View Full Version : Lowedges- in the 50s and 60s
Anybody on here lived on the Lowedges in the 50s and 60s. I lived on Atlantic road and went to Lowedges primary school. Does anyone remember the launderette opening and getting free tokens for washing!
Would be interested to talk with old friends from that time:)
I have lived on Lowedges since 1956 went to Lowedges Infants and Junior Schools then on to Jordanthorpe as it was. Remember Miss Clark was head at juniors and Miss Vick at infants. My first teacher in thr infants was called Mrs. Read and Mrs. Duckenfield was always around when anyone was in need of her.
Oh you must be an oldie too, I remember Miss Vick, she had a poodle and was considered scandalous because she dressed very stylishly and was reputed to have had a face lift. I remember Miss Clark too. My infant teacher was Mrs Woodger, she was like a favourite granny, quite plump with a little bun. She was lovely. There was a teacher in the annexe that I hated though, cant remember her name but she had red hair, I think this was when I was in juniors. Then in the fourth year I had Miss Bedford who used to throw the blackboard rubber at bad boys and use the slipper on them... how times change.
I think I had Mrs Duckenfield, it rings a bell.
Do you remember the school hall with that pond type feature of the UK, that used to fascinate me.
Mrs. Duckenfield was the lady who organised milk and looked after you if you were ill and then had to walk you home. I do remember Mrs. Woodger and my sister was in Miss Bedfords class and likewise was fasinated by the pond outside the hall Also can recall Miss White she had a walking stick and Miss Daniels my favorite teacher was Mr Haigh he was my form teacher in the fourth year, that was in about 1964 I think
Mr Hague took 4a when I was at school, I was in 4b. Miss White I remember I think, was she the music teacher, I had aspirations to be in the chior. I remember Mrs Duckenfield now. I was born in 1954 so you may be a year older than me.
Other things that were really interesting to me were the 13 storey flats, we very naughtily used to go up the lifts to the top floor to look out of the window, no harm or malice intended, but my mother who missed nothing caught us at it one day and took me to the caretakers house where she threatened to call the police. I was cured of the urge to use the lifts...
I was also born in 1954 bet we were in same year
I bet we were, I was a little fat lass who dressed appaulingly....!!!!!!
I will pm you to see if we knew each other...

Hey I lived Atlantic Road too, behind the maisonettes. Bet you hung out on the swings sierraman.
Did any of you go collecting wood for bonfire night off the area at the top of the estate that later became the main road through from Meadowhead (behind the church)

Sure did estweyn, lived in the L-shaped block just opposite the swings where the swings and roundabout were! Can't remember collecting wood though. I went to the Youth Club at St Peters and later the new Youth Centre down by the park. PM me!
I was born in 1955 and we lived near the fire station on Lowedges Road. I went to Lowedges (Bradway County) school from the infants to 4th juniors. I was in Mrs Meggitts class in 1b but she went on mat leave and Mr Read (old pop mental) took over for the rest of the year. In yr 2 I was with Miss White, Yr 3 Mr Brown and 4b Miss Bedford. I was also in the recorder group that Miss White ran.
Does anyone remember Mr. Strutt who was the park keeper and locked the swings at night

Crikey, there's a name from the past ... pop mental ... I'd forgotten all about him! Do you remember Miss Vick, headmistress of the infants who used to smell of fags? I remember Mr Strutt the park keeper who used to lock the swings! Woodbine Annie who used to jog around the area with a fag in her mouth. Do any of you remember Basher, the nutcase who wanted to fight everyone?

I can remember people being re-housed from around Little London Place and going to live on the Low Edges around 1964? or 1969.
At that time they thought that the estate was a wonderful place to live and I would think it would have been hard to obtain a tenancy at that time.
I believe a great mistake was eventually made by stopping the collection of rents at the tenants doorways because this contact with the housing officer enabled the conveyance of problems direct to the local housing manager via the rent officer.
These days, The problems are filtered through someone who works in a area office. Often they are not concerned or particularly interested in matters that does not concern themselves.
I have complained about a wrong co loured tile that is fixed as a replacement, to the roof of lock up garages close to where I live. Nothing is done or will be done, because those receiving the complaint do not live near bye.
This is also one reason, why shortly, most people who work for Sheffield Homes Ltd. Will be made redundant when their jobs are transfered to someone who is concerned.
mondeo blade 15-09-2009, 17:21 I lived on lowedges road across from junior school .god i hated that dog at jackson supermarket.i remember them building the micheal church who remebers going to the brownies there and later the discos.

You were either in the year below me at school or the same year, I was in 4b with Miss Bedford. I remember Pop mental now. Funny how you forget some things. I remember doing art with Miss Bedford, we had to measure out on our page and join up the lines and eventually got a thunderbird picture. We also made rag dolls in her class.
I was born in 1957 and went to Bradway then Jordanthorpe. My first teacher was Miss Hopkinson (the red headed one?) then Miss Reid and Mr Brown. We had an art teacher for a time called Miss Jagger (did nobody marry?) and she had a thing with Brown, well that was the rumour.
I captained the rounders and football teams and we had alot of fun playing other schools. I remember playing rounders once against Woodseats at their school and we had to put a fielder down the cellar steps who couldnt see a thing!!!
We played Harold Jackson school at rounders in their first ever game against another school and the sports teacher, a Mr Hughes told us to declare because our batting score was too much!!! That was the summer of 68.
Great days
I was born in 56 and If I can remember correctly

Yes Irene had a sister called Susan, and a brother called Danny, Joyce was their Mum though, not sister? unless there were two Peat families.
Rita Cheetham was a bit older than me and lived in the houses that were behind the swings, I think theirs was the first or second house. Anyone remember StevenTurton, Jimmy Bullard.
Yes I rember Valerie but I don't think we were ever in the same class so I didn't know her very well. You must have been in my class in 4b Miss Bedford. I sat next to Elaine Latham for the whole of that year
Cant remember Elaine Latham, I sat next to John Farmer. I was in 4b with Miss Bedford, do you remember her throwing the blackboard rubber at Steven Stringer, I think he got black paint on her cream skirt. I liked her though, think she took pity on me cos I went up from 3c to 4b and had lost my dad the previous year. I remember John Farmer was good at maths and used to help me out, but I was better at English than him. However he beat me hands down at the paintings we used to do of Thunderbirds, think I have still got one of those.

I think this is the family who lived just to the left of the shops. Sue and I went out together in about 1968/9. A very very attractive girl. Dumped me and got married. She trained to be a Radiographer. Divorced and re-married now lives in Canada. Met up with Sue, her husband and Irene, who still lives in Sheffield, about 4 years ago. All lovely people.

I still bump into Irene occaisionally. Usually in Morrisons.
I worked with Steve Stringer for a few years at Sheffield College.
It was strange seeing him after all these years. His parents had Gill and Stringers shop on the shops near the grennel mower.

Don't know when that will be but I will try to remember. Little grey cells don't work as well as they used too :loopy:
Guess you must be off Lowedges too??
Hi again Camelot. Know the feeling about the grey cells. Talking about when I was 19 just coming up to 62. Used to live just up the road in Bradway. Had lots of friends in Lowedges, Greenhill (and Totley) but can’t remember the names. Brother & sister think she was Eleanor. Went to Abbeydale. He had odd nickname went to High Stores. Anther lived just across the road from Bradway School. Jim Jackson, dad had the supermarket was my ‘best man’. All used to walk to Norton Dance. Uncle who lived on Lupton Road. Met Sue through a girl at work when I was a Trainee Manager for BHS
I had aspirations to be in the chior. I remember Mrs Duckenfield now. I was born in 1954 so you may be a year older than me. ..

Wow that's a load of info. Ok just to decipher it. You didn't mention which school you went to. I'm assuming that your friends went to Abbeydale (him) and High Storrs (her) as they were boy and girls schools in that order at that time. Not sure which one you went to though. I am 55 and lived on Lowedges near the fire station. It is very possible that I know some of the people you know as I have a brother who has just turned 63 but he went to Jordanthorpe and I knew a lot around his age range because he had to babysit me.

It's like stepping back in time. I remember a lot of these names. I was born in 1952 and lived opposite the health centre on gervase drive. My mum was cleaner at the health centre when I was young and then progressed to receptionist. I remember she worked with Mrs Burns (who had 2 boys Peter and Patrick). I remember the first doctors there were Dr. Crawford and Dr. Atkin. Before the Health centre was built the doctors were housed in the flats opposite where the Health centre now stands. I remember before the shops were completed there were some pre-fab type buildings. Does anyone remember Ditchfields the newsagents and Stringfellows the drapers. My best friend was Elizabeth Neil. I also remember Rosilyn Moore, the Douglas's, Joy Robinson, Pauline Middleton, Anne Booker, the Boons. Steven, Michael and Katherine Pegg. I remember being really good at skating and bombing down Lupton Road at top speed. When I started school I was in Mrs Hinchcliffe's (I think) class, then a really nice older lady with grey hair (can't remember her name). In juniors I remember Mrs Meggitt and was really sad when she left to have a baby. I remember the bottom field before it was a park and going for a nature walk with the teacher. I also remember when the bottom field/park flooded and the cows came over into the park. My sister was born 5 years before me and my brother 5 years after so have got many memories of times on Lowedges - when it didn't have a bad reputation.
Hi Rozie
Your mum wouldn't be Edna would it? If so I have worked with her. I remember Dr Crawford, he looked after me when I had the measles. Can't remember Dr Atkin though.
I also remember Ditchfields and Stringfellows. Don't know many of the names you've mentioned but they would have been older than me. I do know some of the Douglas girls though and their mum Minnie (if that's the family you mean).
Hi Camelot
Yes that was my mum. She died last December. I am sure I will know you. I knew most of the people she worked with over the years. I remember Minnie Douglas very well.

Thinking a bit more about the stuff mentioned, I remember my Mum mentioning Mrs Neils in conversation often, but can't remember the family myself, and I remember Robert Douglas (great singing voice)
Hi mondeoblade, I used to know quite a few people who lived just opposite the school - Gillian Mills, the Jowitts, the Crookes just to mention a few. Mrs Neil still lives in the same house next to the Health Centre. Does anyone remember Susan Ogden who lived on Lowedges Cres I think, Christine Jepson lived on there as well. Do you remember the "Little Man" who sold sweets from a pale blue invalid car. He later bought the shop on t'end of Lowedges rd.

Hi Rozie. So sorry to hear about your mum, I remember her well. I worked with her and Madge from 1982 - 1988 when Sue Roberts was the cleaner, she also worked in GT news but I hear she's passed on too.
Hi mondeo blade I rember Mick and Phil Miller. Phil was in my year. I think they lived on Atlantic somewhere. Bet you remember the Percivals too, Jimmy was also in my year.
Hi Phailig, I rember Malc Austin, his nick name was talc? Wasn't there a brother called Chris, I'm sure he was in my year. I also remember Billy Ash, knew his mum Ann and his dad Ray they drank in the Magpie.

Would that have been blind Bob?
andrejuan 02-09-2011, 22:00 Would that have been blind Bob?
No not blind Bob, I met Rob on the playground of the lower school some years ago as we were crossing the field, me and a mate recognised him and had a good old chat.
mrs Jowett helped with my sisters wedding at the comunity hall along with deaf Doris, oh how the memories are flooding back.
Hi Camelot, Blind Bob was Robert Douglas' dad. You must also remember Nurse "Jenks" too. In fact I'm sure there must be a few more people who remember her - she was the district nurse who, in her younger day, could be seen riding round the estate on her bike in her navy blue mac. She later worked at the health centre. Madge Burley now lives in Norfolk.
Does anyone remember the library being on the shops (before Greenhill Library was built)? Hills the fruit shop was next to it I think.

My x used to live on Lowedges Drive, Roger and Alan Westney if that rings any bells.

My mother used to work at Wigfalls with Tony's mother Irene! I believe Tony had a sister called Pat? I went to the Bradway County school oppposite where you (mondeo blade) lived and then on to Jordanthorpe, firstly at the annexe in the village and later to the main school. Anyone remember the youth club run by a guy called John Fair?
I worked with Margaret Miller at the NGH, she has retired now. I know she kept in touch with the family, I dont think Philip Miller is with us anymore.
I remember the name Tony Sheldon but cant put a face to it. Does anyone remember the old man with the white dog that looked like a lamb, he had half his face missing and wore a plastic flesh coloured mask, always out and about walking the dog, especially near the shops near the Magpie.
Cant remember the name of the factory but I remember women getting on the bus at the terminus wearing white overalls and white headscarfs so it must have been a bakery, anyone else remember that?
More than likely Gunstones workers
I remember the old guy with the mask, always thought he lived in one of the old folks homes near the school. Anyone remember Basher?

The school infants/junior school on Lowedges Road was originally called Bradway County School, I've still got my school reports from a school of that name from the late 50's, when it orginally opened. The Lowedges Road name came in much later!
Hi Camelot, Remember me 'The Guy who lives in Essex' to Irene when you see her in Morrisons.
Hi inessex. Can't believe I bumped into Irene yesterday, haven't seen her for about a year. I mentioned you to her and she remembered you. Said to say hello
Hi Rozie, I remember Blind Bob and that he was Minnie's first husband. I also remember nurse Jenks very well. She was an inspiration, wouldn't like to guess how old she was when she finally retired. I'd heard Madge had moved to Norfolk, I think her youngest daughter moved down there first. I was in the same class as Lynne Burley. I also have fond memories of your mum.

You probably know me, I was in the same year as Tony too, my mother worked with Irene his mother, at Wigfalls on Rutland Road in the 60's/70's. I went from Bradway County to Jordanthorpe Annexe in the village and then on to the main school at Meadowhead. I lived in the maisonettes at the back of the shops/terminus. Not been back there for a few years!

Just Hello. Oh well I obviously didn't make much impact there;)

She was actually quite impressed that you remembered her and the family and she did especially ask me to let you know that I'd seen her. Let me know if you have any further messages, apparantly her daughter has moved in round the corner from me so I'm bound to see her again at some point. ;)

I'd be surprised if I don't know you. We moved onto Lowedges in 1957 too. Give me a clue and I'll try and guess who you are.

I'll PM you
I think you might mean Kathleen Inkles and her sister Carole. Can't remember Rita Cheetham.
Rita Cheetham had a brother Keith, they lived in the terrace of three houses around the back from us! Next door to them the Loxleys with their son Rob and next door to them the Haley's. I remember the Inkles, didn't they live up near the fire station?
