View Full Version : Crazy Lazy Half Sleeping
noseyrosie 03-05-2005, 23:27 You know when you wake up and your brain takes a few minutes to function?
The other day I was having a sofa-nap and my dad was telling me to wake up, and I literally shouted at him 'No, you're wrong I haven't Dad, she's in the other room - why are you having a go at me, I didn't do it! You'll have to go in the other room!' and i kept thinking 'why isn't he listening' and after 5 minutes I completely zoned out and forgot what I'd said, and my dad told me and I didn't believe him.
hehehe.....
Dozing is a pathway to what's called a hypnagogic state - a state of mind between sleeping and waking where things like lucid dreaming and occasional hallucinations can occur.
It's also been called 'a royal road to the unconcious mind', and is the state of mind that shamans go in to in order to commune with the spirit world.
Drugs? Just say no. Just go take a cat nap! :)

Squashie28 04-05-2005, 06:52 I did something like that when I lived at home.
My mum came into my bedroom to wake me up and said "Come on Jo wake up you have to wash your hair" and in some sleepy daze I said "I cant I havent got no hair".
Apparently I was dreaming about Duncan Goodhew and loads of other bald people for some reason.
Crazy.
I once said aloud 'Pakistani Guinea Pigs' :loopy: in my half sleep/wake state.
Don't have a clue why but I was picturing Guinea Pigs with Red Dots on the foreheads!
My bloke once said 'Right, I'll get it pierced then' :help:

The 'red dot' is a Hindu, or at least a predominantly Indian thing I think...sign of being married? Someone correct me if I be wrong.
cobaltblue 04-05-2005, 13:33 "Crazy Lazy Half Sleeping" I love that feeling :) Your in the half way zone, just nodding off. It makes me think that's how an out of body experience would feel. You can still hear the kids, tv, etc but your not fully there!!! Your in that floaty lovely faraway place :D totally relaxed and chilled .......... then you get dragged back with "MUM, MUM, are you sleeping MUM?!?!?!"
Joe is correct here re the state of hypnagogia. Some years ago, when I was a student in Nottingham, I was laid one afternoon in such a 'half-asleep' state, whilst the ambient music of Brian Eno played [on repeat] in the background. This must have gone on for around two hours, and it felt blissful. Every now and then dream voices would filter through, saying unintelligible things. A very pleasurable, extremely lazy and indulgent way to pass a summer afternoon, instead of revising for exams. That is, until, one loud non-hypnagogic voice shook me awake. 'You lazy bloody beggar!' exclaimed my then girlfriend. So much for my venture into another realm of consciousness.
It's like having a pre-med. That lovely warm, comfy, cosy feeling. It soon wears off when you wake up though :(
I love that stage just before you go "under" when the voices around you start to sound distant and you think "Oh no, I'm falling asleep", but you can't do anything about it, then you wake up with a big jump, bang your knee on the desk and everyone laughs at you.
Nick,
LOL. That has happened to me so many times. It is the worst on a train!

I once did this whilst listening to David Bowies 'Man who sold the world' - There is some very 'dark' music on that album.
I felt well freaked and spooked when I awoke :(
Wasn't aware of it myself - but once woke my whole family up by talking in my sleep...
...apparantly I was having a conversation with Mulder and Scully (X-Files) about my 2 sisters being aliens!! LOL!
They weren't impressed, but my dad didn't stop laughing for the rest of the holiday ;)

Oh god that's the worst! Falling asleep with the TV on and the plot gets incorporated into your dreams!

I find that quite pleasant if its a Brad Pitt movie :heyhey:
This happened to me last weekend...my boyf and I were watching 'Dodgeball' on the Sat afternoon and I just started to drift off...I could still hear the movie in the background but couldn't understand it. One part of me was struggling to keep my eyes open and like 'I wanna see the end of the movie!' and the other part was like 'watch it later, give in to sleep'
You can guess which side won :)
Timo, I too have had this happen on a train. I used to have a 1.5 hr commute to uni very early in the morning (well, 8am, but I was a student remember!!) and more than once nodded off with no power to stop it. Woke up with such a start one morning that I banged my head on the window...ouch!

Yeah, half your brain is saying "Sleep is good, lets go to sleep, close your eyes for just 5 minutes" while the other half is shouting "Wake up you idiot, your boss is just over there, NO! don't close your eyes".
