View Full Version : Walkers, campers, outdoor enthusiasts
We curently have a Walkers Group that has been described as 'probably the most organised groups on the forum'.
We also have a number of people that go camping, but as there is no Camping Group, the post on the 'Going out' threads.
There has been much debate about this issue and also many requests for a Camping Group
BUT
The Walking Group often go camping on a weekend, but they also walk.
The Camping group mainly drink on a weekend, but sometimes they also go for a walk.
If there were to be seperate groups for each, would the walkers still post their meets under walking, or would they double up each meet and divide the correspondance between the walking and camping groups?
Or if the camping group decided they woulld also be walking, would they than also have to post in the walking section?
Would i no make sense to have them in the same section, and so people could all meet up on the weekends?
Those who wanted to camp, can camp, those who want to camp but also go for a walk can, and those who just want to come for the day and walk can do that.
And while we are at it - what about the people who like the great outdoors and enjoy other outdoor pursuits - climbing, mountain biking, skiing et al.
If there were to be on Outdoor Pursuits group, it would be very easy for people to find like minded people - I mean, isnt that what the forum is all about?
The one drawback to that is - will there be a large group of peole needed to be GL's orwould there be a lot of pressure put on a few?
Questions? Comments?
personally, I would like it all in 1.
What about those who just want ro drink?

already covered that
neoteric 30-08-2008, 09:16 Once we've all voted what difference will it make - will the powers that be take any notice?
Looking back at the history of this I doubt it - without wanting to seem too critical the Forum appears to be run on the lines of a benevolent despotism.
Oooops beats a hasty retreat in to less controversial matters, but whatever the outcome you can be sure that the Walking Group - sub section or whatever - will continue to flourish.
My votes cast!
holymoses 30-08-2008, 09:17 What about a Great Outdoors Section with sub sections of:
Similar to the classified section with the "for sale" "wanted" etc
Walking / Hiking / Hill Climb
Camping / Caravaning / Motorhomes
Cycling / Mountain Biking / Cycle Road Racing
Mountain Climbing / Wall Climbers / Absailers
Horse Riding
Orienteering / Map Reading / GEOcaching
Fell Running
Watersports and Lakeside activities
most of the above will over lap or double up like camping - walking or Lakeside, but to flick from one to another is no biggy.

Actually that's the best idea I've heard - I would vote for that - another poll please :hihi:

I think the answer is in the 2 posts above this one.
Thats exactly what I meant with having an outdoor pursuits group - it just never occurred to me to put it just like that.
holymoses 30-08-2008, 09:42 BTW. two excellent campsite I've been to recently Middlewood, Robinhoods bay and Derwentwater Camping And Caravanning Club Site.
While there we walked, hill climbed, mountain climbed, kayaked, rode horses, and did some drinking... lots of drinking fact.
An outdoors section would be very good, I would be certainly using and probably abusing it on a regular basis.
EdnaKrabappe 30-08-2008, 09:46 I think perhaps the walkers group are concerned that a camping group would dilute them, they are the strongest group on the forum and pretty established already. I also think there is room for a camping group... then you can just join in what you are interested in.
So i vote for two separate groups.
I vote two seperate groups because it's been made clear that the walking group do not want the camping group along side them.
I think an outdoor activities group would be a fantastic group as many people that do one outdoor activity tend to have an interest in other activities aswell.
Personally 90% of my camping weekends involve 2 days of walking whilst using the campsite as a base. At present my OH is camping for the weekend and cycling both days and I have other friends that camp and climb.
These activities are linked to each other and that should be recognized.
I think group should be for outdoor activities and maybe have walking and camping as sub groups, so the identities and boundaries are kept clear and nobodies toes are trampled on.

so the outdoor pursuits group - with a layout like the on holymoses suggested would be your choice?

Not sure about that Mojo - I think the view within the walking group has always been that it would be daft to mess with a group that is doing well rather than just create a new group for the campers. Why not merge the craft group and the knitters?
People are becoming frustrated because of the lack of any response from the powers that be on this issue and the creation of, lets be honest, a Badminton group, which could have been adequately covered in the "local sports" section.
I don't care anymore but I'm getting increasingly peeved at posts that seem to suggest the walking group are somehow "blocking" formation of a camping group. You've been told on numerous occasions who to badger on this issue - please badger them and leave the walkers out of it.

What Geoff decides to do with the knitting group is between him and them. Personally this is the first time I've "badgered" anybody about the camping group. I just put my suggetion in the right place when it came up.
I haven't bothered posting on the other thread because it was pointless as the group is being considered and it takes time.
Harrassing anyone about it wont make it happen any faster.
I can't remember posting anywhere that I thought the walking group was trying to block a camping group, but can you honestly say that it would welcome a merger of the two with open arms?
My suggestion was to fnd a way that suited everybody involved.
Well I've just voted for separate groups because when I go camping I don't even walk I just drink and shop!!
Home from Home!!

Are we married?
it has been debated for so long, I set this thread up to see if we can find a suitable solution to ofer the admins.
Also to see where the divides lie.
On all the other threads I've read on the topic, there are a lot of people talking at each other and not alot being concluded, except that the powers that be should be bombarded with requests.
if we can get an outcome that suits the majority, then maybe the admins will listen and offer us solutions.
As an active member of the walking group, who also regularly goes camping, I am obviously interested in a camping section, the same as most of the walkers in the walking group. But to benefit BOTH groups, most people I have spoken to feel it is not in the best interest of either group to just lump them together ad hoc, but this is VERY different to opposing a camping group altogether.
I personally, on the face of it, like the look of holymoses' outdoor section (especially the addition of another great love of mine - geocaching!) It would enable all groups to sit comfortoubly side by side without diluting them - grand idea!
BTW - when do you go camping - I'd be interested in joining you sometime
It doesn't matter how much people debate whether there are going to be seperate Groups or not, ultimately it will be what Geoff decides. This forum is not run democratically, so debate, arguing, polls, whatever will have no effect.
This includes sending pm's to mods and Admin. I rarely get a reply to any I send, so I've come to the conclusion they must not be read.
a number of people have PM'd me about this thread - and I assure you, the powers that be do pay attention.

we post in 'Going out in Sheffield'
this is the one for last weekend, just so you know what you're getting yourself into.

There is another planned in October in Youlgreav - Extreme Camping!!!
Its a small site with toilets and bars not far away. I don't think there is a thread for it yet.

Actually when the original suggestion was made we were informed on how to do this properly. After speaking to everybody involved I did what was specifically requested. I was then told what else I had to do then did that. Since then I was asked if I would be group leader and that the group was in the process of being set up but with the possibilty of being merged with the walkers group. I then just waited as asked and nothing appeared. I got pmd by various people asking about progress and was unable to give replies other then I had requested information and heard nothing.
Lindseyw 09-09-2008, 19:30 Just a quick note to let everyone know, this is in hand & we are working on it. As soon as there is an update I'll make it known.
Thanks

Agent Orange 31-10-2008, 14:46 Was going to ask what was occurring with this here camping thread type outdoors group. Whatever happens, I hope common sense prevails and we get a group in one capacity or another to cover camping. I mean, it's not like there isnt any interest and given that the last camping meet thread attracted over 200 posts in such a short time frame suggests that this group is very much worthy of consideration especially when you consider other groups that have been created and struggled to get anywhere near that amount of exposure.

Couldn't agree more. I wouldn't hold your breath though.

I agree.
I'd like to see both a walking group and a camping/caravanning group - but I'd prefer to see them kept separate.
The camp meets have constantly demonstrated that there's sufficiently enough interest to form a group that would stand on it's own - and in it's own right.
I wouldn't like to see walking and camping groups linked together for the same reason that I wouldn't like 'Foodies' and 'Allotment and Gardening' to be integrated. Just because there's a slight link, it doesn't mean there should be complete integration.
Groups Liaison, I believe, is Lindseyw. IIRC if you contact her with your proposal, and a few ideas as to how the group would be managed, and what would be included in it, then the rest is down to administration.
I have to say that the OP's original post makes about as much sense as my hair today. The software voting system will not recognise multiple votes - so instantly the 'thumbs up' vs 'thumbs down' results are factually incorrect.
Just an observation, Scozzie. :)

Allegedly.
I think Attention is putting SF on Pro-Forma for non-payment.....
Agent Orange 14-01-2009, 16:00 What the hell is going on with this? It has been ages since this was suggested and nothing but the usual "we are looking into it" feedback. Anyone out there prepared to tell me what is happening and whether we are getting a group?????
sTaGeWaLkEr 14-01-2009, 16:59 I'm working on it.

Crikey AO dont cut to the chase. :hihi:
Im with you though we were promised this was being looked into ages ago.
I've closed this as there is already a sticky to explain the procedure for registering interest in a new group being added.
In the meantime the long awaited update to the forum software is now on the horizon, watch this space for further information.
