View Full Version : Know anyone who's unhappy with abbeydale rd sth/abbey lane junction?
Apparently at least 36 people have signed a petition to the council complaining that the new junction at Abbeydale Road South and Abbey Lane is dangerous. I'm trying to get in touch with any of them - or anyone else with concerns about the junction. It's for a programme on Radio Sheffield.
Cheers!
WallBuilder 04-05-2005, 13:16 Since the refurbishment the junction is a lot safer for pedestrians. The old junction had such a long delay on the lights changing that cars were often seen barreling through red lights. I haven't been aware of any crashes at the new junction so why is it more dangerous? There were quite a few when it was in it's old style. I think they should look at the Bannerdale Road, Abbeydale road, Archer road junction next and try and stop the dim-witted drivers jumping the lights there as well.
eddies32 04-05-2005, 13:35 It's a lot safer than the old junction was and there are far more dangerous junctions about anyway. The one between Archer Rd and Hutcliffe Wood Rd for example.
that's interesting - thanks. i don't know that bit of town myself, so i appreciate people's help.
the objections raised by the people who petitioned the council were:
- it's dangerous for right turners, who have to turn after the lights change to red, or become 'trapped' in the middle of the junction
- there is frequent red light jumping by straight-ahead traffic
- the removal of the uncontrolled left turn 'filters' worsens congestion
- the bus lane should be reviewed
according to the council, in the first year of the new layout, there were three 'injury accidents', all involving people turning right - this compares to a prediction that there should be 'between one and two injury accidents every three years'.
what do you think?
Draggletail 04-05-2005, 14:03 All I can do is reiterate what is in the petition - turning right is a nightmare. You can get about two cars through on the green light
Nearly always two cars turn right on the red light, often three....
ok - if any of you are willing to express an opinion into a microphone, pm me!

Every single junction along that road into the city is the same for right turners as is the problem with red light jumpers.
I'm not sure that the uncontrolled left turn was better or not.
beansfeast 04-05-2005, 14:44 The junction needs a roundabout!
metalman 04-05-2005, 15:22 In my humble opinion it's better now than it was before. The rest of Abbey Lane's got worse mind, but just for a few yards there I think it is better.
Yes I noticed, although I go through that junction many times, I didn't have to turn right there until monday.. You have to go through red, there is no filter light! well not one i could see anyway.
The most risky juntion IMO is up by the bus terminas near Mynhurst school.. I used to call it the chequer board when i was a little girl.. still call it it now actually !
Captain_Scarlet 04-05-2005, 20:00 The new junction layout is terrible !
Lanes end, lights take ages...
It was almost bareable to drive through it B4, it certainly isn't now.
Abbeydale road needs 2 lanes THROUGH the junction, not just at it, and there's way enough room for 'em too.
I spose it's not as bad as 'em pedestrian crossing lights on woodseats that won't turn to the green man quicker than 2 minutes !
coolwill2k 09-05-2005, 09:38 Right,.... correct me if im wrong people but i think the right turners (turning right up to dore) have a delayed traffic light... so it turns red even tho the others are still on red.. this allows the right turners who are forward of the white line to get through... sort of like a timed bit where the oncoming traffic is not there as their lights are on red... this allows them to get through...
Does this make sense or is it a load of trollop ?
Ousetunes 09-05-2005, 12:11 Went through the junction yesterday, turning right in order to go do food at the Cross Scythes. It's a bit of a gamble isn't it? (Turning right, not doing food at the CS).
Still, it's good news for Sheffield City Council. The fact that there's a petition going up means their policies of irritating the motorist, causing confusion where it wasn't before, making you sit in your car for longer (that's a 'Green' policy, maybe?) are working and that you're just going to think: Right, from this day forward I shall rely instead on Sheffield's wonderfully efficient, cheap and reliable public transport and get rid of my car; this is music to the ears of our council.
The filter lanes were removed for this very reason. Same as why bus stops, which once had their own lay-by, are now kerbside (and if Fulwood Road is anything to go by, nearer the traffic lights in order to create a backlog). Ditto, 'pinch points', 'traffic calming measures' and whatever else they can dream up.

Filter arrows are needed. Coming down Abbey Lane I cannot turn right until the lights turn red and stop the traffic coming form the other direction. Even then a few cars try to squeeze through. There is an accident waiting to happen there. So far we've been lucky.
If you want action taken, forget a petition. Everyone who has a problem should write to the council individually.
With petitions, the only person who wil get a response is the person who sends it in. I'm not saying this is the case, but petitions are easy to manipulate, which is one of the reasons they are disregarded.
If they have to issue 40 responses instead of one, they might get their act together
:)

I believe this petition was recently presented at a full councill meeting. Contact Mr Mick Ogle at the Town Hall to see if he can
confirm petitioner's details for you.
benclements2 11-05-2005, 08:07 I think it's a lot better than before personally. It's only dangerous when idiot drivers (namely those in posh cars who think they are above the law) speed up when they see the lights changing. Then those turning either left or right have little or no time to complete their manouver. I seen many a close shave there as drivers develop colour blindness!!
Rant over!
