View Full Version : Cancelled BT, can't get Virgin and Sky isn't an option..
lyndsayx 31-08-2008, 10:46 I'm wanting to get a package deal of TV, Internet and phone but as all of the above are off the list and i don't have much knowledge of anything else i'm a bit stuck. Is there anything else out there, or should i get phone and net from somewhere and a freeview box? I really don't want anything to do with BT again as they were awful :help:
Without SKY or any BT phone line or cable connection you're stuck for now. However you may want to look into FreeSat which is the satellite version of freeview as all freesat boxes sport an ethernet connector port. Whilst freesat dont currently offer internet connectivity they will be doing so in the future with the first services to roll out including BBCiplayer and 4OD etc before later offering full internet connectivity. How this will work remains to be seen.
lyndsayx 01-09-2008, 11:56 Hi, thanks for the reply. How does freesat work, i was under the impression you needed a sky dish for this? The reason we can't get sky is the landlord won't allow it (listed building) so anything involving drilling is out. I'm thinking mobile broadband might be the way to go, but not sure what the quality of that is like :?
salmonbones 01-09-2008, 11:59 Yes, you need a dish for freesat I am afraid.

Quality-wise it, it depends on who you sign up with. What all mobile broadband packages have in common is the really low monthly usage allowances compared to "regular" broadband. If you are a really light internet user then this might be OK.
There's always TalkTalk (you pay line rental to them rather than BT, and broadband is free), they have gotten a bad rap in the past, but I've been satisfied so far.

Angilaruk 02-09-2008, 15:17 Try Tiscali, they do tv packages with broadband, landline, deals on calls etc.
Used them for over 4 years and not a bad word for them :)
I wouldn't touch Tiscali with a very long barge poll. :gag:
Rated 4th worse at DSLzone, and has been by far the most complained about ISP at ISPreview for 3 years running.
avoid, avoid, avoid. :!:
These guys make BT look outstanding...
Angilaruk 02-09-2008, 20:10 Funny that Aqreajag, but I know quite a few people who, like myself, have been with Tiscali for a number of years with no problem at all.
Do you think that people take the time to seek out sites to give glowing references? Naw, just like most review sites, it's all about negative.
Also, I know for a fact that when BT cold call about "changing back to them", as soon as you say Tiscali, they give up, they can't beat them :)
The fact that they lost 37,000 customers in the first half of this year and are on the brink of being bought out would make me think twice about Tiscali, no matter what the reviews say. :|
lyndsayx 03-09-2008, 12:49 I've heard a lot of bad reviews for a while now about them, after my BT experience i won't be signing up with them. I think i will sign up for mobile broadband, i don't do a lot of downloading so it should be ok :) Thanks for the respones

you need a cable feed for that...lol
Freesat is your best laternative, unless you have superb reception on your normal T'V' ariel as HD will be transmitted there soon, if you get a Reciever and Recorder you can of course save programs to watch later.
Personally i dont think i will ever pay the likes of sky again for content, i used to use Sky to watch the likes of stargate etc (of which i am a fan) but found that for 2 /1/2 months of subscriptions i could buy the complete box set and watch at my own leasure!!
You can have zillions of channels.. but yanno .. theres still nothing on...lol
