View Full Version : Microphone - How to connect and setup for PC voice chat?
ZEDEX48K 04-05-2005, 11:51 Hi,
May sound thick here but I am wanting to connect this microphone I have to my comp to enable me to use it in msn messenger v7. i have plugged the mic in the back ofthe pc in the mic slot!, and i have gone to speech tab in control panel (running xp) but i cant seem to get it to work!?
any help people?
cheers
zed
How do you tell?
ZEDEX48K 04-05-2005, 11:59 dont know u tell me!, has anyone used a mic in msn messenger?
Is it supposed to translate into text then?
ZEDEX48K 04-05-2005, 12:12 no i just want to use it as a normal mic! so the other person can here and also sppek to me. is broadband needed?
cgksheff 04-05-2005, 12:22 Instead of "Speech", open "Sounds & Audio Devices" in Control Panel.
Click on "Voice" Tab and then on "Test Hardware".
If it connected, you should see something there and you can be sure as to whether or not your microphone is working.
there should be a settup wizzard on msn, on MSN messenger go to tools--video/audio tuning and then just follow instructions :) then your ready to go
ZEDEX48K 04-05-2005, 13:46 cheers for info. can u use audio on dialup with decent quality?
cgksheff 04-05-2005, 15:02 I used to use audio on Yahoo with dial-up a couple of years ago.
It was OK. Broadband is better, but it was usable for talking round the world.
If you want voice convos over the Internet, Skype (http://www.skype.com) is LOADS better than MSN Messenger for that kind of thing... I use it loads to talk to my Brother in London.
And if you get SkypeOut, you can use it to talk to landline phone numbers via your Internet connection, all at local call rates.
HTH.

Why do you prefer it to messenger?, is it better quality sound r something?

Yeah, the quality is noticeably better with Skype than voice convos over MSN, and yeah both parties would need to download the Skype software and sign up for an account to use it (which is completely free unless you plan to take advantage of the SkypeOut feature).
My Skype name for example is richallen, if you want to download and install the software, and add me to the contact list, we can have a chat if you want, to show you how the software works ;)
ZEDEX48K 05-05-2005, 08:44 still my mate cant here anything?, I have done the tests in the wizzard and the mic works ok, any tips people for this problem on messenger?, before i try the new program rich reccomended.
HELP!
Captain_Scarlet 05-05-2005, 12:24 Skype currently is the best, I use it for phoning my parents back on the continent.
It's have 'aving two frenchmen next to me.
MSN is going to die, people are finally realising it's lame and it's always been.
Skype will take over :D
With this brilliant piece of software, you can speak (mic/headphones) (don't use your speakers or else: feedback), text chat, send files, and probably some less than necessary options.
Skype addies aren't @.com they're just your chosen nickname. You therefore do not need some usefless hotmail email AS WELL AS a passport account to use the bugger.

Funny thing is, when we talk to my Brother in London via Skype, Mum thinks the voice at the other end is coming out of the printer!

sent u a PM but ur mailbox is full!. Downloaded Skype but cant find ur username??
cgksheff 05-05-2005, 14:19 Open Skype.
Click on the 'Start' tab.
Look down on the left for 'Search for Skype Users"
Click it and a search box opens
Type in richallen
You will see his entry appear
Right click on it and choose to call or add to contacts
He has to be online and have Skype running to hear and answer your call though.
Once you have him added as a 'contact' and you are running Skype, you will be able to see whether or not he is online and able to recieve (like in MSN).
I have had audio and web cam conversations via MSN with no problems...sent files and played games etc
:P
this skype sounds too good to be true, spyware?
does it have webcam functions on it? not point talkin on it unless we can see each other too.

I can honestly say that Skype has NO spyware, nor does it install any spyware on your comp, only real downside is that MSN is perhaps better for you if you want webcam chats, as currently Skype lacks webcam chat features, it only works with voice chat.
But webcam chat is crap anyway unless you're on a decent broadband connection, not even worth attempting on dial up IMO cos of the amount of bandwidth used at both ends, and the fact that the picture at both ends would be crap.
Well i have broadband so webcam is very usefull to me  maybe they'll introduce its some day..
cgksheff 07-05-2005, 17:41 I've just been helping some relatives get Skype going over the last couple of days.
Very important to the whole game (this will apply to MSN or any other VOIP) is a decent quality microphone being used in the correct position.
We started off as though we were talking in an empty cell and through treacle. But when they changed microphone, we got back to an excellent telephone quality chat.
