All ideas are welcome. jon jackthedog 04-05-2005, 07:17 Search this area as there's been a few threads of this nature. If I were you I'd head out Wharncliffe way and hitch up with any people you see in there. Most groups of riders welcome another couple of wheels on the route. You can finish the ride off with a swift pint in Grenoside or Oughtibridge too :) jonsastar 04-05-2005, 17:27 Thanks man, been up there before and thought it was excellent kinda fearing getting lost up there though as it is so huge. jackthedog 05-05-2005, 07:40 Wharncliffe is suprisingly easy to find your way around, believe it or not. If ever you get lost in there, just head downhill till you get to the railway track, then turn left along it and keep following it till you get to Oughtibridge village! The track runs all the way through, pretty much along the bottom. There only one bridge over it and a couple of tunnels under it, so you're unlikely to ever be lower down the hill than the railway. There is a good route set out in the woods that you can follow, marked out by posts with ring markers on them, or small signs with arrows on them. The black run is a good treck round the woods, and its fairly easy to follow the route. If you're out there on a Saturday you'll never travel far without seeing other riders, so ask them where the good trails are and they might show you some of the other cool stuff off the beaten track. jackthedog 05-05-2005, 07:50 There's a really great, non-technical descent that starts at the top corner of Wharncliffe Chase at the very top of the forest, goes over and then under two railways, and finishes off in Deepcar - brilliant for hardtail/short travel DHing! Its at the very far end of the woods - and its a bit quieter than the Oughtibridge end, so you come across fewer walkers/horses on the trails too, which is a bonus! Its about 3/4 minutes from beginning to end, with little pedalling, and it makes a change from the usual Wharncliffe super-rooty technical, rock-garden filled DH runs! I'm rabbiting on now, but I really love the place! I spent most of my teenage years riding bikes and building trails down through those woods :) willman 05-05-2005, 13:12 try www.freeride-uk.co.uk 'tis a sight for local mountain bikers. jonsastar 05-05-2005, 17:01 Thanks Jack I will have another try up there, see what I find, didn't realise there was some north shore style trails up there guess I didn' go deep enough off the beaten track, thanks for the advice. Willman your link doesn't work... found a bit of info about wharncliffe on a free ride site though, thanks.
