Every time I go to switch my computer off, I get a message saying automatic updates are ready to be installed.

Every time I switch it on, I get the small yellow shield at the bottom right hand tool bar saying the same thing.

However, no matter which method I try, be it via turn off or via the yellow shield, my computer will not download the security update for the Microsoft XML core services 4.0 service pack.

It goes through the motions and says it has succesfully installed the service pack, but then it continually goes through the same procedure described above.

I've restarted the computer as advised after the alleged installation, but that makes no difference.

I am now one step away from using my lump hammer to install my own version of a service pack.
