we can do something that way.

Helensq - definately re the tin shaking - that could bring in some money for them, but I think you have to have permission from the Sheffield Council to be able to do that - could anyone pick that up and lets have a go?

Max - what you say is possibly true and it certainly may come to that. I know that the Sheffield Cat Shelter do lots of good work - if jackie could at least forward all the calls for help onto SCS and so all she had to deal with were the ones in her care - that would halve the battle. The problem with the ones in the sanctuary is that many of them are semi or totally blind/deaf/disabled in many ways. She has 3 cerebral palsy youngsters that she has hand raised and that now wander around at the centre because they know where to go and the pace there is calm and suitable for kits with such a disorder.

She would be devastated if they had to be moved - and as so many are old - and if she didn't have to take any more in - then it could just gradually wind down if nobody else could / would run with it.

I would love her to just get her head above water - and then if people could help a little bit to keep her sustained.

thanks for helping

Thanks for everyone being involved here

I don't know about Tin Shaking - Charlie could you phone Jackie and see if they have any tins, and could someone co-ordinate and run with this one?

Adz on the forum is doing a tin shake organisation for RAIN RESCUE/?

Tin collections in the city are a fantastic way of raising funds - and between us we should be able to get enough people there on the day so its not too big a burden for just a few

Re Paypal donations - it isn't true that they don't deduct money - i am having to re-register the account and change it, and re-submit bank account information to change it so that they dont. they charged twice for a transfer before because they charge for money transferred into bank account under £50. and once the charges had come off, she had under 50quid and so got charged fees twice.

Also, there are 4 payments from Paypal that have now gone into a 'pending' state. Goodness knows why. So up to now there is £34.00 in the paypal account, and there should be another £35 to come in when these eventually get released. However, I can't transfer the paypal £34 - because we would get charged further because its under £50.00 (confused). I have written to the email guru at Paypal to try to get it sorted out.

but once i get that changed, she will be ok for the donations.

Thanks anyone - please keep helping them.

I can try and arrange thing for cats but i am sorry i have no time to actually do it, i would also happily help people to organise collections if they are just unsure how to do it.

Let me know if you are interested in collecting by either pm or on this thread and we can try and sort things out. I will however say Sheffield city collections will be difficult most weekends are booked up now into the newyear and for instance Asda at Handsworth has no free weekends until after Xmas.

Rain i take it they are a registered charity with a charity number?

I can't offer money as I have very little as it is but I am happy to donate some time and give some bits and bobs from home for a fete or table top sale or something to raise some money. I can also spread the work to friends for their work to hold a wax a thon or similar to raise money.

Rainrescue

That would be great Holistic. Time is often far more valuable than money.
Please give c.a.t.s. a call - their number is on our web site under CATS at sheffield.
Alittle bit of time, can generate money enough to feed and keep in vet treatment for a while,

Keep trying the phone at the sanctuary - there is literally just a sole person to answer, they will be appreciative of all and any help

They can accept money - its sat there waiting in the Paypal Account. We are desperate to get it out for them, but I can't get in touch with Tattybear to authorise the validation of the account.

Don't worry - anything that you pay into the Paypal account is safe. It will come through to C.A.T.S - so if anyone still sees Tattybear would they ask her to log back onto her email account.

Please donate - I have just put an appeal up for them cos half the cattery has now collapsed and its all under water.

What if people can't give money or time? Is there another way to help, items they could give, cat food for example? If people can donate some cat food then she can use the money usually spent on that for something else?

Rainrescue
06-09-2008, 12:54
Yep - Cat food - cleaning products - newspapers But they have to be decent quality cat food. The older cats, and like most of these - have sensitive stomachs just can't swallow cheap cat food - and they throw up.
I am trying to get one of the better cat food manufacturers to donate some good quality food - so maybe if they don't have time to offer - could do some begging of Cat food companies?

Re Tin Shaking - is anyone picking up on this one?

OMG!

No wonder I've been unable to get through to Jackie on the phone!

Unfortunately, since moving I have no Internet connection and am currently using my parents' whilst visiting them. Money's been a problem for me too and I've not had the petrol to get up there.

I also agreed to assist Jackie with table top sales and stuff, but didn't hear back from her. I'm horrified that the sanctuary has suffered so much since I've been unable to get in touch with her.

The key problem for Jackie isn't the donation of items to sell in order to raise funds, but bodies to actually do it.

Being disabled myself, I'm very limited as to what I can do and feel so frustrated as due to my illness am unable to work and have the time available. SO frustrating!

Rain - as soon as I can, I'll put as much fuel into my car as possible and get over there to see what I can do to help Jackie. I can't promise money at this time as I'm even having to skimp on food myself right now. I'll get her to dig out the computer and I'll have a go at setting it up for her as I used to be a software technician. I'm no expert, but I know the basics. I don't have a phone number for TattyBear, only EM unfortunately.

Oh, those poor kitties and Jackie......

I do remember Jackie telling me that after the earthquake we had, the ground water rose up through the floor and it all needed replacing (which had been done), but the sanctuary itself is wooden (walls and roof) so is susceptible to the weather more.

I don't know is the simple answer, but hope to see Jackie as soon as I can afford to.

Anyone who has been upto the C.AT.S. sanctuary will see that its really just a load of sheds bolted together in some shape or form. Grown over the years - very higgle de piggle de.

On the inside it looks like a proper place - on the outside - the house that jack built. (No disrespect jac)

The last 'extension' was an outside play area - and I think with all the rain thats just come - its literally parted that and some other seams - and its raining inside and flooded the outside pens.

No worries djelibeybi about not getting up - we know that people have very busy lives - and no matter how much people often want to help - family and home life have to come first - but maybe if there are people out there with time on their hands - who could help - at least to get things moving to bring some money or helping hands in for a while - they will do now that its so bad.

Why not look to see if you could write to some companies asking for money - or some funders or even pet food companies. You could do that from home without travelling up. Every little helps (so they say).

any chance we could set up a similar thread in the public forum area? not many ppl come to this end of the forum. i only did because facebook told me the sancuray as in trouble again. even if it gets taken off again like last time...at least might get some donations from the general public of sheffield!

i was talking to a forummember who was actively involved in the shelter about writing to the local schools to get them to fundraise. they said it would have to be approved by the commitee. i nevr heard anything back. i think getting schools involved could get a long term revenue stream for jackie

Yes - if you look at the footer with Fabulous_girl and also if you follow the link to the C.A.T.S. thread - you can see it is a registered charity. They have been one for years and Jackie Longley has been helping cats around Sheffield for over 25 years that I have known her.

This is a very genuine appeal for the people of Sheffield to help this little charity. Its not only about helping the cats there - many people used to visit the sanctuary for a little bit of peace and quiet and just to stroke the cats. They used to have many vulnerable people who turned up to volunteer and also - just sit and watch the cats. Sadly that can't happen any more, because access isn't safe enough and Jackie doesn't have the time to do all the work - and look after visitors as well.

Please let me know what you are going to organise - I have to plastic collection tins we could use - but no lables for C.A.T.S - maybe there are some up there, or someone could produce us some to use?

Rain

I spoke to the charity committee after the last big appeal regarding this and other suggestions, and they deal with all correspondence to major companies for support, donations and grant applications themselves. They maintain a record of all companies they've approached and whether they've been rejected or not. Without revealling anything confidential, I do know that most national companies will only support national charities rather than local ones, as the problem is when to say "no" to so many worthy causes.

FANTASTIC NEWS!!!!!! Pets @ Home (the pet shop) have just come up trumps.

We applied for a grant earlier in the year from Pets at Home for £3,000.

GUESS WHAT - they have just notified us that C.A.T.S. have got the money.
OMG - how good timing is that?

So, now we are working out how we can pay the debts off, pay the vet bill and the builder. Then start to use the money wisely for the future.

We STILL need all of you to continue to help and support them though.
This will mean that we can get some of the back bone work done - but by our continuing help and support, it should mean that this little charity will be great for the future.

Thanks to the people who have offered to help them - Rae is going to co-ordinate for cats so that we don't duplicate and people get their help taken up on

thank you everyone - think i have gone into ramble mode.

I spoke to Jackie at C.A.T.S. for 3 hours and 40 minutes last night, which helped her pick up her spirits a bit. Me and her can't 'alf get gabbing! :hihi:

The wheels are turning to help turn this dedicated and valuable charity's fortunes around, with many people (especially Rainrescue!!!!!) stepping to the fore and easing the pressure on Jackie and her committee.

Here's some information which Jackie has asked me to get out there in the public domain:

C.A.T.S. used to provide therapy sessions for disabled children. During the sessions, the children would be supervised whilst handling the cats, learning all about them, and receiving sensory experiences from the interaction. This resource has had to be removed as the charity is unable to purchase Insurance Liability, which is a Health & Safety requirement for the children's visits.

On 6th & 7th December 2008, C.A.T.S. should be holding a stall at the Kelham Island event. As such, the charity is requesting donations of unwanted gifts, the kind you'd give at Christmas or for birthdays. Jackie asks for no electrical items, books or clothes for this particular appeal.

With a view to the above appeal, Jackie asks if there's anyone with a spare room (local private home owners or businesses) who would be able to provide secure storage space for goods donated to the charity for resale. Usually the items would be stored in the section of the sanctuary which has been destroyed due to water damage.

A wonderfully generous gentleman has donated a gazebo to the charity to provide them with shelter when selling from their stall. This will hopefully prevent repeats of recent incidents where stock has been waterlogged and had to be disposed of once the stall has been rained on. So, keep an eye out for news of when and where the stall will be appearing!

If anyone is able to assist in anyway, please can you contact misschick.

Fabulous girl - would you send a pm through to MISSCHICK
what you are suggesting, what you can do and if you need any help?

Bless her she is trying to co-ordinate all that CATS want, and all people are offering and its no mean feat i can tell you
but if you summarise, what's on offer, then when she starts to merge them - she will be able to work it in.

sounds good

I've just been talking to a girl at work about it and she said she could help too. basically i think it would be a good idea to run a jumble sale to raise money. ive got loads of bits and pieces to sell, and im happy to donate the money-i'be just raided both my parents house and my boyfriends dads house for bits too. It would be good to hold it in a school hall or a church hall, probably one thats local to Jackie. I'll check out the other thread if theres a free venue on offer!

so its just a case of getting it all down to the venue then. I'm mega busy over the next couple of days, got back from a long weekend late last night and im already back at work, so i'll dedicate saturday to sorting it all out! i will be the organiser of this, so get in touch with me if you can help! ill find a suitable saturday and then hopefully we can raise loads of cash. maybe this can be an ongoing thing if it all goes well.

Jackie recently had a table top sale at Bellhouse WMC which didn't do too badly, I thought that these were going to be a regular thing but never heard any more about it, that might be worth exploring, I can help on those as they are close to home.
There is also St Christophers church hall on Bellhouse rd, not sure if you can hire that out but I have been to a jumble sale there once before...but I am not sure that there will be enough stuff to fill a church hall and it would be a big undertaking, though not impossible I guess....the worst problem is transporting things there.

Thanks guys. I am just trying to get a day ascertained and then any jumble will be welcome, just bring it on down. I am also thinking it may be beneficial to have more of a fete than a jumble sale, to attract more people. We could run a tombola, with cake and refreshments, and facepainters (as suggested by Beightonbabe)
