Does anyone know of any really good restaurants, cafes etc which do top class gluten free food? The only places i know are la tasca in meadowhall and a small coffee shop near the crucible, and obviously more choice would be fun!!

Thanks

I forget the name of the place, but there's a Latin American restaurant in the West One complex, the menu lists which dishes are gluten free. Also it might be a bit out of the way, but the Crown Inn at Higham in Derbyshire has gluten free options on the menu, including gluten free fish and chips.

Blue Moon Cafe to the left of the cathedral as you look at it. It is veggie/vegan and always has at least two GF dishes on.
Very wholesome food ... nothing really fancy but filling and deff homemade.

the blue moon cafe is the best, I know a friend has been to damonds at crystal peaks and she says its good for coeliacs. But otherwise it is a nightmare.

the Fat Cat do a GF option at lunch times.
http://www.thefatcat.co.uk/86index.htm

also it's possible to get GF at Indian restaurants if you pick carefully.
maybe the Cealiac soc provide an info leaflet on eating out?

We recently had lunch at The Cricket inn, Totley and there were wheat free choices ( e.g. risotto ) on the menu although they weren't marked up as such.

We do lots of gluten free dishes at Otto's on Sharrow Vale Road.
We make all our own sauces so can make you something specially
or most of our moroccan dishes are naturally gluten free.

The best places that I've found recently are Nonnas on Ecclesall Road (menu is on their website - google them) and Green Steps fish and chip shop on Hickmott road, just off Ecclesall Road. Nonnas isn't the cheapest of places, but it's very nice with a good range of gluten free choices, including a lovely flourless chocolate cake for pud. They say they can do gluten free pasta to go with any sauce that's marked gluten-free, but then non are! Perhaps this is just a mistake on the menu - we didn't ask, as there were lots of other things marked gf.

Green steps are completely gluten free (the fish anyway) and they're very nice. All the fish is from sustainable stocks too for added brownie points.

The Fat Cat claims to always have gluten-free choices, but looking at their current menu, it looks like it's a choice on one, with no choice at all for pudding!

Blue Moon Cafe
Bistro Pierre good for a chain restaurant.

Plenty of things are gluten free including up to three cakes at a time - orange polenta and almond, courgette and lime buns and most of the time a cheesecake too, chocolate or fruit.
Plus we have home made rye bread with our soups or with our many different freshly made salads an example of some:
golden globe beetroot with orange and a fresh basil and balsamic reduction
tabbouleh with fresh corn and herbs
black turtle beans with sauteed peppers, onion and garlic
japanese rice noodles with romanesco and an oriental dressing
roasted squash, fennel and parsnip in a herby dressing
cucumber, cherry toms, peppers, onion and our own marinated olives

We also have other stuff like home cured salmon, chorizo, hummus etc as well as our changing specials!

We went to The Angel in Holmefield last weekend for Sunday lunch, and it was fantastic! We went a few years ago and it was OK, but we were a bit disappointed. I had a brownie for dessert which looked suspiciously like something you could have bought for a quarter of the price in Sainsburys!

But now it's great! My son had gluten-free fish and chips (lovely batter) and my wife had a gluten free roast. Roasts can be easily gluten free, but having gluten free gravy and Yorkshire pud was a real treat. And the desert chosen was an apricot and almond tart, which was really nice. Lots of choice for all courses all well marked on the menu. Highly recommended.

The Bohemian on Chesterfield Road always have GF options, and the food is fantastic. Lots of interesting veggie & vegan choices as well. We also went to Loch Fyne on Glossop Road recently (only really any good if you like fish!) and there are plenty of GF dishes on the menu. The staff were quite knowledgeable about it as well, which always helps.
To be honest most restaurants will have something on the menu that can at least be adapted slightly to make it GF even if it isn't already, and if you phone in advance most places will be able to discuss your requirements and make sure there's something suitable that you'll like.

We have now started making our own gluten free savoury tarts, and I've been trying out gluten free fairy cakes, in chocolate, lemon, victoria and coffee. I've just made some gluten free scones/rock cakes this morning. Our soups are always gluten free and we have just invested in a fryer to use for Coeliacs. We are having bistro nights on the 7th July and 18th August which have a good selection of Gluten free options. The July menu is on our website under events at www.rhinegoldgardencentre.co.uk. Including fish and chips! We are getting some nice recipes from our customers so the daily specials and the menu are developing all the time.

Have u joined Coeliac UK? Its membership is around £20 per year but would recommend it to you as a good starting place for info. You get a guide to whats available on prescription and major supermarkets.

Sign up to Juvela, Dietary Specials (Nutrition Point), Glutafin, Genius etc websites/clubs as you get samples of their products and then u know what to order on prescription.

If you dont qualify for free prescriptions get a pre paid certificate which is around £110 per year but works out alot cheaper than paying monthly per item.

Well thanks for the TGI info I have never been in there.
I do go for live yogurt and have a favourite one Longley Farm. I have been trying out a Yogurt maker but only thin a failure really. I will have to try different recipes. I want to experiment with different baking recipes and flours. My first bread bake was no good, but I intend to keep on trying. I dont eat a great deal of manufactured stuff so its not a crisis to be diagnosed for me : more of a relief that I don't have to eat stuff that I don't really like any more. Because its actually killing me slowly I can decline it with good reason and not be thought bad mannered.

I promised to give feedback on The Evening Wedding Reception at The old Rectory. There were Plenty of staff on hand but unfortunately none around the buffet after it had been announced. My plates of Gfree had been placed at the end of the buffet table and my sister(the Bride's Mother)who had gone to check the spread had to stand guard as people were naturally helping themselves not realising that it was for a special purpose. When the staff came back they were very helpful and the chef had made sure that the potato wedges were not coated in a glutenous flour There was plenty of salad on my plate and the filling I had asked for. I don't think that I will bother buying Gfree bread,it really needs to be made into an open sandwich. I might try making my own again.

I am now the pancake queen of Greenhill with several recipes for Gfree pancakes to my credit and an expert with my granny's griddle. I want to try making dohsa, dhosa? now, after watching someone make them on Utube Grinding the lentils will be a pain though. This is a great chance to be adventuous though I wish it had come earlier in my life as there might not be quite so much damage done to my body. Oh and my sweet plate was refilled when I was ready for it. So no real harm done.

Fancying a cheeseburger me and my sister called at Uncle Sams on Ecclesall Rd. The staff are so understanding and really helpful, they knew what we were talking about and I couldn't praise them more! My sister has severe intolerance to gluten and faces a lot of indifference from restaurants so this was really refreshing. The burgers are 100% beef, the cheese sauce is gluten free, and they used a clean seperate fryer to do the chips in, the only thing she couldn't have was a bread bun! They couldn't have been more helpful. We were really happy with them. They also said if we called in advance they would be more prepared. Plus the food was delicious :)

Piccolo's on West Street always has gluten free pasta available whenever I've been. And then of course there's always Green Steps for Fish and Chips.

I'm generally disappointed with the gluten free options available in Sheffield compared to other big cities. I was in Manchester the other weekend and found a Pizza restaurant that makes its bases from scratch and do really good GF ones. Surely there must be some restauranteurs wanting to take money from us!

Otto's - went last week and it was fab and they are really good about gluten free and obviously understand this diet, which is always reassuring, also Papa Cicci whatever its called at Crosspool - very good and understand the diet. most Indian restuarants are very good and recently went to Ashoka - fab food there too.

we should keep this thread up to date! There are not many GF places listed in Coeliac UK unfortunately.

I've got an app called Coeliac Map, and it shows you where is good for gluten free. Problem is, there aren't so many places on the map. It's up to users to add reviews, and I've put a few up so far. If more people put reviews on, it will be more useful, and easier to find places than reading through this forum.

Here's the link: http://www.coeliacmap.com/

Currently, there's apps for Android and Windows phones, but anyone can use their website.

I need some help - I am having a 'do' and there are GLuten Intolerent people coming - are there any supermarkets that have party food that is gluten free?
I know the cold roast chicken drunsticks are ok, but I don't want to have to look through all the ingredients of ALL the packs in ALL the supermarkets.

Does anyone know what I can get?

Also, I've seen on gluten free sites that 'real cheese' is gluten free, is this just stock standard cheese, or is brie, camembert, smoked, blue et all ok?

Tinhob
09-08-2012, 10:09
Hi Scozzie

Party food is always tricky for gluten-free diets as it's normally got pastry or breadcrumbs on. I know of a good place to order online if you want things like small quiches etc (Lifestyle Healthcare - www.gfdiet.com) but I think you might need to order a min of 6 packs, and it'll take a few days to arrive. As for supermarkets, M&S seem to be good (eg small gf sausages). Most supermarkets have free-from sections, which might be a better place to look, rather than checking the ingredients in the normal places.

All cheese of all kinds should be gluten free, unless they've put a crumb or something around it. Most cold meats are gf but check ingredients. Crisps can be hit and miss. Lots that used to be OK now aren't (avoid Walkers, hola hoops, Pringles). More expensive brands seem to be best (Kettle Chips, Tyrrells etc but check packs for individual flavours - these brands are pretty good at labelling and say when they contain gluten).

Veg sticks are always good. Check ingredients of dips. Sandwiches can be made from gf bread (fresh generally nicer than long-life sealed packs). Just be careful what filling you put in and avoid contamination when making.

One important tip is to let your gf guests know what is gf otherwise they'll avoid lots of things that they could have.

Hope your do goes well...

Thurgo

Hi Scozzie

how lovely that you are making an effort to provide for your gluten free guests! I agree with what Tinhob says - M and S is your best bet but Sainsburys, Asda, Tesco, Co-op and Morrisons all have a Free From aisle - these are marked on the boards above the aisles so most things there are marked GF. You could set out a special tray or table and mark it gluten free if you have a few GF people coming - one of the concerns is will the food be contaminated with gluten if its on a table with everything else - but its easy just to make a tray up that is all GF. Sainsbury's and Tesco do some decent breads so you can make sandwiches - just make sure you keep them (including the butter!) away from the 'normal' stuff. I would be happy for someone to provide a decent plain salad - morrisons or M & S for example do one ready made in a bowl without any dressings and that will be fine, some ham (not breaded), cheese, sliced beef with some coleslaw and potato salad - most will be GF but check and a packet of breadcakes, a new pack of butter (so its not got crumbs in!). if you're doing jackets or chips they are fine - but dont cook anything with gluten in the same oil first! M & S do have a list of what's GF and if you ask an assistant there they will check for you Im sure.

some packet GF biscuits or buns will go down a treat.

hope that helps - its not really too bad to cater for us GFers and hope Ive given you some tips to help make it a good night. Im sure your friend/s will really appreciate your consideration.

or do a chilli and dont add flour and it should be fine with rice!

Gill
