View Full Version : Proof that you shouldn't worry about development set to a timetable
Birth-Peace 29-08-2008, 20:45 I was told that babies were supposed to start to smile between six and eight weeks.
Week six came, the bug didn't smile, as did weeks seven, eight, nine and ten. I was told that she might have autism as she wasn't developing properly and I shed many tears and worry over it.
It took me too long to realise that babies develop at their own time and I just wanted to give this advice to new Mommys. Please don't go through what I went through and relax.
From a Mummy that was so worried that her baby couldn't get eye contact or smile, here she is now (http://s136.photobucket.com/albums/q189/olliekitten/?action=view¤t=d2e4c012.pbr)
SpeedDemon 29-08-2008, 21:03 I'll second that! Kati has only really started smiling properly, for example when you talk to her, rather than just an odd smirk, in the last week or so. She is also now coo-ing and making noises when you give her attention. She was 12 weeks old yesterday.
Birth-Peace 29-08-2008, 21:05 The bug is 17 weeks on Tuesday :)
Did you like the video Speedy?
Ginger_Kitty 29-08-2008, 21:10 Its so hard to not compare your babies to the books/advice/other babies :(
But they all get to the same point eventually!
Some of Ed's friends at playgroup are ahead of him with so many things yet behind him on others. Ed smiled at 3-4 weeks, but didn't giggle til ages after some of his friends had.
Its the same with size, he's miles bigger than a lot of his friends who are older than him, yet just as healthy and happy as them all! Growth curves are also mainly poo ;)
When we look back when they are all older and at school and all level with each other we'll all wonder what we were worrying about!!! :hihi:
SpeedDemon 29-08-2008, 21:13 The video's lovely, she was so tiny when I saw her, she's really coming on now isn't she?
This is my little monkey, taken a coupla minutes ago...

Crawling!!! I'll be lucky. She is already standing with no support just a help with balance. She is going to be walking way before crawling lol
Ginger_Kitty 29-08-2008, 21:35 lol Yay!!
And less weight to carry round on those little legs!!
Exactly, the Bug is only 10lbs 6 and she is 16 weeks
:O my baby is heavier than yours and he is only 5 weeks!! he was 10lb 11oz 2 weeks ago... :hihi::hihi:
by the way that video is gorgeous, she is just lovely and what a cute smiile :D
I'm really glad to see you've had some relief Ollie, the flipping HV was really off her rocker for the things she told you, what a wally. Still, like twingle 1 she's there and she looks like she's developing fine.
Austistic traits normally don't show until after around 12 - 18 months, normally in boys and normally after one of the jab sets - hence the media circus, someone's not been kind to you!
Glad to see all is well and hope to see you both soon :)
weenireeni 29-08-2008, 22:53 just browsing the forum, and happened across this group for first time!

shells2909 31-08-2008, 22:00 Awwww Ollie, the Bug is absolutely gawgeous - her eyes are beautiful. It's so hard to compare our LO's with others i know. DH keeps saying ¨shouldnt he be doin this¨ or ¨When should he be doin that?¨ i just tell him Joe'll do it when he's ready and not before. That first smile is the best thing ever isnt it. Joe's almost 9 months now and laughs all the time, melts my heart everytime  xx
steelerbabe 01-09-2008, 14:24 Both babies are absolutely beautiful !
Babies develop at their own pace, Rachel has been smiling for ages now but has not started to laugh yet........ I am looking forward to the day she does though, she will be laughing everytime she sees her dad.
Oh yeah, just had her weighed today and at just over 6 months she is 15lb and 7oz.
