I've just been listening to Heart (digital radio station) playing their Top Ten from a Mystery Year - 1978. My question is, was this year the best ever for music? The songs played included You're The One That I Want and Night Fever, both from huge films of that year. Then there was Abba (Take A Chance On Me) when they were really the Big Thing; Genesis (Follow You, Follow Me) and many other great songs (no Smurfs though).

I rate 1978 as one of the best years ever for music, along with 1976, 1984 and probably 1979 and 1980. Obviously this shows what age I am (36 soon) and what type of music I like. Is it just a coincidence that songs from these years heap a loud of great memories on my shoulders?

So, what's YOUR favourite year for music - and WHY?

Oh, and The Coral. Point?

I must admit, me being the same age (cough), '78 - '80 was a brilliant time for music. Brings back alot of happy memories. Blondie, Boomtown Rats, Pink Floyd (The wall) to name but a few.

Yeah, 77 - 79 were defo the best years for music, certainly in terms of singles. I think more singles were sold in 78 than in any other year? If so, I'm not surprised - there were almost TOO many brilliant songs around - made choosing what to buy a nightmare on a very limited budget!

I have to say though, that 95 was a peak year as well - the summer of 95 was fantastic for music. The weather was glorious and Britpop ruled the airwaves.... Pulp at Glastonbury.... "Wake up Boo" playing on the car radio, filling the world with sunshine.... Marion poised on the brink of stardom.... then suddenly it was all gone....

Loads of great stuff around at the moment though

Without doubt 1966/67 were the most productive years for pop/rock music. The list is way too long to type here, but here's just a sample off the top of my head:

Beatles - Revolver and Sgt. Pepper
Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced & Axis Bold As Love
Cream - Fresh Cream & Disraeli Gears
Pink Floyd - Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
Bob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde
John Mayall & Eric Clapton - Bluesbreakers
Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac - 1st album

plus all those great psych albums coming out of America

Not to mention all those timeless singles by The Move, Small Faces, Donovan, The Kinks etc
