View Full Version : Do you argue for no reason
On television today was the debate do people argue just for the sake of it.
Do you really enjoy a good argument, but at the end can you make up and let go or will you hold the argument over the person forever.
Do women enjoy arguing more than men and if this is the case why?
My whole family thrive on the concept that everything is black or white / right or wrong and will argue 'til the cows come home.
I try to let things go, and see the idea that a situation viewed from a different angle is like watching football replays. Did the ball cross the line? People can be 'mistaken', but we all have a different perspective on things.
I like a good debate/argument call it whatever, but my sons would like one word answers, they don`t do like to argue.
On the other hand my daughter loves to argue just like her mum.
The programme said we like to argue and its good for us.
if i have an argument with my fella, then the next morning ive forgotton all about it, ive said my peice and dont need to re-do the whole thing. im not one for holding grudges i cant see the point BUT hubby on the otherhand holds grudges for ever and carries on, mind you he usually twists things so much that then i get mad again and start another argument. funny thing is they are usually over the sillyest things. :suspect:

i used to argue just to prove my point but now i have realised its usually annoys the other person more if you say nothing so i walk away:D
I need a good argument at a certain time of the month. I am like a boiling kettle and until I have released all my tension by gobbing off at someone, usually my oldest daughter, only then can I calm down.
Fortunately she understands and lets me have a good rant. My bloke on the other hand can't understand the need for me to have a rant at all.
If I have a normal arguement I do dwell on it but my bloke can forget it instantly when it's his fault but if it's my fault he sulks.
Not sure if women enjoy arguing, in my case like a said I need to otherwise I would explode but that is a woman hormone thing.
I do like the making up bit

At least you're now rowing over the big stuff Litha! Surely that would be worse :)
LordChaverly 04-05-2005, 12:10 I think some people have a kind of free floating aggressiveness that has to find an outlet somewhere. Sometimes it finds an outlet on this forum.
I will not argue for no reason, or be aggressive.
AND IF ANYONE HAS A PROBLEM WITH THAT PM ME, O' REYT
:hihi:
I didn`t say I argue for no reason. Sometimes you discuss something and that becomes an argument because of the subject matter and feelings involved.
I have never become aggressive when discussing or having an argument with anyone.

we cant row over big stuff LOL cos Shanes eyes pop out when hes mad then i just burst out laughing :hihi:
I like to play devils advocate, just to get people to explain how they came to their conclusions.
No, I never argue for 'no reason'. I will argue about subjects which interest me, and I will defend my own viewpoints. That aside, I can see no useful purpose whatsoever in argument for argument sake. The forum is an enjoyable diversion for me, not a place where I seek to 'let off steam'.
The wise Lord Chaverley is correct here. There are certain posters on the forum who most certainly do have a ' free floating aggressiveness' about them. One, who shall remain nameless, courts notoriety with his robotic pedantry on many a thread. He is quite open about 'not looking for banter'. It is full-blooded, intense argument he is after. I am involved in rigorous academic debate every day of my working life, so 'banter' will do fine.
I did enjoy the politics forum though. It was possible to discuss political matters with people whose views were the antithesis of my own, such as the Greenbacks, Pinheads, Red Robbos and Disco Cats of the forum, and remain on friendly terms. These posters are not pedants, but decent, clever and interesting types. They argue for a reason, and accept that others [such as paleo-conservatives like myself and Jon Parr] can dissent from their opinions. Likewise, Nick 2's playing of 'Devil's Advocate' is a healthy tactic from a liberal-minded and fair poster.
Robotic arguing for the sake of arguing is the realm of the inadequates, boors and personality-disordered 'trolls' that occasionally darken our forum.
When i was with my ex, I am ashamed to say I sometimes would start an argument for no reason!! It really cleared the air.. I'm sure he used to do the same and once it was over we were great again for another year!! Of coarse I was a lot younger then and I have now learnt that to sit down and sort things out was a lot better solution then to start a big fight, just so i could mask what was making me unhappy, or likewise him unhappy!
I don't start arguments with people to wind them up or **** them off.. nor do I continue to answer back if I can see I'm wrong.
